A simple, fast, no-power-tool method of removing a tyre from a steel wheel. This will most likely damage the steel rim, so only really suitable for rims that are to be scrapped.

Best tutorial i ever saw on cutting tire out of rims

I've been scrapping for years, now full time for 4 years, this guys awesome because he looks outside the square. Awesome, well done mate.

its 10 times easier if you break the bead first (using the 4x4 + vehicle method or car jack+ tiedown method)before you cut the tire

the valves are dirty brass for scrapping. spray a little soapy water where you are hammering. It will get between the rubber and steel and really start the tire moving while you hammer

very helpful. I just removed one tire, and I have one more to go. thanks for posting!

Love the video. I do not have a sharp knife so use sawsall instead. Also cut 6" rubber down to rin. used grinder to cut thru steel band! thanks again. Also tied up the rubber and put in a garbage bag

This is especially pertinent for old brittle tyres that are hard to get off the rim.

great idea works well

It's much faster to use an angle grinder with a thin cutting disc, and cut fully through both sides at one end of the tire. The steel wires inside the tire are hardened and will spoil the teeth of your hacksaw blade. If the rim is aluminium you can continue cutting through the entire rim itself, and the two halves will fit perfectly into the crucible in your melting furnace. The alloy used for rims is very good for casting items at home. The rubber tire can be cut in halves or quarters, and together with the tube, if any inside, be used as raw material for your pyrolysis unit, giving you free diesel or gasoline for your car; or mixed together they become perfect fuel for the melting furnace. The gas created during the pyrolysis process can be collected in a water tank to be used for heating/melting as well.Rubber tires contain 40% solid residue. Nearly half of this is steel wires that can be sold as scrap iron. The remaining part is mostly carbon black, which after pyrolysis process can be mixed with saw dust and pressed into hard pellets for use in a coal fired furnace. Never use it for barbecue! It must be incinerated in a closed furnace chamber, with an air blower connected, at high temperature in order to fully combust any remaining poisonous chemicals. The ash is hazardous waste.

this was very helpful, especially for those like me who have no power tool accesses. thank you!

You don't wanna ruin a salsaw blade but you're happy to ruin your wives boning knife LMAO

LOL, only cutting through rubber with the knife, but fair call for sure. I have some $5 bait knives that I use in the workshop, probably more suitable for this kind of abuse!

I was going to use the steel wheel for an extra water hose holder.

How much do you make off of steel wheels?
@successfulengineer5 жыл бұрын
Bugger all, I think the plan back then was mainly to do with being able to get rid of the wheels. It costs a few dollars to 'dump' a wheel with tire on around here.

I love scrap But I only take aluminium rims this is too much time for little

100% agree, this was more of an experiment. Normally I wouldn't bother.

10 minutes of video for "cut tire off". Wow.
@AX-xi2pw6 жыл бұрын
After watching the video, I don't understand why you cut off the tread first.. You could just cut a slit thru the whole tire and do the hammering bit in the end. Also once the bead is loosened you don't have to saw it off. At that point it's easy to pry the tire off the wheel if you use two tire irons or crowbars instead of one. Just work your way around the wheel. The problem I have is that the bead is on there so tight hammering won't help.
@successfulengineer6 жыл бұрын
This was some time ago, can't remember if I ever tried getting the bead over the rim, if I ever need to again, I will certainly try with a couple of crowbars! I have seen some videos where guys break the bead by sliding the wheel under a 4wd on it's side, then using a scissor jack to 'jack' the car up with the base of the jack sitting on the bead. Something along those lines might be workable?
@AX-xi2pw6 жыл бұрын
Yea I've tried a few methods using cars and jacks to break my beads lol. I can't seem to make it happen. Thanks for the tip tho! I do have a dremel. Maybe I can cut the bead off using that?

Soap, water, your car’s brake rotor....Somehow, I doubt a quality tire’s bead will break off with just hammering...

What a load of faff! If you are recovering steel wheels, just get a Harbor Freight tyre machine, and get on with it.

Sawzall mate, a lot faster.
@successfulengineer5 жыл бұрын
For sure! I think I looked at it at the time and the biggest problem with the sawzall was the cost of the replacement blades. But would certainly be much faster!
