@@john_casey in his defense, he is a world-class mountain biker. if this trail was not on the edge of a cliff, it would be a piece of cake. I believe the trail is easy for him, but there is always the risk of the cliff. Its like someone walking 2 feet from a cliff. they are perfectly good and capable of walking, but the cliff just makes it risky.

I rode Portal last year, definitely high exposure up top! But I walked way more at the bottom as those switchbacks are so steep, loose and sharp, they are way more difficult than riding the exposed sections. @Remy - thank you for following the signs and dismounting when asked! As always, you are a great ambassador.

I agree. Just getting to start of the Portal is also a quest. Especially for a few dumb Canucks with no idea where they are going. Also, the last time we rode it one of the shops told us to just call a cab at the bottom. But there was no cell service there so we had to ride toward town to make the call. Then, the only cab was apparently 1/2 way to Fruita at the time. So we rode 13 miles back to town to get our truck. All pretty tired and dehydrated. Still worth every minute of it, but I would be better prepared next time for sure. Great video as usual Remy!

In the early days of the Canyonlands Fat Tire Fest Rim Cyclery was the center of the Moab mountain biking universe. Someone had recently fallen off the Portal and Rim had their smashed GT LTS hanging out front to warn us (before the signs) about the risk on Portal Trail. The exposure hasn't changed but the trail is much harder now than it was 30+ years ago. Dirt erodes and rocks move. Thankfully trail crews have armored and stepped sections that were troughs in the past. This is the finest POV video I've seen of Portal. Chapeau Rémy.

I still have my Rim visor hat from 1992. I don’t recall the GT LTS, but Portal still loomed large in everyone’s minds, esp as we had just started riding Rock Shox Mag 21. Glad to see Portal still rocking!

Remi saying "I feel like I'm skilled" is along the same lines as Kevin Durant saying "I think I'm pretty good at basketball". I think I would have to walk Portal, and even then it's sketchy. I walked the white line trail in Sedona and that was enough for me. Portal is certifiable.

One of the kids on my college cycling team died there ~25 years ago. He was a risk taker, went for a jump without having ridden the trail before and it wasn't a jump, it was a turn. He made the landing however many hundred feet down. He landed it, but his chest hit his handlebars and his head kept going and he broke his neck and died. We know that he landed it because he was still clipped in. moral of the story: Remy gives real good advice at the start of this video.

However this was the first video of Remy's where I held on to my chair whilst watching him ride. That cliff edge and long drop to certain death if you flubbed a section twisted my insides. A perfect example of a not super gnar trail ( more tech ) that becomes SO GNAR because if its exposure consequences. The mental game is real, ive seen remy ride stuff more dangerous by the same exact margins the difference being its got a fall away or your body shredded on rocks, exact same outcome if you miss your line, just not quite as in your face as this, ideal the relief when there's boulders down slope of you in those initial pockets, like the mountains cradling you before the !!!!!!!! Great video as always Remy

Unfortunately by hiking up Portal you missed out on riding the Gold Bar Rim singletrack, which IMO was the best part of the Mag 7. Rolls up and down with cool technical features both climbing and descending. Highly recommend hitting that if you get the chance!
