I have a 25 and a 30 in the model 8 and a 300 Savage in the 81. These were the guns the old timers used when I began deer hunting in Michigan. They're my favorite too! I also have a model 14 and 141 because sometimes a pump rifle is just needed!

When I was a kid (in Michigan) my dad deer hunted with his (in 300 savage, open sight). I drooled over that gun. One season after I became an adult he showed up with a modern run of the mill 30-06. He traded the 300 in! I was heart broken.

Thank you for sharing, I was not familiar with the Remington 8. Very nice Footnote - I have a 742 carbine in 308 and have hunted with it since 1973. I have no issues with it at all, very reliable. However, I perform PMCS (preventative maintenance checks & services) every time I use a firearm. Ballistol for cleaning, Hoppes 9 for lubrication.

I have a 1927 Remington Model 8, in 25 caliber. Rather unusual and very hard to find ammo for it. In fact I have frequently gone to the massive gun shows here in Texas and I have never seen a single 25 Remington round for sale. Even if I can never shoot this gun because lack of ammo, I will never sell it because it was purchased new by my grandfather in 1927, he used it to hunt deer and elk for subsistence. It's been in my family for almost 92 years. Thanks for the video. I found this video because I saw you holding the model 8 in the intro for the Winchester 1300 video.

Greetings to you in Texas - your grandfather bought well - very scarce and the most comfortable round to shoot in the Model 8. Ammo is tricky to find for sure. I know a fellow who uses brass from another cartridge - I'll find out more and write again. Thanks for writing. I'd never sell it either.

The Netflix movie The Highway Men has many excellent Fireams used during the Bonnie and Clyde ambush. The .35 Remington caliber is very popular in the Northeast and parts of Canada for hunting. The Remington Model 8 and 141 in .35 Remington are becoming more valuable. The Marlin 336 in .35 Remington became more popular with hunters that could mount a scope or couldn't use a Semi Auto for hunting.

Thanks boost - I was surprised how good that movie was - and you're right - they got things right gun wise. I was waiting for Costner to come out with an M4 Carbine with grenade launcher and his buddy, an RPG-7; but it didn't happen this time. The 8 and 81 are going up and still undervalued I think. Handle and hunt with one of these - and one has a real experience - but you know that. Of course, the Marlin has a star on the Gunwood walk of fame. Thanks for the note!

I recently “discovered” this rifle while watching the documentary about the guns used to end the violence of Bonnie and Clyde. So I’ve been researching them and a search turned up your channel. Frank Hamer, a Texas Ranger of some renown, carried this rifle in .35 Remington caliber. John M. Browning, the inventor of this gun, was a genius, but my oh my it must kick with that hard plastic butt pad! I owned a Winchester model 70 in .35 Whelen and it was a thumper on both ends, but I had a very nice Pachmayr recoil pad on my rifle. Thank you so much for your wonderful video about this great rifle. 🇺🇸

I had written you before about issues with the Remington 742 and the chatter issues due to weak recoil springs and stamped receivers . We do have a Remington 740 in .308 Winchester . Hello, I have this same firearm in my collection in 95% condition and it is, in my opinion, one of the most unique yet functional and dependable firearms I own. I use it as a "fun gun" and only shoot it at the range. It was manufactured in 1928 and it has never jammed. I have always felt that this gun, along with the later model 81 were amongst the last firearms that Remington built "up" to a standard instead of "down" to a price point. Cheers, Steve

It was discussed that the Rem. 742 was based on the 1100 shotgun receiver. Here we have a similar situation where the model 8 owes a lot of it's technical features to John Browning's earlier design of the Browning A-5 shotgun....also marketed as the Remington model 11. Interesting how once a design is in place that it can be applied to different types of firearms.

