Cole I have a suggestion for you. I have been doing reno work for a good part of my 61 years. With you being relatively young you should consider framing the exterior basement walls and have closed cell foam insulation sprayed in. It will certainly pay for itself in heating costs. I have it in my house from the basement right up including the second floor. House is cheap to heat! Three years ago we had my son's house done as well. They had the attic done and they have a very cheap heat bill. There are a few tricks for making a warm basement floor as well that is not very expensive. It depends how much room you need at this point. Hopefully you will be blessed with a large family and will need the room.
@TT-ik3kd

He should probably do the upstairs first he has like 5 bedrooms up there 😂 plus needs to fix water issues, electrical, plumbing, hvac, boiler shit, before he even thinks about finishing the basement. He’d be better off spending more of that $$$ on insulation upstairs, in the attic, on new windows, which is significantly more energy loss than basement walls.
@davebrittain9216

@@TT-ik3kd Yes quite possibly with a house that age but statistically the most heat loss in a home is through the basement.

Cole, I really appreciate how you are paying attention to cleaning up the old infrastructure but most especially the electrical. I grew up in an old house and my father was always clear that we must pay attention to electrical smells. Years later (we were gone) the old house burned to the ground. The wiring.

Don't take out the Trane forced air heater. Once the basement gets finished you'll want to spend time down there and the heat will be appreciated, plus it can hear the floors above. Redirect some of that heat to the first level.

It's way more effort trying to get freezing dirt to fit back in. You end up with cavities down there and the soil sinks back down in the summer and you have to go back out and deal with grass again, it's less work just to keep it granulated.

I love that beaded board ceiling. Try and use it some where else. I would do drop ceiling so it insulates and can still be worked on if needed to. Depending on the amount of emergency exits don’t close up windows. Those pink foam boards work well in my parents in my parents cabin basement and maintains the temp year round. You could put in heated floors to keep it warm down there.

If I were you I'd run a whole new electrical panel and wiring through the house. Keep old things on the old system but as you add new things put them on the new box. Then one day pull the meter and just move the service entry wires to the new panel. Would be less risk if there's a lot of shady wiring going on in the old system than replacing things one by one on the old system.

If you put glass block in the room where the windows are under the porch that would seal that area but still let light in. I should have put in my original post, when the high school by us put in a baseball field and sprinklers in their field, my house was one of the last six that were closest to the field and we all got mice. The neighbor contacted a glass block company because we had your type of windows. Once the new windows were in we never had a mouse problem again.

@moosedogdad
@moosedogdad Жыл бұрын
@@kimberlyvarvorines4933 My comment was meant to be more general, not pointed at you. Sorry. I grew up in a home in North Dakota built in 1961. Basement just had 3 tiny opening windows above grade that only kids could get through. Not safe. "Most" modern codes require 2 exits from any room. Generally in a basement it would be the door to the room and a minimum defined exit window size. Where Cole was pointing out that window, it was it's own room so an opening window should stay. If you watch remodel shows, if a basement window is too small, they will enlarge to meet current codes. Or add one if it doesn't exist where required. I visited my childhood home a few years ago and the new owner had to replace all the small basement windows with larger ones and add a window well, including the fixed glass block ones. Different areas do have different requirements, If you ever watch a Mike Holmes show, he often points out that minimum code requirements are often deficient to good practice. Don't know why I got out the original soap box but I'll get off before I fall and break something.

@@moosedogdad I watch all those shows and you do have to have egress windows if its used as living space. You can get windows that are similar to glass block but can be opened. I didn't take offense but I'm sure it will be helpful to others👍
