To get the best out of 3D printing, it helps if you can design your own parts. In this tutorial series, we will learn to use a free 3D CAD program to do just that.
In this episode, I demonstrate how to upload and modify STEP files into Onshape to suit our specific needs. This rugged box model is very well designed, so it is satisfying to tweak it to fit different objects. I’m going to do just that for some delicate electronics.

Obviously depending on the license but I'd love to see STEP files included in anything online. I include them myself for the same reason. Converting STLs to STEP might work but its not always easy to modify a converted STL because of the split faces.

I wasn't aware about onshape and spent so much time in free version of fusion360. It's so painfull to transform stl to solid, especially when shapes is curved. Thank you so much!

Be aware that with the free version of onshape, everything you make is public, anyone else can look at it and copy it.

Remixing is a great way to tinker. I recently remixed a model and added a few improvements and found the step files more optimized for geometry than stl too.

I have really appreciated these videos. I work in an aerospace machine shop and am responsible for all part marking. Most of it is done in a laser engraver. Aerospace parts can have some crazy shapes so I have been making my own fixtures with our work 3D printer. Yes, we have our own engineering that can make things in CAD but they are way too busy. It has been a blast.

Love the videos! I learned OnShape from your tutorials. I am lost though since I have made a few parametric files in it but I'm unsure of how I should export it to allow for it to be remixed with those filters. Is there a specific file type that I should export it as or is there another way I can share them?

Good real world demo of the direct editing tools in Onshape! I would use the transform by mate connector to move things exactly where you need them in one step (especially for the gasket!)

Very nice video as usual. Would be cool if you could show how to make the text on the box another color if you have one extruder and no mmu or AMS.

That’s easiest to do with the text coming out of the surface, not going into it. How you do it is insert a filament change at the height of the base of the text, different slicers have different ways of doing it. Without a MMU or AMS you should keep colour changes very simple and infrequent, like just for text in top of the model, you really do not want a lot of filament changes.

Can anyone explain the 3 different materials used in the printing? Why those materials? Is there a good guide for filament selection? I've seen strength tests but nothing on practical use cases.

would love to see a video on how to make the sealing gasket. i presume you carved it from the foam, but are there 3d printing alternatives? also a freecad example/hints would be appreciated (I'm very much a novice and enjoy learning the concept but devil is in the details, and learning multiple cad tools a challenge), but understand your reasons for choosing the one cad package.

The gasket is simply printed from TPU, a flexible filament.

How did you make the text flat? When i extrude or remove from the face it effects the whole text sketch. How did you only remove the small outline of the text and not the whole text? Thank you. It has been great following this tutorial to make a custom pencil box with my son.

After creating the text, I selected each letter and then used offset to create the second perimeter. One letter at a time which is slow but it prints much nicer that way.

Hi, what is the difference between increasing the size in CAD as opposed to within the slicer?

The slicer can scale the model uniformly along each axis, but ding it this way will let you change specific parts, but leave other crucial parts unchanged. For example, expanding the size vertically in the slicer will elongate the bolt holes too, so that assembly will be impossible.

I believe what you're seeing is due to the build plate that he's using in the video. When getting the print off the bed, the bottom layer will always have an impression of the bed's texture.

I think it is called PEO plate. He had it in a video a while ago. It a sweet visual and it is smooth.

I notice that while touting the benefit of open source models is to be able to remix them, you print with a printer put out by a company that put most of the machine's tech being derived as open source then said company puts all of that behind a copywrite law. That would be like a car company taking Elon Musk's open source Tesla tech and then copywriting that tech. ...

I hate STL files, they suck sooo much. This format is 40 years old. Why are we still using it. Also STEP sucks as well. I prefer IGS over STEP any day. STEP needs once again special payed licenses most of the time.

Alright if you are clever enough to use fusion 360 and have a fancy 3D high end pricey Bambu Lab X1 Carbon with the also pricey AMS. Not so if those are beyond you.

Not quite what you are trying to say. The video is about Onshape, not fusion. The printer is irrelevant.
