I just set any green poplar in the sun for a couple of hours in the summer and maybe a day or two in the winter, and it turns any green into a light brown. Makes “ugly” poplar look as good as other desirable hardwoods.

Yes, I have been doing that for many years. Discovered by accident when I once left a poplar board outside my shop. Next tried setting out a poplar chest, which was originally destined for paint, but after a few days in the sun it was such a gorgeous light toasty brown, that I just put some oil on it. Now I use poplar often in projects when I want a light brown natural color.

Finished a bunch of poplar boards in tung oil this week for a bookshelf. The darker tone it takes as it cures combines with any green/yellow and gives a pleasant brown. There's still a very stark difference between the heartwood and the sapwood, and the tung oil only accentuates that even more, but personally I like it. If all I wanted was strength and uniformity, I'd make everything out of MDF, after all :P

I thought the green was unique and I actually like it and it is the reason I chose it as a top wood cap for a solid body guitar. This wood can have a really cool deep pattern grain to it and I gravitated toward it when choosing it. I chose the back to be Douglas Fir due to its acoustic advantages. I know both are soft woods but on the body it is not bad to use softer woods. The grain will make a very nice guitar body and I am considering leaving the natural wood of the poplar cap to show it off and just clearing over with lacquer. Its a very underrated wood.

Acturally poplar is a hardwood. But it is one of the softest of hardwoods. But it has the cell structure of a hardwood giving it a nice appearance with super tight grains and cell structures

Agree about the colour. I hunt through the lumber to find the greenest pieces. Very striking for small projects. (Because it's tough to get big pieces that are all green.)

I really love it when I find a piece with some purple in it. Some of my most interesting pieces are made with colorful poplar.

If you keep your eye peeled you can find some really intriguing pieces - green, brown, purple, red, sometimes streaks of all of them inter-layered. From where I'm standing it's really what "poplar" (which is actually Liriodendron) is for.

omg! 1. hit it with a damp cloth, 2. allow to dry, 2A: light sand with 180 grit or whatever, ? 3. blow off, 4. wipe with damp cloth, 4A: allow to dry, 5.light sand 220 grit, 6. blow off. 7. wipe with almost dried cloth, 7A. allow to dry, 8. tactilely ( touch it) reference progress. 9. if you don't feel hairs ---> proceed with finish (if you do feel hairs, repeat appropriate steps PRN -[as necessary]) *the entire process takes less than 5 minutes (...if you are new to wood working, maybe longer->5.25 minutes)

If I want to minimize the amount of water used in the rinsing step, could I use a baking soda + water mixture (to neutralize the acid) and apply it with a sponge?

So I’m very very new to woodworking. I’m in the middle of building a bar for my boat dock. I used poplar simply bc I’m ignorant. It was at Lowe’s and looked pretty straight to work with. I’m guessing I can’t do this with everything assembled due to the hardware?

I’m building a 10 ft tabletop with poplar. There is definitely lots of green in the lumber. Should I treat the lumber with the acid before my glue up or after? I’m thinking that the sanding that is required after the glue up will remove the lightened surface that was achieved with the acid.

I purchased a few boards of poplar a year ago but didn't use them. They originally had a lot of green in them, but after a year of sitting in my garage, all that green turned into a nice dark brown color without any orange. So I'm thinking that it might be a decent choice if you can leave it unfinished for a while.

Nice discovery! I recently learned that the color behavior of poplar can be dependent upon where the poplar was grown. I assume that has more to do with the exact species. I can say that in southeast, the poplar I've had in the shop for the last 3-4 years....still green....ugly green.....now where did I put that oxalic acid...

Would this work on a kitchen cabinet? My kitchen cabinets were all hand made, but 1 of them is very yellow... the rest have beautiful shades of the poplar wood coming through.

If the cabinets have a finish on them, it would need to be stripped off before doing this. Just keep in mind, that this won't necessarily make them all look uniform. However, this acid treatment doesn't penetrate deeply so you can always sand pieces to get them more uniform in color.

The GRAIN of tulip poplar is actually very similar to black cherry. All that's needed is a dye or stain or combination of both or glaze to match the color of cherry.

Try using a Amber stain then 3 coats of clear it looks realy good. Your welcome

You’re correct. Red neutralizes green. Much simpler to just use color theory

Can you rinse it with something other than water so the grain doesn't rise? Could you use alcohaul or paint thinner ?

I've never tried anything other than water but I wouldn't recommend alcohol or any solvent mainly due to cost. It takes a lot to wash all of this away. I think you'd spend less time with a light sanding than trying to deal with something other than water.

Can I cover the green with just stain instead of going through the point of using acid ? live in an apt no house to go and spray and wash :(

Yes, you can use a stain instead of acid. Darker stains will do a much better job of masking the green. A stain with a red hue will probably also offset the green more than a stain with a brown hue. You just have to experiment on scraps to get a color that you like. I would also recommend trying a dye instead of a stain.

It's getting harder to find. A local woodworking supply store *might* have it. If not, you can order it from Amazon or Rockler. The brand used here is Rainbow.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I wouldn't expect it to dye evenly. You might want to put a sanding sealer on it first and then try dying it - much like you would treat maple when staining or dying.

I think it’s strange that people actually want to remove the greenish hue. That is such an important part of what gives the wood it’s character, and you wish to dull it down to normalcy?! A true head-scratcher of a video

I find it unnecessary if you adequately rinse the acid solution. I rinse with a lot of water repeatedly. There is certainly no harm in neutralizing. BTW, Borax is the neutralizer to use - cheap and easily available.

I don't know why poplar is called "ugly" it's way more customizable than other woods. No 2 cuts of poplar look the same. Oak looks like oak no matter what you do, but with poplar, the style and customization are endless

****** If you use a HDX garden sprayer for this project, the HDX sprayer becomes a single use/one time only use & purchase. ++Unless you flood the ENTIRE sprayer inside and out, and the piston with water for 30 minutes, while pumping... twice!++ Otherwise, the sprayer becomes a single use item. THEN RINSE THE ENTIRETY WITH WATER, 10-20 MINUTES***** OR SPEND $4 MORE AND GET A SPRAYER DESIGNED FOR CHEMICALS -OR SPRAY BOTTLE DESIGNED FOR CHEMICALS.
