This is my interpretation of the (fibonacci/double dutch) section of Ren's spoken word poem. The fibonacci sequence being (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, ...). It's a mathematical sequence that when drawn out, is an ascending spiral that appears in many patterns throughout nature, also known as the Golden Ratio or Godly form. It's something beautiful & yet has no rational explanation of how it appears in many different parts in nature. Double Dutch in British English, literally means nonsense /gibberish. So what he's poetically saying is that he sees the world as both polar opposites of, unexplainable natural beauty & never ending nonsense.

Yes, it's the juxtaposition of the world having order and meaning versus nothing making sense. Ren sees both, and it drives him crazy.

I think it has multiple meanings, like a lot of Ren's stuff. Not only seeing the order & the chaos, but the Fib. Sequence is heavily used in photography/videography, & given his love of film, I feel it is a way of saying that he feels like an observer of life, but sometimes detached from what he sees, but what he sees often makes no sense to him.

Posted by Ren Ren: Today I want to write something beautiful and eloquent but I’ve been staring at my computer screen for the past 10 minutes blankly. So I’ll just write. Today, the 1st of June is my friend Joe’s birthday. I first met Joe when I was 8 years old, my friend Josh said I had to meet this guy, so we both walked over to his, it took about 10 minutes from my house. I was greeted by this kid covered head to toe in freckles, he grinned at us, climbed onto the back of his sofa and screamed “Swanton Bomb!” then front flipped off the top and landed right onto his back on a stone floor. He lay still for a moment, twitched a few times, then got up, grinned at us, brushed himself off, and did it again. This was Joe. He’d do anything to make people laugh. He ended up becoming one of my best friends. He was there when we stole our first cigarettes out of his mums pack, way too young. He was there when I had my first kiss, with a girl twice my size on the back of the 42 bus. He was there when I first got so drunk I threw up in the woods after drinking as much white lightning Cider as we could. I was there when he did his first backflip on skates, and saw him do a 720 off of the pier cave, that moment became legendary. Joe was the funny one in our friend group, he’d make us laugh till it hurt. No one had a bad word to say about him. It was impossible not to like him. Usually we put celebrities, athletes and actors on pedestals, turn them into role models and admire them from a far. The person I admired was Joe. Him and Sagar knew every word to the songs id write, we’d get drunk at parties and they’d be singing along as loud as they could. It gave me a lot of confidence back then. On Christmas Eve 2010 I was sitting in a pub with Joe, he’d been feeling low after a couple of consecutive break ups. He tried to check himself into a mental health outpatient facility a few weeks earlier but they turned him away because he didn’t have an appointment. He turned to me and said that sometimes he wished he could just walk into the sea and keep walking. He said it in a kind of half joking throw away comment type of way, then took a sip of his drink, walked over to the juke box and put Dig by Incubus on. If I knew that was the last time I’d see Joe id have hugged him, told him how much I loved him, how much I looked up to him, how much we all loved him, and I wouldn’t have left that pub. I didn’t know that, so I finished my drink, said happy Christmas and left. Two nights after Christmas I got woken up by a phone call at 3am, it was my friend Ella. She told me Joe was on the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the main land to the isle of Anglesey where we lived. He’d been on the phone to her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. I pulled on my clothes as fast as I could and started running toward the bridge. It was up a hill. I lived about a ten minute walk away, I could run it in five. As I ran I started dialling then redialing his number. The line was busy, which was a good sign, it meant he was still on the phone to someone. As I got about halfway, the busy tone changed. It told me the line was out of service. I got a sinking feeling and picked up my speed. I arrived to the bridge minutes after I left my house. It was deafeningly quiet. I was the first person to arrive. I got there probably about 2 minutes too late. Joe’s body was never found. Initially we refused to believe he was gone. The coastguard came out that night, with boats, and helicopters. Me and my friends spent the next 10 days putting up missing posters everywhere we could, walking up and down beaches with flashlights, getting about 3 hours sleep a night. When you’re walking up and down a beach with a torch when its dark everything looks like a body. We still haven’t found Joe. As his birthday came around, I wrote a song, freckled angels, a song I dedicated to Joe which I sang in front of his friends and family. A charity football match was put on for him, raising money for the RNLI where I won two bottles of wine in a raffle, I drank them both as quickly as I could, naturally, turned to my friend and probably slurred something along the lines of “This is the last time I ever drink” That was 12 years ago, I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol since. My first ever album I named Freckled Angels in tribute of one of the best people I ever knew. Skip forward some years. I’d been sitting on this song I wrote a few years ago. It always felt a little incomplete. It was going to be my next release, but I was dreading it because of this feeling of incompletion. I decided, very last minute, to do something about it. I sat by my piano, and the rest of the song fell out of me. I hadn’t thought about Joe in a little while, and the song initially wasn’t going to be about him, but the words all fell out of me. I wrote and recorded a whole 2 minutes extra, recording each part as I wrote it. Tears spewing out of my eyes pretty much the whole time, and decided not to do my usual thing of perfecting each line, I just recorded every line as it came. This will be my next release. You can turn on notifications by following the link in the comments below During this campaign I will be raising money for the RNLI, the group of brave men and women who spent hours tirelessly looking for Joe after the night he went missing. I'll also be donating 50% of the profit on all copies of the 'Freckled Angels' album directly to Joes family as a nice surprise gift. I will include links to the RNLI donation page below where 100% of the money will go to support them, I will be travelling to the UK later this month to make a music video, and have carved out a couple of days where I will travel to my home town on the isle of Anglesey to present the royal national lifeboat institution with a cheque of all the money raised.

