Removing Shock Towers on a 67 Mustang - TCI Install Part 2 - Ep. 13

The 67 Mustang build and TCI Engineering Suspension install continues. On this episode we pass the point of no return and cut out the shock towers on the AutoXandTrack Road Race 1967 Mustang. For those considering removing their shock towers you can see whats involved and we share some tips and tricks learned in the process.

I did it on a 67 fastback and installed 07 drivetrain. 5.4 supercharged 6sp trans. Also installed the rear torque arm setup too. Fast car and gets high 20s for fuel mileage

Right!?! They did a lot of good work and part of me get bad cutting it out. But also, it no kidding took at least twice as long to remove everything. Definitely wish I started with a non race car at this point. Would of been a lot cheaper since I’m cutting off everything I paid for and a lot faster.

Good stuff Chad. Question: Through this Part 2 episode, how much time have you spent on this part of the project?

Here is a summary based on working about 8 hour days on the car and mostly solo but getting a second pair of hands from time to time. The car is located over an hour away so I can't work on it more than about 8 hours in a given day. 1 day to trailer the car to the shop and pull the engine and trans. 1 day to pull the old suspension front and rear. And about 1.5 days to cut out the shock towers and prep the frame rails (I didn't show the grinding or frame rail prep). That includes prepping the rear part of the frame rails for the subframe connectors and cross member. On a stock Mustang you could easily cut the shock towers, remove the strut braces and prep the frame rails in 1 day or less. All of the extra stitch welds and reinforcement plates more than doubled the removal and clean up time for me. Also, without all the extra welding and plates the job is very doable with just an angle grinder.

Actually your car is much much easier. You don’t have to cut out the shock towers like this. Your car uses a bolt in subframe. TCI makes one for your car and it would be much easier to install than the early Ford stuff.

The kit is a fair amount of work to install but opens up a lot of possibilities with engine fitment and bigger front tires. I like it so far. But I’m mostly looking forward to using it on track.

Doing well all things considered. But the car stuff has nearly ground to a halt. No racing and I can’t work on the Mustang 😬. Looking forward to working on the car again soon and more importantly driving it one of these days!

That's not blasphemy if you're doing a cross it's almost necessary those shock towers are made of weak weak metal. They always try those Monte Carlo bars to fix it but I believe tubes is a win and you can always switch back it's not that big of a deal
