Looks like the whole british army was there!!!! Looks like the grenadier guards, the ghurkas, the irish regiment, the Cameron Highlanders, Gordon Highlanders, the black watch, royal Gibraltar regiment, the royal marines, the royal hussars, the north Yorkshire regiment, royal navy, the RAF, the entire household cavalry, the Winnipeg Highlanders, the nova Scotia highlanders, the Saskatchewan highlanders, the royal australian army, the royal Fiji hussars, the royal lancers, the Bermuda rifles, the irish fusiliers, the royal Malaysian regiment, the hong Kong Highlanders, and every regiment that was ever created in the british armed forces

I found out the history of the tune today. It's Good Friday and the message here fits right in. I always loved the above tune, because it is jaunty, yet there is something more as well - some true depth to it. Anyway, the tune dates back to 1848 and what does it convey??? 1) a sense of joyous relief - the lads were due to be posted to the West Indies (which for all the sunshine and whatever was often a short and literally dead-end posting due to disease), but at the last minute they were redirected to Canada (kind of a second home for Jocks even though also risky in terms of the intense cold in winter) 2) a sense of security - because when the troop ship got to Canada the fog in the St Lawrence was so bad that the Captain of the ship told the Band to go on deck and play so that others would know where they were - so they played this tune, and the deep repeating drone (then from the pipes, but above from the trombones) acted as the foghorn until they made it safely into port... I reckon you can feel both of those emotions/blessings in the tune, which is one of the many wonderful things that the Holy Spirit can do for us...

I believe that would be Tonga - their band features in the 2016 show (including in Edinburgh itself)...

Those regiments don't exist anymore - they've been amalgamated.

Those blue kilts look rather like the RCAF tartan. Is that the Australian Air Force equivalent?

Depends. The RAF pipes and drums were there, but if you are referring to the lads in white tunics, the tartan is the Australian Defence Force Academy tartan. The ADF pipes and drums wore the tartan as it is the only tartan in the defence force which reflects all three services, of which the band was made up of. There were pipers and drummers from regimental bands as well as the navy and air force as part of the ADF pipes and drums.
