I just bought a Remington 870 Fieldmaster Supermag. It came with walnut wood furniture and a 28" barrel vent rib. Looks and feels amazing. I think you should have looked for one with the furniture you wanted instead of whatever this plastic one is

Completely agree with your review and it hurts my feelings. My father has a Remington 150th anniversary 870 that my mother got him new on their anniversary many years ago. It is truly drool worthy. Gorgeous high polish blue, beautifully figured walnut, two barrels, all in a custom soft case. I really hope Remington can get back to quality.

Starting with the “Express” line of 870’s final milling was excluded. They can be slicked up by smoothing out the rough cut marks inside the receiver & by slightly filing the rough edges of the action bars. The hammers, made differently than the older models can be ground & polished to take the grab out of the cocking /ejecting operation. Basically the new models are not finished as well as the older models.

As a gun guy I can't understand another gun guy purchasing something with so many "flaws" that repulses them. Why buy polymer if you want wood? Everyone knows what each company offers at each price point, and the internet allows you to research.... Kinda sounds silly to have so many complaints when you buy the entry level model.

I removed the wood and replaced it with a set if Bell & Carlson synthetic Bottomland camo. I have taken geese and turkeys. ONLY MISTAKE I made buying it was I traded a Ithaca 51 10ga semi to buy it... But mine runs perfect Im glad I have it. I am a 870 fan must have 7/8 of them in all gauges and different variants

I bought an old 870 wingmaster made in 1958 fired a lot, smooth as butter and still solid as the day it was made, despite some bluing wear and the wood needing some attention, still a serviceable shotgun, the quality has really gone off a cliff with remington and its sad to see, also for some reason they stopped selling 870 parts to the public

I bought one about 7 yrs. ago. Evidently, a lot has changed. Mine came camouflaged from one end to the other. It has the honeycombed butt pad, polymer stock but the stock seems to be heavier than the one portrayed here. The trigger guard is metal. Basically, mine seems to be better built, even though it's not as well built as my 870 that I got back in 76. I bought mine used for $350 and added an extra full coyote choke tube. With #4 buckshot, it's quite effective at 50+ yds. and using regular #4 shot, it does a job on turkeys. Here's my suggestion and it applies to ALL firearms. NEVER buy any firearm until you have a chance to inspect it in your hands. That way you can nit pick before laying down the cash. BTW, of course the barrel would look thin once you remove the choke tube. The choke tube would add thickness to the barrel once it's installed.

I picked up an 870 Supermag turkey about 6 years ago. It kills turkeys but I definitely don'y love it. I bought a 16 gauge 870 Wingmaster from a local shop for $180. It had been improperly stored and had bad receiver pitting. But action and everything else was flawless. I sandblasted and blued the reciever and use it as a squirrel/rabbit/upland gun. I also have a 1941 WInchester Model 12 in 16 and a Remingtom Model 31 in 20 gauge. Those guns have more quality and character than the new 870 by a mile.

I was gifted a Remington Model 870 Wingmaster with only one barrel which is vent rib with front post sight, no rear sights, and modified choked barrel, back when I was a very young adult. The double slides make it strong (I've seen pump shotguns with the single slide rail failing and breaking) and I never once had a problem with the shotgun I own. Yet I am sure that I would not buy a new plastic model. Oh, I own a savage 7MM-08 with a seemingly better, but still, plastic stock. A Remington 870 tears down quickly and easily for thorough cleanings. My bottom line is I'll happily keep the old one and pass on the new one.

From looking at that particular model that doesn’t look like a new REM Arms production, that appears to be a freedom group production shotgun, rem arms discontinued the express line and from what I can tell is test firing it’s guns and doing more polishing using better forged/billet parts instead of mim, plus they’re now drilled and taped.

I have a 1951 Remington 870 TC trap. Great trigger beautiful gun action smooth as glass. They don’t make them like they used to. Those soft butt pads are much better to reduce recoil. The thin barrels make the gun much more balanced. Mossberg makes a full camo 935 3 1/2 inch with a 10 gauge barrel .773 diameter for $600. Very soft recoil

