As Jon says, my stories become far more uninteresting when it comes to the "newer" systems. I either missed out on some or bought them during college or later. I missed out entirely on the GBA, though I don't really know why I missed the boat there. I think at that time I became a Sony boy, only because of Final Fantasy and fighting games, but I still had an N64 and SNES that I played regularly, so I never forgot my roots! I did have friends and girls that I dated that did have GBAs, and sometimes while we were at the mall waiting for a movie, they'd break theirs out and do some trading in Pokemon or play something in Animal Crossing I didn't really get into the GBA until I got into emulation for it and scoured through forums for different rom links that were usually fake or behind paywalls. Kids have it so easy now. My DS story is kind of interesting though. I remember I was about to end my first semester or third (it was a fall semester), and I had a similar moment to Alex where I just wanted a Nintendo system, so I told my mom I'd love a Gameboy Color for Christmas (I still hadn't managed to snag a part job yet), and she answered back with "why get the old thing? I'll get you the new system!" so I didn't want to disagree, and ended up getting a black DS Lite with New Super Mario Bros., but also Castlevania Portrait of Ruin!! I could NOT put down PoR if I tried, and must have drained the battery on my DS at least 3 times while I was still at home for Christmas break. The last system I ever received as a gift before I had actual big people money (or traded in a lot of shit to Gamestop) was the Gamecube, and I made out like a bandit with that one. It was in the waning years of the system, so there were already a bunch of bundles and price cuts (remember those? ) by the Christmas I got it. My mother asked me for a Chrsitmas list and I thought "well, it's time to get a Gamecube I guess", so that Christmas I got a Platinum Gamecube bundle with Mario Kart Double Dash for $100 USD along with Wind Waker for another $20 and a Platinum Wavebird controller. Total cost for al that awesome stuff was sub $200, even including that I grabbed Metroid Prime 2 at full price at the time. None of those games were quite as magical as Portrait of Ruin for me, but I had a great time with friends with Double Dash. The following summer, they'd come over every night until 4 AM and we'd play hours and hours of Mario Kart, and when Strikers came out, hoo boy. After that, every system was a matter of "Tony goes to store. Tony picks up game console. Tony buys and plays with game console. It's a good time." I have a lot of life memories attached to the various 3DS systems I owned culminating with the New 3DS XL sitting on a shelf behind me, but now I'm rockin' the Switch/PC combo. P.S. Zion's grandparents sound amazing.

I remember pre-ordering a 3DS from the local GameStop. Went on launch day, got it, brought it home, turned it on and saw the SFIV logo on the screen. I was like "huh? Is it an ad for the store? Is it a demo? What is this?" I flip the 3DS over and see there was a SFIV cartridge in it. Well the night before the GameStop had a like hands on preview sort of event and apparently used mine as part of the event. So I was charged full price for a technically used system, I was pretty mad and thought "well F you, I'm keeping this." Later I would find out, by my friend that worked there at the time, that the manager was pretty pissed that they could not find this copy of SFIV.

