In this quick video, I share my adventure with a recent new trick for removing tampos from a plastic Hot Wheels car body using of all things, sugar.
This video is not to be considered an instructional video, but one where viewers are taken along during the process of die-cast car restorations and customs for entertainment purposes only. If you are involved in this hobby, be sure to wear proper safety equipment and follow safety procedures.

Figured I'd share it as it doesnt seem to be widely known. I found it works great on plastic cars. With metal cars I strip cars tampos all the way to bare metal. So, it isnt much of a trick for metal bodies for me.

So, basically your sanding the tampos off. But with sugar instead of sandpaper. The major benefit that I can see is that the sugar will get into areas that sandpaper won't. Thank you for the tip. I wonder if you'd get the same results if you put the casting and the sugar into something like a rock polisher or brass casings polisher.

You've mentioned the big bonus. The sugar does reach into the body recesses fantastic and the sugar is softer than sand so it breaks down into finer particles as you go. It really is a great way of removing tampos. Far better than sanding and no need to go out and buy chemicals and the hassles of proper disposal. It works fairly quickly. So, I'm not sure I'd make the effort using a tunbler.

I gave this a try, and it did work, just not as well as I hoped on the body I was working on (some stubborn tampos in a concave area). But I knew I didn't want to use my ELO, so this was worth trying; I may give it another try again later. Thanks~

Thanks for joining me on the journey. Got a few videos in the works now. They are being slowed due to the virus hampering shipping of some build supplies. We just need to be have a little patience as I adjust to the supply chain circumstances. 👍

It works really good. The sugar gets into the nooks and crannies. No risk of melting plastic either. Glad I can share the journey with you.

@@wildbillsworkshop3410 have you tried just removing parts of a tampo and leaving some? If not looks like I'll be the Guinea pig lol

@@DrewsCustomDiecastDrewMSmith You can. A good question and I had the same thought when experimenting. Here is what worked for me. Put masking tape over the area you want to keep and take care rubbing the sugar on the area you want to remove. I imagine the success would be in the design itself and your mileage may vary. Just try not to catch the edge of the tape and pull it up. If you watch the video again you'll see that the top of the tampo is in not worn while the bottom half is. That is from that very experiment. A great question and thanks for bringing it up.

I was looking for a way to remove the tampo from a transparent plastic body, without giving a hazy appearance. Any ideas?

Been doing the hobby since the 1980s and have yet to fully avoid haze when removing tampos. You always seem to get some even if it is so slight you'd hardly notice. Being a transparent body you could try and use the techniques that are done to clear up haze on windshields. Generally this tried and proven method of dipping in floor polish could give you the result your after.

What he did is sand-blasted the tampos off, with sugar as the abrasive and his fingers acting as the compressed air.

Pretty much and yet something not many people are aware of. I see the question all the time on Facebook groups on needing a safe way to remove tampo designs on plastic bodies. With as many times the question is asked, it seemed a video would be helpful.