As a gun owner with 65 years experience, I've personally known of two friends who had a semi-auto rifle that failed to feed the ammo after one or two shots. I asked both friends if they kept the gun loaded all the time. They answered in the affirmative. Conversations with a gunsmith confirmed my suspicions. The gunsmith said that when you leave a repeating firearm loaded that it compresses the spring causing the spring to take a "set" thus weakening the spring. He replied that his recommendation for a personal protection firearm would be a double barrel shotgun or a revolver.

Nowadays everyone is an expert and they all have an opinion even though they have no experience. My favorite example was the Remington 710. It was not a pretty rifle or a high class rifle, but it was a serviceable entry level budget rifle. At the time, it was less expensive than a Savage or NEF and allowed many on a budget to get into hunting. I applauded this and still think they felt pretty good. But thanks to the internet everybody hated that rifle because they were junk, they didn't shoot, they would fall apart, etc. In nearly every single instance when I questioned the person complaining, and asked them about their experience with it they almost always gave me a cookie cutter "Well I never actually owned one, but I heard/read/saw......" The internet is really good at regurgitating bad information. I decided to buy one of my own, a 7mm Remington Magnum. I mounted a scope, bought a couple boxes of Remington 140 grain core-lokt's and proceeded to shoot a bunch of 1 to 1.5 inch groups. No failures. I then sold that rifle to a friend with the reassurance it is a good, functional rifle. He still owns it. I am a fan of anything that is priced so almost anybody can afford it. But people have a nasty habit of belittling those who may not be able to afford anything better and the equipment they use. So I will always support those products. And as a hilarious side note, almost all the people who complained about the 710 for its crudeness and appearance all seem to be in love with the Savage Axis. Now THAT is an ugly rifle....

HAHAHA! Funny you mention the 710. Someone was complaining about that firearm at work on Monday. I own one in 30-06 and I really like it as a hunting rifle. I don't shoot it a whole lot, but it has taken probably over a dozen deer. I have harvested game with it and so has my little brother. I got it for Christmas when I was 13 because my dad was afraid id damage my Win 94 in 32 spl. It is very accurate and I have no intentions of letting it go.

Most people do not clean and lubricate their guns properly . They use it and fire it only a few times then put it away and fouling does it's work. Next time they get it out a year later the action is sluggish ,but it's the guns fault.Two or three years into this cycle and they have a problem. If in storage be sure to clean and lubricate before storage and before the next use.

I just purchased a used 1973 742 carbine with the basket weave stock in 30-06. The basket weave stock and bluing is in absolutely perfect condition. Absolute beautiful rifle. After much reading about these rifles, (after Impulsively buying it due to the beauty of its external condition...) I decided to disassembe the entire rifle and get an understanding of the mechanism before I give it any use. While I do not have the full history of the rifle, upon disassembly, 4 things stand out. 1) It has never been disassembled. 2) as a result of number 1, It has never been thoroughly cleaned. 3) at the very most, the rifle has had maybe 50 rounds shot since 1973. 4) minor surface rust in the bore - most likely it was used for hunting in cold weather, externally wiped down and put in the closet with condensation in the bore. This surface rust cleaned up, and the bore is almost as bright as another brand new unfired rifle I own. Upon seeing the inner workings of this rifle, I can certainly see how these rifles can become jam masters if they are not kept clean. The 742, is indeed, a bit more challenging to disassemble than say an AR rifle, but still fairly simple. For comparison, it can take a good half hour to carefully disassemble and not ding up the receiver etc. Because of this reason, I can see how these get neglected and left with years of junk in the action and the receiver, it truly needs to be taken apart to clean it well. The years of junk will begins to eat away at the rails of the receiver. Once this wear begins, it will exponentially get worse if the receiver is not cleaned out thoroughly. I haven’t even fired mine yet, but I am 100 percent confident it will have no issues cycling and firing. Really looking forward to owning this one for many years.

