General overview and guide to disassembly.
Note: A few weeks ago I took this rifle to the range and shot a 1.8" 4 shot group at 200 yards using Federal 180gr Soft Point ammunition! Don't underestimate the capabilities of this fine tool.

A gunsmith said to never remove the barrel unless absolutely necessary. He said to always remove the firearm and clean around the gas system after shooting it or outside in rain and snow. The rifle rails should be oiled and remove the magazine and trigger mechanism to clean. Always use a good gun grease along the rails and use a small amount on the bolt lugs. The chamber needs to be cleaned as these are the reasons for reliability issues extracting a case since rust will develop. Using the grease helps with avoiding the nicks or chatter marks. Proper cleaning is necessary with these rifles. Remington included an angled bore brush for the chamber that is used from the ejection side. This helped greatly improve the reliability issues many people experienced owning these rifles. If you have rust in the chamber. You will need to remove the barrel. Their is a special tool for removing the barrel nut that costs $75 with shipping. You will need a metal polish like Flitz to clean up the chamber using a dremel brush.

That is a fine rifle to shoot. My first rifle I bought was a 7400 in 308. It cycles the 10 round triple k's very well. It was my affordable BAR. Still have it 15 years later. I love it as much as my ar-10

I don't know of any videos that show how to clean it, but here are some tips. The first thing that I do after removing the trigger/fire control group is I clean the barrel. To do this, use a bore brush and dip it in Hoppes #9 or some other cleaner/solvent. If you want to keep your bore in the best shape, be sure to only PULL the brush through from the chamber end towards the muzzle (ie, in the same direction as the bullet). After this, I drop some 3in1 oil wherever there are moving parts.

I inherited this very same rifle from my great uncle. 84 yo bachelor, land owner lifetime farmer, never held a public job, never had a driver's license lol. I was his sole heir, land farm guns trucks tractors the lot. Rip uncle Paul, you killed lots of deer with this rifle. About to take it apart for the first time.

After you oil the bolt and the trigger group, it is time to remove the fore-end. To do this, use a quality screwdriver and unscrew the screw under the barrel at the end of the fore-end. It wont fall out, but you'll know when it won't get any looser. Once this is done, pull the fore-end straight forward and it will come off (it might be a little tight). With this off, wipe off any grime and buildup on the guide rod and spring. Also, lube the action bars (just one or two drops).

If you look at the serial number on the gun you should be able to google it and check the year it was made. The 740 was only made from 1955 - 1960 so that should help you narrow it down.

I have heard these old rifles were made to fire a lighter round than this up to date amo. I have this rifle. Thats what I was told

You were probably told that because these guns, specifically the 740, are known to chew themselves up. Hotter/stronger ammo will definitely the rifle to wear out faster. There’s a part in the video here where I try to show where the bolt cams into the receiver and causes damage.

that mag is not the right one for that gun, that is for the 7600 pump. The proper mag will have a bolt release on the left side.

there not just nicks. there caused by the bolt. they don't have a bolt stop. but you can make one. they will have to be addressed. they will eventually cause the bot to stop and maintain battery. you will have to tear it down. and you will, most likely have to make some tools. if you let it go the gun will be a wallhanger

is there a bolt hold-open feature on this rifle ? or you have to stick something in to keep it opened while out in the field ?

Could you make a video on completely taking the 740 apart? The bolt, barrel and all. I don't mean take the trigger group apart just the bolt and barrel to be able to re-blue the rifle.