FYI - the Naboo fighter was in the original Rogue Squadron game on N64 and PC; I know because I got it there. The Hoth cables were tough in the PC original title too. Never played Rogue Leader, though. GBA: Golden Sun, full stop. I still had the Fantasy JRPG itch from Dragon Warrior Monsters and Zelda Oracles, and Golden Sun caught my eye immediately. It’s been a 20 year love affair ever since. I’m a member of the Temple of Kraden! Absolute favourite video game of all time. I remember that I bulldozed through the game and was only Level 25 during the final boss fight (got Isaac to 26 after the first phase and learned Potent Cure) and couldn’t win! I had only gotten Isaac’s Level 13 Ragnarok just in time for Colosso, after all. So I restarted the game and this time took my time and discovered all the secrets and this time won. GBA was the system I used the most - Pokémon, Zelda, Golden Sun games, but also Final Fantasy rereleases, Super Mario Advances, and the two Metroid titles. NGC: I don’t remember the exact first game, but I remember we got deep into Smash on N64, and that we got a NGC mainly to get Melee. We def played a lot of Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Power Tennis, Double Dash, Animal Crossing, and of course Wind Waker, Prime, and Colosseum. This was another major console for me and my family. We played like everything worth getting on the console. By the way, I learned of Fire Emblem through Melee, and later got Sacred Stones on GBA, and now have played and loved every single entry! NDS: I got Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt as a pack-in game. The first “real” DS game I played was Mario 64 DS. This console was mainly for Zelda and Pokémon, but also Chrono Trigger and FF & Dragon Quest remakes and of course Dark Dawn. I also remember a lot of playing Brain Age, and I TOO scratched my touch screen with the stylus - mainly from Final Fantasy IV DS and Mario 64 DS mini games requiring a lot of scratch lines, but later also with the two Zelda titles’ heavy usage of the screen… Wii: I skipped out on Twilight Princess here because I got a Wii REALLY late as I was happy with the GameCube and had Twilight Princess on there (I was indignant that they flipped the map and broke the canon for the Wii version and also made link not left-handed - I am a lefty). We got a Wii in 2011, the family edition that lacks GameCube disk and controller compatibility, SPECIFICALLY to play Skyward Sword. Though the console also came with New Super Mario Bros. Wii as a pack-in. I think I tried it like once, though. Later in 2012 I’d get Metroid Prime Trilogy, Xenoblade Chronicles, and download some games off the virtual console like Shining in the Darkness, FF IV: The After Years and Punch-Out!! (Wii). 3DS: I got this RIGHT after the price drop so missed out on the ambassador games. I did get Ocarina of Time 3D alongside and later on it became my most-beloved system. But it was definitely a slow start. I remember my first app used was the 3D Camera at an event at a local park. Wii U: this was the first console I bought with money from a paycheck I earned my own from work after college. First title was Nintendoland, though I mostly used it to play Wii titles like Xenoblade Chronicles until Wind Waker HD came out. It was my primary Netflix player, too. This is another console I went all in on and bought and played most major titles released for it. A friend got the white one a year later or two with Mario 3D World.

first videogame system: Gameboy Pocket at some point in the 90s. I don't really have many memories of it until I got Pokemon Red. From then on I have lots of memories with it. first home console: got a gamecube for xmas 2001 Also of note: As someone who lost interest in Nintendo at some point during the Wii/DS era and who was roped back in by the Switch, I didn't purchase a WiiU until ~6 months after I got a switch. (Switch: late 2018, WiU first half of 2019) While some may question that, it was cheap and I've saved a lot of money buying wiiU versions of games like Tropical Freeze and 3D world for $10 rather than full price versions on switch, more than enough to make up for the price I paid for the console, and what a lovely little system the WiiU is.

I always enjoy these long videos of you guys chatting about games. Keep this stuff up :) To Jon. The Rayman renders are very similar but aren't exactly the same. His mouth is open a little more in one than the other and his right hand is in a fist while the other isn't. To Alex. They're ATATs. I've just watched the old star wars movies recently. An outside couch with a beer can on the ground... always classy Alex. Lol To Zion. I have a similar story about selling my gameboy and games to upgrade as well and I absolutely regret it. It was when the gameboy color had been out for a little while and games were mostly being sold as gameboy color games. I still had my DMG-01 and a good handful of games like pokemon blue, links awakening, super mario land 1 and 2 and I went to a game store as a kid and asked what I would need to trade to get a GBC. He said all of it, and so I stupidly yet happily did... I ended up pulling a link cable out of my pocket after the deal was made and the guy said "oh and that" and snatched it from my hand. My dad had none of it and snatched it from his hand and said that wasn't part of the deal... at the end of it I walked away with a "new" used game oy color and 1 game I left at home. The kicker... the only gameboy color he had at the time was that redish pink one. I guess we both sacrificed our old systems and our preferred color for new hardware. You're not the only one who's forgot the wii u. Lol

