It’s this kind of thing that gets us train guys into the miniature hobby. I’ve done mostly model trains since I was little & ive thought abt making a railroad like this later on w a dsl/hydraulic drive steamer body or w a dsl body. I kinda wonna get a non running steamer, throw a dsl w pump in the tender or have the dsl motor in the engine w the hydraulic motor under the dsl engine w dsl tank in the tender might be too complicated & why guys end up building a diesel style engine w either gas or diesel powered. If I did one I’d probably do Diesel just cuz it’s way cheaper to get parts/way easier to build stuff/wheels. A dsl needs 4 wheels a steamer needs 4-6for the tender depending on what you’re going for. Then another 8-12 some drivers some not.

I rode the Junction Valley 2x in Michigan in 1986, and its very special because the track guage is 14&1/8th inch that is Precisely Quarter Scale. And only a few are at this Quarter scale at 3"=1'. But most everyone else uses the 15" guage at amusement parks. Or narrow guage for 3 footers like DRGW. AND recently I found out about a large cache of 12 lb. rail. But the seller want to sell it entirely as a group.

5' lengths are scale for the gauge.;-) Much of mine is in 20' lengths which is great for curves as there are less joints to worry about.

@MillBrookRailroad

It really depends what you're putting on it. I don't know how heavy 15" gauge equipment is, so I really can't give you a good answer. As for places to get it, Railroad Supply Corp. Comes to mind. Look up their phone number on their website, call around 7PM eastern and Mike can tell you what you need for rail and where to get it. Even if he doesn't sell it. www.railroadsupply.com/

Did this railroad use steam locomotives or electric? Also is the rail actually free or do you have to pay for them?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 3 жыл бұрын
He used to build locomotives there, so mainly gas hydraulic and battery electric but steam would visit regularly. He used to haul 5000 passengers in a weekend. The rail was free for the taking. He was closing the sale of his house the next day and had to get it out of there. The neighbors weren't so happy about it going away but I assured them it would be going to a good home.

will you be able to have the opportunity to come back for the remaining rails? That was a great find, there is nothing worse then useable items such as the rail to be used over being scraped, the co. I work for has so MUCH WASTE ! they do not sell or donate it, just toss it into the dumpster. I saw the other day about 25-30 decorative fluorescent light fixtures tossed into the metal dumpster. probably thousands of dollars worth of products.so sad. in the past they gave passes so some items they would allow to go to employees.