What a great post. Everyone should read your advice. My 742s run smooth and no problem - but I keep them clean. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to take the barrel off as some people do though; I'm not sure if you do. Anyway, guns are meant to be cleaned and if they are - there is no reason for them not to run the same as when they left the factory - unless parts are broken - which is a different story. You have a great approach to guns!

Finally had the opportunity to get this to the range over the weekend. Considering the countless negative reviews on this rifle across the internet, I guess I got very lucky with my purchase. I absolutely love this rifle. Over the course of several hours, (letting it cool etc) I put 60 rounds through the rifle and did not experience a single jam in the new old stock magazines I managed to purchase.. I had one failure to feed with the magazine that was original to the rifle, so that magazine is now retired. Used factory loads of various makes mostly 150gr, then ended the day with a magazine of 165gr which also cycled flawlessly. For a rifle made over 45 years ago, I am impressed. It was 15-20 degrees and fairly windy so I can’t pass judgment on accuracy yet. Great value so far!

I agree with your comments on the Remington Model 8. I wish mine had been in .35 Remington or .30 Remington as the recoil on my .300 Savage was just too much to be called enjoyable. But, the rifle was well made and as you point out unique. Again, a rifle that should be brought back, but not sure the “new” Remington company would agree. Just just internet rumors and wishful thinking. If you can find a model 8 or 81 now for less than a grand you're doing good. Ruger is introducing their versions of the Marlin lever actions and the company calling itself Remington is pushing a somewhat improved version of the 870 Express. It's no Wingmaster. In regards to the Remington 742 I've had a couple of them apart and found some chatter marks on the receiver rails, I noticed that the bolt in those rifles floats inside the action bars and under harsh recoil as the action is being slammed back that bolt can rock up and the locking lugs can chew into the receiver. This is the one thing about the rifle I would say is actually a design flaw. Remington did however correct this in the model 7400, as it's bolt mechanism is actually part of the action bar assembly so that way the bolt can't rock under recoil. The 7400 also has a piece of hardened steel inside the receiver where the bolt rides so that it won't wear as easily. So most of the problems were fixed with the 7400 over the 742, however most of the problems people had were failure to extract or failure to feed neither of which were caused by a chattering bolt. Most of these issues were caused by a rusty chamber because of lack of maintenance or a bad magazine spring because people wouldn't empty the magazine when the rifle was being stored. What I was told when I bought my first 742 was that this is a high maintenance rifle. He said at the end of every season when you're done using it take the handguard off and clean the gas system, and clean the barrel clean the bolt guides and pay particular attention to keeping the chamber clean. This is why they originally came from Remington with a chamber brush. I was also told to never store magazines loaded, this will resolve most problems so long as you use it for its designed purpose.

Carbine Williams used the receiver and bolt of a Model 8 and 'grafted' on a barrel and captive 'floating chamber' and did away with the long recoil system. Thus was born, amongst others, the Winchester Model 50/59 fixed barrel shotgun. His tappet invention went into the U.S. .30 cal Carbine. His devices were perfected during his 'stay' in Caledonia Prison!

Hello - I don't think I have a video on the Parker Hale 1200 yet. Quite simply though : I'd buy one in a heartbeat - excellent rifle so long as the bore is decent - better than most new rifles. I'll make a video as soon as I acquire one. Thanks for asking.

Just like other actions on both Winchester and Remington of that era, the alloys are soft. Over decades and a few thousand rounds, the rails wear excessively and start to gaul and case problems. I lost my fathers Remington 22 pump action from the early 70’s just that way. The simple friction of working the action wore it out. I contacted Remington about replacing the action, but they wanted quite a large sum to refurbish the rifle. Eventually you have to put them up and only shoot them occasionally.

Sure wish I could find a few stripper clips for a model 8 for reasonable price , they are stamped and kinda a funny bronze color according to my gunsmith buddy... I have a gunsmith friend who has a model 8. He did comment it takes a special tool to take the special barrel apart, but realistically you should never have to..... and I had a Remington model 4 in 270, and finally gave it to my son. Awesome seems to shoot forever .

