You may have actually covered this later in the video, but on the topic of armor weight: At the extreme upper end of armor weight, your dodge roll degenerate to simply flopping onto the ground, and gradually picking yourself back up. Hilariously, this actually does some pretty decent damage to enemies, and there are builds where you'll sprint up to enemies and flop onto them to cause damage.

Wouldn't call it a surprise tbh, body flop build has been around since the base game (before dlc-exclusive items even existed). It was broken enough that it actually got directly targeted for a nerf iirc

The combat felt great, but the worlds and the story and pretty much everything else felt very drab and sterile to me. This was compounded by the fact that you are expected to see these envinronments over and over and over again to make your builds. That said i did finish the game multiple times with multiple builds, so it wasn't a bad game. I just hope they improved these aspects in the sequel.

@Mortismal Gaming - I think Remnant 2 is going to be the third installment in the series, there's also Chronos Before the Ashes, which plays closer to a standard souls-like. Just an FYI in case you want the "complete" story 😊 And thanks for the great content; greatly enjoy your videos.

This game was really slept on when it first came out. It's good to see that the sequel woke up a lot of interest, and it's finally getting more eyes on it. Really hope Remnant 2 lives up to my expectations (All it takes is not dropping the ball on how good combat feels in this one)

People in the community always say this but this game was promoted hard at the start and Twitch was filled to the brim with streamers playing it. It ended up selling millions and it has tens and thousands of very positive review rates on Steam. I also liked this game and played it for 100+ hours. But this "hidden gem that was slept on" meme is starting to feel like some ironic parody to me every time i come in touch with the community of this game (the subreddit is the same).

Swamps of Corsus also added a lot more content to the Swamp biome itself. The version in the base game is quite noticeably unfinished. If you play the game for the first time with the dlc installed you likely wouldn't notice what was added. Great review as always.

there is something I feel like I have to add as someone who maxed out every trait to max level and got every single item and bested all difficulties including Hell with From Hell mod, 99% of the playerbase will ignore the story because its delivered kinda poorly but if you look for it, the computers mostly, find all the notes and written lore, its remarkably good, its actually really amazing in my opinion, this isnt for most people but just wanted to let everyone who read this know that if you look for good world building and lore there is in this game, is just all written, the characters are legendary on writing but when you encounter them they will let you down and its kinda a bummer, I hope the sequel does right for the characters in writing because they are actually very well written in the lore side of things

I pretty much agree with everything you said about the issues with bosses, the trait system and procedual generation of the biomes, but overall just like you i very much enjoyed the experience. I'm really looking forward to Remnant 2 now, if they can improve on the very solid foundation of the first one it could be one of the greats.

It's funny that you mention the bosses on the bridge, Ixillis? As a boss more designed for coop, I usually play alone but in Souls-like I like the option to help people and in Remnant I also do it even with specific support builds , and this boss is much easier for me alone than in coop. 🤔 As you say, if they clean up the small flaws of the first game, the second can become a great game 🤞

Very nice review, only correction I'd like to give is that the Swamps of Corsus DLC fleshed out the swamps to give it more of a reason to be there as otherwise it felt more of a "filler", it was always available for adventure mode when they added it. Pretty much spot on on my feelings towards this game too, waiting patiently for the sequel to drop and maybe they improve on the story a little bit.

A little bit of lore that's worth mentioning, the story of Remnant while complete on its own also had a prequel in the form of a VR game called Chronos made by the same studio that explores the lore of the game's world in a more in-depth way. Obviously if you can't play it there are ways to read the story synopsis online on wiki sites or here on YT.

You know I remember I launched it once or twice back then when the game became an EGS freebie. I got it, downloaded it, played less than an hour in total, and was so confused. On the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals, the setting, and the overall package seemed solid - but not to my taste, strangely. On the other hand I just didn't get everything else - the mobs felt imbalanced, the combat felt rushed and impossible to enjoy solo (yup, I'm a lone wolf), and the focus on shooting over melee didnt' click with me at all. Fast forward to a week ago, and holy hell, now it just occupies my thoughts completely, and I'm so happy that I can't get it outta my head. Everything now just feels so good - the traits system, the weapon impact, the melee & ranged combat, the level design (which is FANTASTIC!), and above all else - the game features an extremely addicting mix of things that I like so much: Lovecraftian horror, body horror, soulslike mechanics, impactful combat & shooting, roguelite traits system, and truly, deeply, terryfiying lore. Having watched Gemini Home Entertainment ARG beforehand added a ton of interest & satisfaction to my experience, and for me it was an extremely powerful hook when I saw some similarities to it in Remnant. The game immediately skyrocketed into one of my all-time favorites in the genre, and now I eagerly await for the sequel.

@@arthurdent9281 Well, it most certainly is a better (and more comfortable) experience when played in co-op, because, say, mobs' aggroing at you in solo can be quite overwhelming at times. I assume people playing in co-op can just easily run-and-gun through most of the levels, while solo players like me have to much more carefully manage resources when slowly, methodically exploring the levels, dispatching mobs while trying not to aggro too much of them at once. This slower approach surely does increase the time to clear the area, but 'tis not a big trouble for me tbh. Speaking of bosses, I haven't beat many bosses myself yet, but all the bosses I encountered are accompanied by constantly spawning mobs, so it is never a 1v1 (or at least 1v2) fight. But with enough (upgraded) firepower, dodging, and memorizing patterns, they all are doable (in fact, some are extremely satisfying to beat - even in these 'unfair' conditions). So, I would say it really does look like a greater challenge in solo, indeed. But personally that doesn't stop me from playing it, and enjoying it when overcoming the odds.

