Is it just a fad or the new normal for businesses? Hundreds of thousands of employees took their work online during the pandemic. Four years later, many employers are pushing to bring workers back into the office. This week on What’s America Thinking, host Julia Manchester explores the latest studies on remote work with Jessica Kriegel, chief scientist of workplace culture at Culture Partners.
What’s America Thinking? is a lively, informative show that leans into why Americans are so fed up with the government and its inability to make their lives better. We’ll focus on the people behind the polls, pocketbook issues, the disconnect between Washington and Main Street - what Americans are REALLY thinking!
Make sure to subscribe and join Julia every week as she discusses hot-button issues and hears what America is thinking.

I used to work for a corporation for almost 10 years and the amount of time wasted being in the office, commuting and dealing with coworkers that you didn't want ro talk to, was soul destroying. Remote work for many people is just better in every way and you don't even have to come into the office to collaborate anymore.

I agree 100%. I worked from home in 2020 and 2021, into 2022. We accomplished some major projects that probably went much more smoothly. Also the benefits that you bring up are big reasons for keeping WFH around. It's the older executive mentality that doesn't trust workers they can't see. My manager discussed WFH with all of us before we had to return to the office. One common theme was the flexibility appreciated by the employees and we didn't think anything of giving the company an extra hour or two here and there. I did that quite frequently because I was used to spending 2hrs a day on the road commuting, so it didn't really cost me anything. During high priority activities many of us gave the company 12 hour days, some days even more than 12 hours when we were locked down and couldn't go anywhere. My manager saw that and understood that bringing us back into the office was going to mean less time to give back to the company, and a drop in productivity that the distractions of a noisy open office environment contribute. We lost one of our biggest engineering assets when the company mandated return to the office. He was such a big loss that the company allowed him to continue working remotely for about six months while they figured out how to replace him. I'm planning on retiring in the next 5-7 years, right about the time we have more large projects that will be coming due one behind the other. My manager has expressed to me that he is worried about my retiring, along with the only other 20+ year engineer left in my group who may retire before I do as he's 10 years older than me. We've got a lot of smart engineers but they're all young and only have a few years of experience. They may be up to speed to replace us old timers in that amount of time, IF they stick around. Keeping today's generation around is turning out to be a challenge, especially in the age of the inflation we see today. A lot of them are only sticking around for 2-5 years and then moving on to a higher paying gig. And instead of hiring an experienced (expensive) engineer to replace them, they start over with a 25 year-old college grad (cheap) with a year or two under their belts and we start training them from scratch again. The modern workplace is rapidly changing and employers are going to be hurting if they don't try to understand and learn to work with employees who now demand more than just a paycheck.

Exactly, like the housing crash, another one is just over the horizon for empty office buildings. Being single I am way more productive WFH, too many distractions at the office. Near the end of covid we moved to a much smaller office, the options are full time remote, hybrid and full time office, the choice is yours.

BINGO! There's also the economic impact on retail and hospitality that have been arguing for the end of WFH. Stores, restaurants, fast food outlets have lost a lot of business that office workers used to provide. The local governments are also pushing for an end of WFH, they're dependent on the tax revenues that workers bring to their cities and counties.

At least in manufacturing, production space makes money. Office space costs money. Companies that can minimize the number of cardboard cubes they have taking up space in their building can dedicate more of that space to actually produce products people want to buy.

I have been remote for 4 years. I have been more productive while taking care of my 3 kids. When I worked in office my boss would call us into her office and gossip for hours and talk about her life problems. She was a micro manager and would get mad at us for not hitting our goals but the reason why we didn’t was because she loved to talk! It’s been nice being able to focus on my work. I get all my work done before the end of day and I truly love the work life balance I have.

Office buildings could become data centers in the future, like when many malls were converted to data centers. Sure the building price would take a hit now, but still gather some money from rents. That and commercial tenants (like gyms, coffee, nightclubs and what not). It would also alleviate city traffic congestion and open up new revenue streams for businesses in suburban areas where the workers relocate to.

I work in software and could do much of my job fully remote. But meetings in person add something, when you have to whiteboard a system design, and even just knowing when to talk. But I also like getting code running during all hands meetings. Teams/Slack kind of ruins focus work at your desk no matter where you are, luckily I discovered how to mute multi person channels so I don't have that bell ringing every time someone chats to someone else. So hybrid for me I guess. My office commute is 15 minutes, I'd be a lot more anti office if it were an hour or more.

@MiguelCedenoLozano

@@eliot7189It all depends on how "productivity" is measured. If constantly moving your mouse and keyboard is what's considered productive over the completion of tasks then it's just bureaucratic gaslighting. It costs the employer more to pay for office building leases too after all. They just want more control over their wage slaves who never get raises anyways. Over the pandemic, they've learned that they can hire people overseas for less pay too. So there isn't really an incentive for either party to continue office work aside from optics that are artificial anyways.

@@tengamangapiu There should definitely be laws set in place for "American companies" to give priority to "American employees" plain and simple especially when large corporations receive tax cuts at the expense of tax paying citizens who also paid massive tuitions to schools that "guaranteed" them a job at these companies. But our empire is crumbling and our government doesn't serve its people. We're just livestock. Our tax money ultimately benefits foreign governments and their citizens.

Otherwise, I'll be driving to a skyscraper just to join calls on Teams with colleagues a continent away. 🙄Hybrid is also detrimental to personal finances because it means an employee has no choice but to live closer to a hub, which is always located near or at VHCOL downtown centers.

Employers want to control their employees, they have commercials least a lot of other companies depend on workers traveling to work and also restaurants in work area etc. But my concern is that the employee maybe the loser in the end because the employers will accept this is the new norm but they will also adapt to maximize profits. Hence outsource job will increase especially those that can be done 100% remotely. Then you add an AI top the next decades a lot of jobs will vanish employees need to be ready to adapt as well.

Lots of reasons. Some industries are regulated such that you have to be a US citizen to do them. Others you have to be on US soil while doing them. Also some jobs rely on knowledge of American culture to be done competently. And for others there simply isn't a sufficient concentration elsewhere of people with the technical knowledge needed, though that last is changing the most rapidly. Also American companies have cultural expectations that can't always be fulfilled with fully foreign workforces. For example, in my company I can recall the global hunt for programmers who could do what I needed, trying to pay as little as I could for high quality output. I went through 5 teams in India before giving up. Their culture just doesn't work with the way I work. I eventually had to hire 2 Americans and a bunch of Ukrainians.

Working from home is easier for some jobs with no commute. However, there are tools that take advantage and ruin it for everyone. Remote work does effect productivity for most functions, that is why you have people taking multiple work from home jobs which means your aren't fully working for any of them and most monitoring systems to prevent this aren't allowed. I have also know people seeking work from home to avoid daycare for their children, so these people are either not doing their jobs or they are neglecting their children (4 yrs and under). I do think people who have to commute should be paid more.
