Interesting experiment. I suspect it was the speed and direction of the water. It pushed the stain, and pulled/siphoned the tanning elements that cause tan lines, away from and off the book. The water that creeped up did so very slowly and did not pull any tanning elements with it. That is my hypothesis at least. I also suspect that you would not try keeping the cover on a book if the stain was near the spine versus near an edge because so many interior pages would get wet in the "washing machine."

so Rick, did you just let it air dry without compressing the cover pages in any way so that they wouldn’t shrink? or was the moisturized area small enough that you just let the covers air dry without any concern of paper shrinkage?

Wow. I can think of many of my books that was in a box that got wet. That could be a solution. There only stained on the bottom.

Do you have success with finger prints? They seem to be my bane and so many pressers sort of can't do much about them. Great video, thanks for sharing!
