There are certain repair and regulation tasks that require you to remove the action and the keys from the grand piano keyframe. This is a simple process which we demonstrate in this video. If you're going to be replacing the piano keytops or felts that are under the keys, this requires the keys to come off.

I don't repair pianos or anything. But your channel is helping me understand my instrument better. I kinda regret buying my piano now, as under closer inspection it wasn't as good quality as I thought. Thank you very much for making these videos!

Always great info, Howard. I just took out a key in my Mason & Hamlin BB and put graphite powder on the pin. Did the trick!

howardpianoind I just started tuning pianos after struggling with other ventures in music and your videos have been extremely helpful. I've been starting off small and slowly getting bigger with my tool collection. Soon I will have enough to get the certification which is a little pricy. I've learned a lot from you in the mean time along with the great Piano Technician book by Arthur Reblitz. If there is any advice you could give me, that would be awesome! You have a very great website and I'm sure you will be hearing from me frequently through this venture. Happy Holidays!

Awesome video and very helpful! Are there any recommendations for keys that are clunky when you let go and the hammer returns to rest?

I have an extra piece of wood over the top of the keys held down by an unusal screw! Its a Challen baby grand. I have ordered the replacement key tops from you but now I am worried I won't be able to take this off to lift the keys up. Any ideas? I have a picture I could send.

This wood rail should come off. The screw is probably down in a recessed area that you'll have to use a narrow blade screwdriver to remove so you can take the rail off.

But how do you remove the KEYS / keyboard tray from an arcosonic upright?

what would you do if the keys are stuck at the pin and doesnt wanna come out? i think the pins on my piano is corroded and the pin got stuck.

You may need to pry the key up off of the pin.

It's usually fairly tight because it has a spring on one side of the action that holds it firmly in place. Usually you have to go in at a slight angle. If you have the left side going in a little ahead of the right side this works well.