More stories? Love this. Every game has a fascinating tale behind it. GBA had a fantastic library. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and Metroid Fusion were my first pickups for the GBA. I did several summer jobs, to save up for them. A worthwhile purchase. Bummer about the handheld darkness, having to find a source of light. I did not find an SP. But I did find a GB Player. Fusion was incredible, from start to finish, SA-X is another story. New suit, new adventure, unknown creatures, chilling atmosphere, and an awesome soundtrack. Unlocking the original Metroid was sweet. But dang it was fun to play a new Metroid game, plus the connectivity with Prime. Castlevania: CotM was a surprise. Difficult, challenging, but the art style, animation, and music were fantastic. I actually liked the card based attributes, and skill system. Next to Fusion, I obtained Prime for the GameCube. Tough to choose which to play first. So I alternated playing Fusion, then Prime. Even though Fusion, being a handheld title, was not very long, but it was intense. Prime was surreal, with its visuals, soundtrack, controls, atmosphere, and world building. Plus being behind the visor was insane. It was beautiful, and I managed to scan everything (also had the guide) since it also contained the map for the original Metroid. Also the Fusion suit was playable in Prime. To see it featured in 3D was marvelous. Absolutely loved it DS. With it being tough to find new, I found a used one. But it had a crack on one of it's hinges. I was able to fix it with gorilla glue. Cleaned up the screens. Plus the d pad, and buttons. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow It was a tough one to find. But a neat entry. Took some getting used to with the stylus. I wasn't too crazy over the new art style, it did display emotions it just felt weird. Loved the story. Plus the soul steal had even more variety. A vast map to complete, but the music, and level design was fantastic. Wii: I found a used one, but it was missing the faceplate. Since it was used, it wasn't taken care of. I took it apart, and cleaned it. Also turns out the disc tray was stuck, a copy of Mario Party was the culprit. Took the disc tray apart to free the poor thing. Was able to save it, but it had a few scratches. I did find a few games, but at the time, it was right before the servers for the Wii were going offline. I made sure to save data on a memory card for the next user to use. I wasn't too crazy over the Wiimote, but it had neat ideas with games. Switch: I was able to find an Animal Crossing model. Love the design. (But I have not played Animal Crossing since the GameCube) Thanks to a recommendation from someone special, I found a copy of LoZ BotW. That was my first Switch game. Still ongoing thru the game, but I absolutely love it. Tricky to adjust with breakable weapons. But so much to see, and explore. Lush visuals, atmosphere, vast over world, excellent controls. It is an incredible game.

Never owned a GC, Wii or Wii U. I played some GC because relatives and close friends had it, some Smash and Mario Kart, Strikers, some other games, but overall my memories of the GC aren't that expansive and fond. My first Wii game played was Wii Sports. My cousins had it (we had PS3, my other cousins had 360, and these guys had the Wii, we liked to say we all own the trilogy lol), but I remember going to their house and just playing it for hours. Loads of fun. Mario Kart, and Smash were also some games we played a lot, along with Mario Slugger, and some others. I do not have a lot of Wii U memories. No one in my family owned this one and my experience with it is limited to one friend had it so I played it a handful of times at his house. Only Mario Kart and Smash (and i'm not even sure it was the Wii U version) Now for GBA. My dad brought it home for us one day as a surprise on Eid, me the black one, and my older brother the blue one. We went to Fry's Electronics after Eid Prayer to buy games. I can't for the life of me remember what my brother got, but I mistakenly got Quad Desert Fury because I thought racing ATVs in the desert was a sick concept. It still is, but my god the execution on that game was awful... For NDS, We got it again on Eid, but this time it wasn't a surprise. I got the Black DS Lite, and my younger brother got the White one. My older brother skipped out and got a PSP. I got Mario Hoops 3-3 (I LOVE this game) and my younger brother bought a TMNT game. Good times. For 3DS, my little brother got it first, he bought OoT 3D and Mario 3D Land, I didn't have any games I wanted to play badly enough to get one for myself, so I just used his when he wasn't (we didn't mind sharing at all, we were all really close with each other). It wasn't until Winter 2013 (my senior year of high school) that I decided to buy myself a Red 2DS and Pokemon Y. My cousin and I were just chillin one day and went to Target and I pulled the trigger on it. I later bought a New 3DS XL Galaxy second-hand For Switch, I was trying to buy at launch, but I wasn't able to until a month or so later. I bought MK8D and BotW once I managed to buy one

My first console was the Wii and I got Mii Party on it, a bunch of shovelware like a Disney Princess version of U Draw, I got Wii Sports Resort and all the other Wii games I played with my cousins on their Wii. Then I got a 3DS in 2015, and it was meant to be the New 3DS XL, which is apparently what my mum ordered, but we got a 3DS XL. My first games on that were Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Bros and Mario Golf: World Tour. I played DTB first and I think that's how I fell in love with Mario games. I loved it so much, and still do! Then I only heard of the WiiU bc my cousins got it, and I got it the Christmas after. It was bundled with Mariokart 8, and I also got Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. I loved both games (yes, even Ultra Smash bc I didn't have much to compare it to) and I got Nintendoland after played it A LOT with my cousins, and it was one of my favourite games on there. That's the end of my incredibly long console story. If anyone actually bothered reading this, then I'd be surprised 😂

