Quickly removes rust and pitting from Chrome plated parts.
ANY COLA WILL WORK even PEPSI, Diet Coke just isn't sticky
If you want to keep your chrome looking good and help polish it back to high luster use this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000...
WHY IT WORKS:The tiny bit of Phosphoric Acid in the COLA neutralizes the rust and turns it black. The Phosphoric Acid in COLA drinks give them their distinct tangy flavor. Yeah, it's the phosphoric acid in Cola that neutralizes the rust. The foil is a mild abrasive and that helps but it is actually the oxidization of the aluminum that draws the rust off of the more dense chrome finish. When any two metals with atomic weights that differ a lot are given an electrolyte (such as the acid in coke) the heavier metal (by atomic weight, not necessarily density) will lose electrons, and pass them to the lighter weight metal. It essentially begins to de-ionize the heavier metal, making the molecules of the rusted parts (which are not as well adhered to the rest of the metal part) to break free and attach themselves to the aluminum
Thanks to youtuber HAEZE for the info on aluminum foil

the coke is negligible: the best thing to use is salt water. The urban legends are a better story but its the aluminum that is reacting with the rust.....not to much more

The acids in your stomach are far more caustic than coke. All the urban legends about coke eating away at your body is bs. Be more concerned about the amount of sugar in coke than how caustic it is. Funny how vinegar is also an acid used in cooking but nobody says anything about it’s rust removing properties.

The important bit that the drink plays is in the fizzy action. Any fizzy drink will work, the more fizzy the better. He just recommends diet coke here because it doesn't have the sugars, and therefore the sticky residue afterwards

The aluminum reacts with the rust (iron thermite reaction). Salt water works best but regular water would work just as well as the coke, with the examples you demonstrated. Rubbing hard doesn't really assist in the goal: just wipe it back and forth. The aluminum is actually filling in the imperfections, via the reaction, giving that great cleaning looking finish.

While the abrasion of the aluminum foil does help, it is actually the oxidization of the aluminum that draws the rust off of the more dense nickel finish. The same effect that makes a battery supply power is causing this effect. When any two metals with atomic weights that differ a lot are given an electrolyte (such as the acid in coke) the heavier metal (by atomic weight, not necessarily density) will lose electrons, and pass them to the lighter weight metal. It essentially begins to de-ionize the heavier metal, making the mollecules of the rusted parts (which are not as well adhered to the rest of the metal part) to break free and attach themselves to the aluminum. Yay Science !

I know that the Phosphoric Acid in the coke chemically reacts with the rust (Fe2O3) and changes it to ferric phosphate (FePO4), essentially stopping it and neutralizing it. But I didn't know about the Chemical reactions going on in the Aluminum Foil. Thanks for the lesson.

Actually, water will work just fine. This works because rust is basically a product of oxidized metal or metal that has taken on extra oxygen atoms. As heat is generated by the friction of rubbing the aluminum foil on the chrome, a portion of the aluminum will oxidize to produce aluminum oxide. Aluminum has a higher reduction potential (i.e a tendency take on electrons and in the process reduce or break itself down) than the chrome, and will therefore leech oxygen atoms away from any rust on the chrome surface which changes the chemical properties of the rust and breaks it down.

The phosphoric acid converts rust. It is the number one ingredient in commercial rust removers and also the thing that gives cola it's tangy flavor. I have tried water and it doesn't do anything compared to cola. The cola also neutralizes the rust in the small pours so it takes longer to come back.

Interesting. It works similar to steel wool only that it's the crinkled foil. As you said, being relatively soft, it doesn't scratch. If you're going to try to spray the soft drink, flat pop (no more soda) is what you'll want for a solid fluid. I used it on some rusty, chromed tailpipe extensions, and it did a nice job. The rust was so bad that it destroyed the foil pretty quickly, but this happens with everything. An eyesore that's now done in about 15 minutes. Using diet pop is a good suggestion also.

the foil causes a molecular chain reaction which helps break down the rust when combined with lemon juice or other citric acids.. citric acid is found in soda and that is why this works so well . the soda is also great for ruining human teeth and digestive systems.. using colas for restoration and not consumption is not only healthier but also safer for the environment and very economical for the consumer.. why people love to drink so much of it even though there are millions of examples of using it to remove rust and other things is beyond me..

Picking up a chrome late '90s dyno off CL for my daughter. It's in perfect shape except for a little rust. Can't wait to try this. Thanks for the video!

Ty Davis Awesome. Been a while since I've heard someone use the word Dyno in the sense of a BMX bike.

I just bought an old bmx as well. It has rust on the back brake and on the seat stem. I was told to try steel wool with white vinegar but I tried the foil with water alone and it worked. Now I will try each method and see which works quickest!

The phosphoric acid in cola is the only method that also neutralizes rust and prevents it from reoccurring.

Sometimes I see a video and think 'mehhhh'....Sometimes I see a video and think 'wellll maybe'..and sometimes like this video I think 'this is EXACTLY what I am looking for'...My fathers old 1978 chrysler 2l which has been garaged for 30+ years has rusty pitting on the front bumper - but not TOO bad - and I was thinking of getting it rechromed..I think this is going to save me a lot of money...respect!!! and thanks for posting..I can't wait to try it tomorrow :)
