Just wanted to say thank you for your awesome lessons. I'm not in the same state so I'm thinking of trying to start a side hustle doing headlights in my area. I'm going to do a few peoples headlights first to get some more experience but the first customer was myself. I don't have all the tools you have but some at hand already from other projects. I didn't have p500 but did have p400 and p600. Went ahead and sanded it down with the p400 and got what I thought was good enough, white powder, and then moved on to p600 and p800. I noticed leaving drill on over some spots too long, the plastic dust started melting and solidifying. I had to go down to a lower grit hand sanding to even get it off as the p400 was taking too slow. Lightly sanding it down, I was able to redo it better and not have the melted globs as much. After the p3000, wow! so much clearer and no more yellowing. Cleaned with the Mcguires cleaner and then 3m polish after. The finisher McGuire Clear coat was BLAM! Clear like...Clear! My lenses were too damaged from the sun, spider cracks were pretty deep. When I used the blower, the water was traveling along the cracks as it dried up. At any case, neighbor and housemate were pretty amazed. One neighbor rolled up and saw what I was doing. Sitting in his car still, he could see the big difference from his angle. They're pretty excited for me to work on their headlights soon. It's been a week and still good as clear. I've watched a few other videos by others and majority of them are going through almost each and every grit size. All of them say to wet sand. I took longer than an hour for both lights, but that was because of the excess I took off and juggling the pads and inspecting after each step. If I had gone through each grit size, I can see it becoming a 2 hour job, especially hand sanding. Again, amazing tutorials!

Great video, especially after just running into this on a job. I pretty much did all the same steps, except didn't think of using a knife. That's a great idea for next time. Yea I created some of those problems for myself, but I figured them out and worked it out and finally got all that damn 2K off, and they were super clear once getting through all the steps. Like I said, i did things just like you just showed in this video. I have not seen this instruction anywhere, so thanks so much for the insight and instruction. Makes me feel like I was on the right track to fixing someone else's F up with that 2K !! LOL I kind of did the same process as you starting out. Practiced on as many as I could, even worked on some of those cheap ass aftermarket ones that went bad. They for sure aren't as durable or well made as the factory originals, but they turned out great in the end. There was no 2K on those, just got hazy over time. I would think if someone used 2k on an aftermarket one, they would get damaged so much easier trying to remove it, after seeing the difference between factory and OEM. I also did quite a few before ever doing one as a paying job. I just chalked it up to my education and sort of paying my dues to learn best practices. Anyway thanks for the great instruction and info. Looking forward to more from you to further my education to become a JUNIOR Headlight Restoration Pro, haha. Thanks !!

Just awesome as always!! Dispite those problem areas from previous 2k clearcoat!! You mentioned how cold it was doing this restoration, My Question is there a recommended minimum working temperature?? As I live in the UK November cold and damp!! Perhaps it would be better to leave until the spring as I have concerns regarding the Meguiars clearcoat with added UV protection drying and curing times!! As I use my car daily! Your reply would be much appreciated 🤔🇬🇧👍
@theheadlightrestorationpro

There is no minimum temperature but some are better than others... I probably would do it in anything under 30° the cold does slow down the drying time a little and the curing time as well.. But not a huge deal... For aftercare info this video is amazing.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oa-lpZeJ3b_OdJ8.html

It's a very easy question to someone with your experience in headlight restoration. Is it recommended to sand light scratches (good condition headlights)with higher grit of sandpaper and then use Meguiars Headlight Coating or using wax? That's it, nothing special about my question.

I have a milwaukee do you recommend getting a ryobi just for the headlights or should I just not trigger it all the way down ?
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
Not holding the trigger all the way down will help you with the RPMs but the RPMs aren't so much the issue it's more of the torque of the device.. just double check and make sure your torque isn't over 600 lb... That's what really eats up the headlight is the torque... Other than that if it is 600 or less you can just try not to hold the trigger all the way down but it's tricky sometimes you got to think of all to get all these different directions....

I know you use the meguires clear coat on the finished lens. Is it possible to use a Meguires Paste wax instead?
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
Not efficiently... Not by itself... Wouldn't work quite correctly even if you wanted to wax it every week... It needs to be sealed, the poorest environment will constantly just dry out... Also your clarity would not be there as far as visually and also as light expenditure,... It's not really advised... You must protect the lights that doesn't quite qualify as protection on its own it's more like a protection additive...

When someone asks you to do their lights and they are barely oxidized, what grit do you start with then? I did one yesterday and just did 1500 and 3000. What are your thoughts?
@theheadlightrestorationpro
@theheadlightrestorationpro Жыл бұрын
Whether they're barely oxidized or not... I use the same process most of the times.. you don't want to get in the habit of doing that because you're not removing enough of material.. you're pretty much spot fixing.. when you spot fix you're moving a little bit of the area that is damaged but you got to understand that the damage area was placed there at the same time as the non-damage area you have to be really aware of what you're doing because it doesn't work on all lights because that damage area which is the same as the non damage area far as the time it was applied.. therefore the good areas just haven't gone bad yet and by clear coating over them you're going to have clear coat that goes bad underneath your good clear coat way earlier and way premature... Best rule of thumb is to run the same process.. cuz when you spot fix you're going to have uneven wearing.. that light will go bad a lot faster than it was supposed to..
