Thank you... houses always hidden expense.. if the artex is on plaster then it will be easier to remove... once through the painted surface water will soak into the artex..

@@PaintingandDecorating Thanks, turns out the they Artexed straight onto the boards (noticed this when I removed an old ceiling mounted fire alarm). I'm guessing I should learn how to skim it, ort wait a year or two until we have money to get it skimmed.

Should pay for the boiler on monthly payments rather than all at once if you’re tight on cash. Can get decent financing at 0%

Thanks, the scraper that I used was just right really have used some of these angled scrapers with large handles and they tend to dig in at times and can make more damage. Scraping is never easy especially on ceilings.

best way first is to start stripping and see how well the adhesive is stuck hopefully if the ceiling was not sealed well it should come off easily. Take it from there.

then maybe warm water also give it a go with steam stripper. Then if that does not work see if there is a solution on the market to work up the adhesive.

Have heard of it from some research that I've been doing will possibly try some if asked to strip anymore artex. The problem with this ceiling there was loose artex on in places and it was badly applied also the plasterboard was moving in corners and along joints. So just to skim over was not an option at first.

We discovered the Artex was straight onto the plasterboard. Which was loose so we had to leave it and just secured the plasterboard. then just flatered off the Artex and but some insulation paper over it.

But don't forget that the Artex will have been painted, so you're not applying a skim coat direct to Artex but to paint! So you must at least remove the paint.

It doesn't work when you start to plaster after using the PVA the Artex will start to drop off. Believe me I've tried it. X-tex is the best product I've used to get rid of Artex.

Marcus Chambers sorry Yes very small amount of white asbestos but always wear a suitable mask and wet removal mid 1980 they stopped adding asbestos. Should have checked will add a note about safety when we learnt at college there was no mention of this.

I do know this Artex has not been on long.

No worries mate, we were taught anything pre 2000 assume that there could be asbestos. Don't envy what you are doing, messy and hard work.

Marcus Chambers Yes not easy especially when it's been applied straight to plaster board. So we decided to just smooth ready to line and paper. Will make sure I double check. My uncle died from asbestosis working for the council cutting pipe insulation.

Painting and Decorating sorry to hear about your uncle, the thing is symptoms don't usually surface for sometimes 25 years after exposure. It's quite alarming how many things used to contain asbestos, you would probably be surprised. The worst thing about it is because it's heat proof, acid and alkaline proof, once it's in your body it won't be broken down. I have done a fair amount of training in asbestos and site safety and I would recommend it, quite an eye opener and although you are a sole trader you too have safety requirements. Back in the day it was drink some milk to reduce the harmful effects of lead paint fumes! Could the ceiling maybe have been overboarded as I noticed there was no coving/cornice to contend with. I know it might have been a bit more work but better than have you and your brother having to strip it?

You think it would be on the news that people have asbestos in their homes.. may be you need to flag it up with officials..