Hi Christopher - I haven't been able to get an 85 for the channel yet. I'd buy the 70 10 times out of 10. The 85 is fine - I've examined a couple and shot 1 - but it is a 3 lug Remington 700 variant. The Model 70 is by far the better rifle...in my humble opinion.

Question rather than a comment. On practically all of these the barrel (inside the shroud) was left in the white. A few years ago I purchased an 8 in 30Rem where the barrel was blued and I assumed this was after-market for some unknown reason. I've since seen another with a blued barrel and I notice that yours is blued as well. The contrast between the blued barrel and the bright bolt really stands out. Do you know if yours came this way from the factory or was it perhaps done later?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Milton - I checked with a couple of other owners and theirs are blued as well. Maybe the factory did some blued and some not. The shroud could be a moisture trap so I would think the blued barrel would have been Brownings' preference; or maybe people had their blued after purchase. Sorry I can't know for sure.
@miltonhall7078

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thanks very much. Actually that was a great help. The barrel code on the one I referred to was dated 1934. I've got one from before that and 2 81's after but this was the only one I'd seen that sported a blued barrel. You are definitely correct about the factory doing what sometimes appear to be random changes. I've seen similar, and rather odd, changes on some Rem. pumps I have as well. It almost seemed that they'd say "Let's try this." Like you, I don't know for sure and records of such changes can be scarce or non-existent. Also; the barrel shroud is indeed a trap for all kinds of corrosion and detritus. My first act upon purchasing an 8 or 81 is invariably the complete disassembly and cleaning of the inside of the barrel shroud. Thanks again; you've been a definite help!

I searched for a long time to find a Model 8 up here in Canada. They're out there, but very elusive. The real trouble is finding a good one in .35! All the nice ones tend to be in .30 and .32, probably because they saw less use as the ammunition for them is a lot harder to find.

People often wonder why these didn't see more military service; take one apart and you'll understand why! Take-down is quite simple, but disassembly is another matter. Not horrifically difficult, but fiddly with many small parts that fit into the sides of the receiver in a specific order. There's no way you could do it in a trench or foxhole. They're robust guns, but not quite up to the rigours of military service.

Hello Hagen - Good question. I have a 30-06 older model, a BDL in .308, 2 carbines in .308 and a 6mm rifle. These were all so cheap it was embarrassing. The .308s and 30-06 all shoot to about 2" or less and one carbine shoots around 1 MOA. The 6MM consistently shoots to less than 1 MOA. I have no chatter issues and no problems.

I picked one up last year in 35Rem., I think the 30 & 35 will only hold 4. Sadly the Buttplate on mine was possibly an aftermarket recoil cushion that looks like a giant chewed up eraser. It does have a Lyman aperture sight though! I used only Ballistol and cleaned it up great. These are starting to really command a premium! It’s one of those guns I can’t help but pick up whenever I see it in my case and hold it for a while.

The 742 is such a horrible gun that my father has been using one for 20+ years for deer hunting that he has taken down more than 1 every season for 20+ years! Yup - just terrible.... I am guessing the cure is to trash it and then go spend $3,000+ to keep doing the same thing every year during deer season..... Can others figure out the sarcasim in this comment? Also had an uncle or two that "suffered" with them as they took down deer also but yet they survived the horrible 742s ..... The "herd theory" is being utilized in that "monkey says 742 is bad and other monkeys follow" as even though they never owned one/used one they must be all bad guns - IN THEIR MINDS! Duhhhhhhhh........ The 742 was so bad that Remington had to sell over a million of them..... The larger exact issue is how you take care of the gun as well as any gun for that matter. Much like vehicles on a larger scale - do not take care of it and abuse it besides is not the fault of the manufacturer but the fault of the idiot/moron who does not take good care of it. Many many folks are still using these 742/760 and the rest today and for decades to come.