First GBA game was Metroid: Zero Mission, because I waited until they released the SP so that I wouldn't have to rely on buying batteries all the time. First Gamecube game was Super Smash Bros. Melee, my friend kept playing it with me on his console, and I ultimately decided that I must have a copy of this game and console for myself. First DS game was Super Mario 64 because I was never good at playing the original game so this allowed me to play it with more ease and a lot of additional features. First Wii game was Super Paper Mario which I bought on discount before I even got the console (took me a few months to finally get a Wii). First 3DS games were Super Mario 3D Land and Nintendogs + Cats when they were bundled with the handheld. First Wii U game was New Super Mario Bros. U, got it on launch day when I picked up my deluxe Wii U.

My first Nintendo console was the DS, I had NSMB and Nintendogs. I also had some EA games like MySims kingdom and some LPS games, and probably some more stuff falling under the "Shovelware" category. I got that on the Christmas of 2009. I had a Wii around the same time. I played NSMBW, SMG, SPM, Wii Sports, Wii Play, MP9(...), and some other games like Just Dance 2, and MySims. I remember going over to my friend's houses and playing NSMBW and jumping on each other's heads because we were playing with the maximum number of players, so chaotic lmao. And bringing my DS to my after school program and playing on that while watching my friends play at the same time. EDIT: whoah I forgot all about download play, I think I only used it once at a lame family reunion and omg that turned the whole thing around and I had a blast playing with my cousin :)

My first console was a white GBA. I think the first game was Golden Sun. It might also been Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. I picked up a Game Cube holiday 2003. There was a bundle available that came with a platinum colored GameCube, two controllers, and Mario Kart double dash. I don’t remember if I got a DS first or the Wii. DS is pretty boring. I just bought it at the store. In hindsight I should have waited for the DS lite. My first DS game was Advance Wars Duel Strike. Like most people, I had trouble finding a Wii until one day I spent all day looking at the stores until I found the last store had just received some in stock. My first Wii game was Twilight Princess. I was one of the first adaptors for 3DS. I don’t remember my first 3DS game. My game logs says Super Street Fighter IV. I bought a WiiU on launch day. I got the deluxe version which came with Nintendoland. I also picked up New Super Mario Bros WiiU. I upgraded my 3DS to the XL version because there was a promotion where if you bought an XL and a game then you could get Pokémon X or Y for free. I also upgraded to the new 3DS. I never bought any new 3DS specific games although Hyrule Warriors should have be an exclusive. I was able buy a Switch on launch day. They told me they ran out of the ones with the neon red/blue Joy Con. They just had the grey ones. That was fine with me. I also preordered the special edition of Breath of the Wild.

My first Nintendo game would be Mario Kart 64. The second one would be Brain Age for the Ds, but I think that I never had experience a Nintendo standalone game until Kirby Squeak Squad, which to this day is one of my favorite games, and probably the one that I have replayed the most.

Alex! never stop being a linguistics nerd. i am the one in the comments who is pleased. BUT even without an explicit comparand you MIGHT argue that a comparative like "newer" can generate an implicature of "somewhat new" (maybe relative to an implicit context of "stuff we consider sort of old"). food for thought, peeve on!!

Funny fact: When I got my SNES back holiday 1992, my first game was not Super Mario World. Nope, my family bought me just the console, bought an extra controller, and the game they bought with it was Street Fighter 2. To this day, I have to believe that cost way more money than if they had just bought the pack in SKU and then I could get SF2 down the line. I might have been the only person I knew who had to buy SMW from Toys R Us. I felt like “can I really buy this ubiquitous game for full price?” But in the end it all worked out.

Pokémon Ruby was the first Pokémon game I finished all by myself. I watched my older brother play up to Gen 2 because I couldn't read English properly until I was 10 (it's my second language). I had the Indigo Purple GBA all through its lifecycle and still regret trading it in for a DS Lite. My other favourite games were Sonic Advance 2 and Minish Gap which was the last Zelda game I played before BOTW.

I got a GameCube for Christmas the year it came out but I was playing it before Christmas by unwrapping it and playing Rouge Squadron 2 and then putting it back before my parents got home from work. I had no memory card at the time and the only reason I could play Rouge Squadron 2 was GameStop sold my parents an opened copy as new so they didn't notice I'd been playing it 😂
