In this episode I describe and demonstrate the removal of 1960s red marker ink from a silver age fantastic four 48. Classic The King and The Man goodness (Jack King Kirbny and Stand The Man Lee) including the first appearance of silver surfer and also galactus. I also talk about other pressing issues for a while and I'll include time markers on the description if I can figure out how to do that! (help me if you know how!)

Great idea of the "tests" Stuff that if something happens it's not a huge financial hit.

Great idea with the test-books ^^ I got myself some nice ones from my LCS - but most of the time it's not so easy to get some that really need some work - because they already throw most of them out I guess ^^ Btw I used your advice (and a mini iron) to remove some price stickers from a the maxx collection I bought online - worked like a charm

HI Florian, You're right I think it can be surprisingly difficult to find especially "needy" books because either people don't bring them to an LCS int he first place or the LCS does buy them. Sometime you get lucky and they are int eh 25 cent bins but whats really needed are low grade copies of books that would be more valuable so you can get used to cleaning the same inks, paper, staples, etc

@@binkysphinx I like your style Trent! One problem I have yet to solve is that training others has, so far, not gone as well as I would have hoped. I find that most people improve rapidly to a limited point. Afterwards, even with months of training and experience, they tend to improve only very very slowly and sometimes not at all. I don't know what the solution to that problem is, honestly. I'm trying to capture what I do in great detail to share it but somehow it doesn't transfer??? I just don't get it and it's frustrating as a teacher.

@@ImmaculateComics It definitely transfers, Rick, it's just a process, with definite plateaus to learning. The basics, such as dry cleaning, wet cleaning and pressing, form the foundation. Advancement requires tackling challenges like removing marker, water stains, foxing, spine rolls, rusty staples, etc., for which we definitely need books to practice on. I'm totally down for buying some (or learning how to create them), instead of using some of my own valuable books as pawns ;). An LCS only has so many of these books available. This area of expertise could certainly benefit from an actual course, with individual training modules.

I would be down for a half dozen magazine size boards, The ink came off better than I expected. I think the last sharpie ink I worked on I stopped after about three hours and while it was very much faded it could still be seen.

Hi Jim, that's often the case with me too. I find that the first 80% of the ink is remove in the fist 20% of the time. Its a long haul after than and and I will often just give up!

Thanks for the kind words. I have started and stopped a foxing video so many times but I always appears it is going to be about 2 hours long. Its such a complicated and delicate process that I get distracted by other things and then stop to start again later. It is, however, on my list as always!

I was going to purchase some of your products but the cost of shipping was so high. I was wanting to get a few items for test purposes. Why is the cost of shipping so high?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David and thanks for writing. I’ll offer you the same answer as I did previously. We do not control the shipping costs. They are calculated upon checkout by both USPS and UPS upon and they get that money directly. We actually lose money on shipping, particularly on chemicals which are difficult to pack and ship. You’ll have to redirect your question to the shipping services for an answer about shipping costs. Some of our shipping costs are free, some are $3.95, an some are of course higher. Particularly for larger or heavier items. Unfortunately not much has changed since the last time you asked about the shipping costs.

@@ImmaculateComics Thank you for your reply. I’m getting close to retirement and I’m trying to save as much money as I can. I just barely made it through covidI and I hope thought I might try to clean some of my old comics. Sorry I asked you about the shipping. I hope I didn’t insult you with the shipping question. I enjoy your videos and I am learning a lot. Thanks you for your help.

I appreciate all questions David, I just come off in a matter of fact time sometimes because Im a teacher and that’s just how I explain things. I don’t like shipping prices either but they aren’t one of the knobs I get to turn, unfortunately. Hang in there my friend

@@davidyoungblood7887 The default shipping cost is overnight. You have to change it. When I first made a purchase, the shipping was $55+, but then I noticed there are options.

What if it’s on the pages inside? Eg. someone actually stamped their name on the 1st page in their youth I suppose. Would the process be the same?

You have to be lucky and patient. Some ink comes off and others don’t. I often put solvent on it and the try to press is off by transferring to a sheet of paper

Hey Rick great content! I bought your immacuClean kit and using the 3.5% solution and DI water to clean some of my dirty books. After practicing on some books, I figured out the light rubbing/wiping requires several applications but eventually dirt comes off. Requires lots of patience 😰. Couple of questions: 1)I tried it to remove some sticker residue but I ended up rubbing too much. Any suggestions? 2)I tried it on foxing but it didn't help. Hoping you can shoot me a link to some foxing cleaning videos.

Hi Remz, Immacuclean is no good for about 50% of adhesives and not at all good for foxing. Try toluene or pet ether for the adhesive. Try peroxide on the foxing but be *very* careful as it will embrittle the paper