The co-op difficulty scaling was very significant. I often found content that was very difficult coop and an absolute walk in the park with the same build and difficulty setting in single player mode. In survival mode especially I could easily last 4x longer if I was in single player mode vs with a friend or 2. It was a very fun game. Bring on remnant 2!

I enjoyed playing it solo way more when I did a summoner build, so mobs wouldn't really jump and gang up on me. Then in coop I liked some other dot builds. I really hope that in 2, or even in 1, they change the crystal reset/teleport to a gray screen instead of that white flashbang.

That duo boss was definitely harder with a group, at least with mine. No where to run and hide for a revive, and trying to pass the dps check with a downed teammate (that if you fail and are too squishy leads to a party wipe) can be very tight depending on build/difficulty. I think the idea is to just use your ears for the back boss and eyes for the front boss. Also one of the few bosses without adds, which seems like a deliberate design choice for solo.

I would have liked to see the vaulting trait be replaced with something like a ring that increases vaulting speed and then heals for 5% whenever you do, with like a 3 sec cooldown to prevent balance issues. I think the balance with having it as a trait kinda puts the player in a position to where they aren't going to get that much utility out of it, as you described, or they're going to go so fast vaulting that it removes obstacles from the balancing side of things. I still think that increasing it's speed has utility, but it definitively didn't need to be a trait

It works quite well, especially in solo or as co-op support. I used that exact build to get through some rough fights. The heaviest armor can also help with it - stack both DR and regen, tank through everything while your turret and other summon shred things. Or you can just go all in on vampire tank by using bleed lifesteal instead of summons.

I had been on the fence about it on Steam, but then it was just handed to me, and I ended up liking it a lot. It had some neat lore, good action, and showed promise if they wanted to make sequels. This game is a big reason I keep checking in on Thursdays with Epic to see what they're handing out, because they sometimes hand out some real winners!

I'm not sure if it was a bad seed or just low skill level between me and my friends but I played about 5 hours with two buds and after 5 hours we had gotten zero new guns or armor. We got a few mods that we didn't really vibe with. Between finding all the same stuff and not finding much of it we all were identical and just kind of got bored with shooting things with the same stuff. I'm sure this gets addressed down the line if we stuck with it but man it was not an enjoyable first few hours at least for us.

I installed it after seeing it on the game pass. I’m not going to lie. I’m having a blast playing it. I noticed the new game and thought, Why not give the original a play…. I like the simplicity of the controls. It’s really user friendly. (Says the 36 year old, dad of 5!) 😂 I thought this was a great review. & seeing as I’m by no means near 100% yet. I found this really helpful! 🤜🤛 Thank you!

For the coop aspect i could only attest that they infact didn't really did balanced the coop aspect, you either did nothing the whole time managing adds then wait because you can pull the aggro of the boss and mess up the tempo or burst down the boss so fast that the adds or any form of the bosses attack pattern has a chance to do anything as you skipped phases entirely, lack of build options and potential synergy builds wasn't really planned really well and the constant lack of ammo sharing made it hard for somebody to be efficient with their ammo which made adds as a defence for obtaining bullets pointless in a coop setting as you are more likely then not gonna lose more ammo then getting it back. Traits were good but at the same time felt unimpactful on a coop setting as its hard to differiente from one build to another on what they excel at as they share practicly the same stats. The random generation can be more annoying in coop setting as getting any form of differianting build style is met with re-rolls or finishing the game first, simply put if you want to get a set of armor you would have to pray to rng that it rolls in your first run or you would be stuck with the same type of build as your partner making it no point at all to have a coop partner.

The story can be short I guess but I'm nowhere near the end after 30 hours. I have no idea where to go next 😂

This game at this pricing is definitely a steal. When in Souls i see a bunch of enemies im always annoyed (even when with friends) but in remnant i see a group im rushing in. Dunno how I could describe this, but me noticing an enemy and shoot it first (staggering it), then immediately followed by coop friend's shot (finishing it off) with no word exchange between us... or seeing my friend handling the enemies in front, so I turn back as precaution and shoot a monster that's right behind my friend ready to attack.... god damn it feels so satisfying.

I really enjoy watching your videos, thanks for doing such thorough and consistent job. I really liked this game and I would have to disagree with you about the length because 10hours isn't short if it is 10 hours of good gameplay. I think maybe 5hours would be a bit on the short side but 10 is good. I would much prefer 10 hours of good fun gameplay over a ubisoft game that boasts 100hours of extremely mundane copy and paste busy work.

This is the only game on PS4 that I ever bothered to get a platinum trophy on. I still remember my final build had mods and talents that made it so I could kill enemies without using any ammo. Killing the final boss using only mods was such a rush.

Agreed with basically everything. I hate the amount of minions in certain boss fights, save for the ones where the minions only spawn when the boss is out of the arena. The DLC bosses are much better in that regard, with some of them not even having any minions. The final boss of the DLC was top notch in my book.
