Here we see one of our arborists in their natural habitat. So we’re working locally today in Caringbah. We're removing this huge tree by crane. We're using the crane access method where the climber rides the hook. So he's using the hook as his high point for his lifeline because it's unsafe to climb the tree and there's no other point of access. A lot of customers initially freak out when we say that we're going to use the crane, but it's definitely the safest way to remove some trees and it's an approved WorkCovered method that’s been used for many years. So, the chains are being set. His lifeline is still attached to the hook and he's going to climb back over to his cut point, take his lifeline off the crane and then he's going put his pole strap and lifeline around the tree before he makes the cut and the crane can take away that large piece of timber, safely without it dropping down onto the building site. So it's really important how the climber sets up the chains because we don't want to shock load the crane with unintended weight and we want to ensure that when he cuts the branch, that the crane lifts the branch away as smoothly as possible. So he's still using the hook as his highpoint. See the climbing arborist is walking back from setting the chains so he can get back to his cutting location of the tree safely. There would be no other way for the climber to get out to that point without a crane as there's no high point in this tree. Therefore it's the safest point of access and that's why WorkCover approves, specifically arborists, to ride the hook. So he’s getting in position for his cut point. He's attaching his pole strap in preparation to remove his lifeline from the hook of the crane. So now he communicates with the dogman about the expected weight of the branch. We've estimated this branch to be 500 kilos and we've currently got 400 kilos of force on the jib. So for this one, he's going to do a top scar and that's going to allow him to lift the branch up with the crane. So now he's asked the crane driver to lift up the branch. It's going to hold, hold, hold while he brings the branch up vertically, allowing some minor cuts just to make sure it lifts smoothly and the center of the hook is away from the climber. So when the branch releases, it's going to be moved away from the climber. Nice and smooth. So that is a perfect lift. There will be no shock load to the crane and the crane operator can move the branch safely away from the climber and not over the climber. The climbers love crane jobs because often they have to wait around. It's a lot easier on their body, a lot less physical and a lot safer for them.

Remove a tree twice as fast... And thrice as expensive!

We consider a lot of things before doing a job; sometimes it's more expensive, yes, but it is safer for our employees and people's properties/belongings.

Not always more expensive since it can save a lot of labor. I've taken out trees in a few hours with a crane that would have taken a few days without one.

As a kid back in the 70's working my way through college, I was a ground man for a tree removal crew in St. Louis MO. We would remove giant oaks, sycamores, hickories, and maples trees in yards the size of postage stamps. It took great skill on part of the climbers, and it was quite dangerous. Electric lines, extremely loud chain saws (often with crummy or no mufflers and no ear protection), falling debris, and ropes with the possibilities of entanglement, for example. It was a family business, so no buckets were the general rule. I still have tinnitus that I blame on the noise, the climber is lucky to still be alive due to being shocked; and bad backs are the rule. It was exciting and challenging work, but dangerous. I wish that a crane could have been used on many occasions!

Thank you, Barb for sharing your story with us. Safety is number one priority for shanes trees and every morning, before the job even start, we do a safety meeting about the job and talk about any challenges we can encounter. We are lucky to work in 2023 where machinery allows us to make our job a lot easier. Take care.

I won’t work a crane unless I can ride the ball. I’m not paying for all that extra time of me climbing around to set everything when I can be out right we’re I need to be. On top of that you got to go about the take down differently than if you can work off the ball . I had one company that I called when I first started working for myself that wouldn’t allow me to to fly I said well go home I had asked when I called to set the appointment an was told I could fly on the ball. The tree was rotted it was the the whole reason I got the crane . They wanted me to pay for the travel time was big argument but they never got any money from me lol worked out well tho cause it takes a different crane operator to do tree work than just pick stuff up an put down. On roof or something tree work has a lot variable's

Isn't it kind of funny to have that huge piece of equipment to put a man holding a saw in it. Don't you think it would be better if there was just a saw at the end of it? You have that huge truck for a man carrying a tiny little saw. It looks like it's a enough equipment to just tear the whole tree out the ground. Then they use it on every job. Don't you save money if you can do it with just rope and saw? I can cut a tree well enough to do that. You'll see the south american cruise with all of that equipment and like 10 people for one tree. I don't understand. I used to work clearing building lots and it was one man on a bulldozer and me with a saw to clear an acre.
