While they look Philips, they are NOT. They are JIS screws which are way different. You can get bits and screwdrivers for them online. You might still need an impact tool, but for Japanese cars they very likely used JIS (Japanese industry standard), it's a good idea to get a set if you're working on a Japanese car.

These (and other cross head) screws are not "Phillips type" but JIS. There's a Vessel Impacta brand JIS (size 3) driver that is ideal. It has a built in impact driver mechanism.

I bought a impact screwdriver at Harbor Freight for only $9.00 works great and 2 x 8mm bolts at Home Depot for less than $2.00 Excellent Video. Great video explaining the concept of using an impact driver. However, the head of that is not a Phillips # 3, Honda uses JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws on the rotors. It is different design than Phillips and that is why these screws strip when Phillips heads are used. Buy the Vessel impact screw driver with the # 3 head. It is an JIS impact screwdriver with a 12 degree cam. Use the proper tool the same way as an impact. It will be removed without any damage since the proper fitting tool is used.

Thanks for the great tip on the 8mm bolts to pull the rotors. Mine were stuck. PB Blaster and impact driver (old school manual kind from HFT ~ $9) did the trick on the two Phillips screws. PB Blaster and a bunch of whacks with a ball peen hammer would not loosen the rotor. A trip to HD and $1.76 later ( .82 each) and I was all set. Rotor came off in less that 45 seconds once I started alternating cranking the bolts with my ratchet. 2008 Honda Pilot was shown today who is boss!! Thanks!!

I couldn’t get the screws out of the rear rotors on my 2008 Accord. I bought an Impact driver from O’Reilly for $13.01.(included tax) At first I thought it was not working by holding firm and giving repeated blows it worked. Well worth the money. Plus you can use it on any hard to remove screws.

Tried using one of these on those stupid screws on my dad's Accord, after two broken bits and a couple stripped screws I just drilled the damn things out instead. Was faster to drill them and the cobalt drill bits were cheaper too. So glad that my Lexus doesn't have these screws on it's rotors.

As far as the extraction screws to get the rotor off. On rear rotors, they usually also contain a "drum" built into the rotor for the parking brake. If the brake shoes for the parking brake are adjusted too tight, the rotor extraction bolts can actually bend the brake hardware and mess things up. Same with just banging the rotor off. I learned the hard way. : )

I have a noise on 2013 rear brakes Honda civic. The funny thing is it makes a scraping sound every time the tire rotates one time around. But if I loosen the wheel nuts it goes away. If I tighten the wheel nuts, again, I hear a scraping noise every time the tire rotates one time. It is also makes the sound on both sides in the rear. What the hell can it be? I don't think its the brake pads because they would squeak as I turn the tire all the time, not just one time around. Weird stuff.

A kit like this, can be used with that Craftsman impact: www.vesseltools.com/handtools/screwdrivers/impact/431801-detail ... it's the P3 (JIS) tip you want. A Phillips tip can work "for a awhile" (maybe) but it'll eventually get ruined in one of these JIS screws. Vessel and others also make a dedicated #3 JIS impact screwdriver if you don't have/don't want a separate impact tool and bits.