I got a Remington 870 Tactical Express a few years ago (just before the bankruptcy). I too didn't like the cheap polymer furniture so I replaced it with Magpul (both stock, forend and barrel clamp). The MIM extractor I believe was the cause of occasional failure to extract issues so I swapped it with a Volquartsen replacement that is machined and that has fixed the shell extraction issues. I swapped the cheap plastic follower with a red aluminum hi-vis replacement. The finish is notoriously cheap and prone to enabling rust so I had it Cerakote coated. I got the 870 as my first shotgun on pure name recognition but I had no idea at the time how much the brand had declined. With all the fixes and modifications I've done, it works great now but that I had to spend a few hundred bucks to get it to that point is kind of a downer. I've since gotten a Mossberg 590A1 and it's definitely my go-to for home defense. It's the 18.5" (6+1 capacity) version and has a simple bead sight. I swapped out the furniture with Magpul on that one as well just out of preference for the ergonomics plus a sling and Surefire light. Yeah, the receiver is aluminum but the bolt and barrel lockup is steel on steel. The trigger guard is metal on the A1 version though the standard 500/590 has polymer for that part. Also, in terms of the best traits for a bird hunting shotgun, what are the benefits of a heavier wood stock over a lighter and easier to carry polymer stock? Are there recoil mitigation benefits? Does a more solid stock mount to your shoulder better?

I read an article where after their bankruptcy. Remington said they would be building a cheaper version of guns. I wouldn't be surprised if the parts come from China. People in the comments were saying don't buy an 870 made after 2019 because it won't be what your use to or expecting. Mossberg is getting the same way. I own a 1983 Mossberg 500 and a 1989 Maverick 88 both have smooth action and are built like tanks. I bought another Maverick 88 in 2020 and it was a piece of crap! Built nothing like its 1989 brother. I also bought a Mossberg 590 and it is heavy as hell with gritty action. I'm going to start looking for older model shotguns! When they were built with pride.

Last year I purchased a 1981 manufactured 12 ga 870 from a friend that appears to have never been fired and is in 100% condition. These are the ones I go for. I now own two, a 1974 Ducks Unlimited model that I purchased in 1975 and the forementioned 1981. These guns will not only last the rest of my life but most likely my Grandson will enjoy them though out his life as well. Luckily I have an older model that came with wooden furniture, swapped those out for some camo furniture with a nice matching sling. Badass shotgun, definitely going to do a tube extension and a side saddle as the final upgrades. I would still never buy any generic shotgun brands like the Chinese knockoff. To me the furniture might not be perfect, but the guts of the gun are completely fine. It seems like you maybe should’ve done some research before purchasing this shotgun if you really don’t like it that much. Not saying the quality control isn’t worse because it is. But it seems like an easily avoidable purchase. Happy shooting brother!

You can still get the shiny blue finish. But you must order the gun. Few dealers stock the Wingmaster finish 870s. What you bought was the "Sportsman" finish 870. Get dealer to order a "Wingmaster" for you. To get an 870 with forty years past finish would double the price. I have several with the new type finish---they work just fine.

My brother owns an old one and it’s a great weapon. I went with with the Pardner version of it in 12ga. $100 buy. Truly, I’m a 20 gauge guy with many of them. The Pardner, I have beaten the living sh.t out of it and has never failed. It’s truly a shame they gotten so corporate that quality = how cheap can we make a gun. They should have sold it back to Kevin at Q when they had the chance.

It’s 2022 almost 2023 if you can actually get a firearm you want it’s going to be a project and a lot of custom work to make it nice quality. I have a roundhill group Remington 870 express tactical that I have completely torn down and rebuilt to be much more durable and better quality. I’m in the process to doing the same to my wife’s and sons 870 express’s. Good shotguns but they take some work. That being said I don’t hunt with them anymore, I use a Winchester SX4 3” and Stoeger M3500 3.5” semi autos for hunting.

For a 3 1/2” magnum I’ll stick to the Benelli Super Nova…I used to be an 870 fan…my favorite is still my old 870 Wingmaster LW 20 gauge magnum, bought before Remchokes…to change chokes, you change barrels (I have the three…IC, M and F)…yep the “checkering” is the pressed in type that is the typical old school Remington…pressed into the lightweight mahogany stock, but the fit, finish and quality is still old style Remington. It pains me to see once iconic companies spiral downward after being bought out by “holding companies” who have zero interest in the product and its history…I hope Remington as well as Marlin will be able to regain the quality of their past…keep up the good, unbiased and informative videos 🤘🤘🤘

Excellent review. It’s sad that Remington is not what it use to be. I guess finding parts is going to be difficult for the older ones. I called Winchester about a 1300 and they were rude and said they don’t have parts for them anymore. I guess I will go with mossberg since that’s what I can afford and customer service is stellar. I miss that wood and craftsmanship of old.

The right polymers and GF reinforced polymers are much better than wood. That being said, most companies try to cheap out on the polymer type used, and the amount of glass fiber reinforcement. Glass fibers wear out the tooling dyes quicker, & is more costly. Unfortunately I feel the 870-1100 is a cheap knock off, compared to what it used to be..
Mossberg 590 vs Remington 870 - NOT EVEN FAIR.