"We lose our ability to speak English" - you're not alone. Many of us who only speak English experience that with Ren. Thank for the reaction. Ren's ability to approach heavy and poignant subjects in a way that adds light and encourages us to deal with them in positive ways, continues to amaze me. One thing about this that doesn't often get mentioned is the brilliant way the video lightens in the last minute, from the previously dark and gloomy tones, at the point when Ren is verbalizing his deep personal pain. Funny thing. I'm German, English is my second language that I learn and speak since I've been like 6 years old - today with 33 I would say I'm on a conversational level and tend to consume a lot of English spoken/written art/music/content - at least more than German speaking content. When I discovered Ren a few months ago, I immediately had the thought in my head "oh wow, look what how captivating words can be", a thought that only a few artist were able to provoke in me. We get so drowned in meaningless art, especially music and even more rap. I mean we live in a time where gibberish on a mumble rap track is more popular than art like this - something that has substance, a meaning that maybe even helps people out there that are in a bad place.

Great reaction guys. This one certainly hits hard. Ren's pain and anguish at the end is so real and heartbreaking. He had written the first part some time ago but felt it was unfinished. After talking to Knox Hill in an interview and talking about his friend Joe Hughes, he knew how to finish it. He sat down at a piano and recorded what we hear in the second part and the result is probably one of the poignant and powerful anti-suicide songs ever written.

What is amazing is how vulnerable Ren was at when he wrote this and created this video plus currently releasing to it all of us. 2nd is Ren’s loss of his childhood when he lost his innocence and feeling of immortality. He reminds me of the Maestro Tuomas Holopainen who composed most of Nightwish songs, poetry in his lyrics, and music. One theme Tuomas has is Dead Boy meaning a loss of childhood. Ren previous work seems to add meaning and us understand this video. For example, changing face of Ren walking through the cityscape suggests “eternal dancing” between darkness and light in one’s thoughts. Finally, while emphasizing the pain Ren’s friend Joe was going through also showing how hurt he was by the choice his friend Joe made along with the guilt of just possibly missing getting to Joe in time to save him or even to say goodbye plus Joe’s body was never found for closure. I am sure Ren has forgiven himself logically and intellectually but it is very much harder emotionally. In other words, the choices one makes affects more than oneself. As Aurora has sung ‘Let the River Run’.

For what it's worth (and recognizing that everyone's interp is different) I hear How to Be Me as all about Joe. Before he moves explicitly to talk about Joe, I hear it as a description of deep grief and loss. The kind of grief that hits you so hard, changes you so much that you are no longer the same person, and you don't yet know the person you are becoming. Like other major life changes, grief changes us, irrevocably. It's the most amazing description of grief I've ever read.

It's such a genius of a song, the way the last segment changes so drastically it's as you say like a gut punch. There's so much emotional resonance and impact that even though it's the first time I've listened to this song in a year as soon as the song started my mind jumped to the ending and I was fighting back tears.

Ren's heavy breathing at the transition represents him being out of breath from running as fast as he could to the bridge where Joe was. He got a call saying Joe was was there and he was thinking about jumping. Ren lived was closest to the bridge so he got dressed ran there as fast as he could and calling Joe the whole time and it's phone would ring alot and go to voicemail so he thought he still okay. When Ren got there he didn't see Joe anywhere so he called his phone and immediately it said, " this phone is no longer in service" and you only get that message when a phone has been broken or submerged in water and no longer working. So Ren was two minutes too late 😢 RIP JOE HUGHES and everyone else in the world lost to suicide.

I love listening to your reactions. Hope you're having a great week. For me, the first part of this song is struggling with thoughts of wanting things to change. Some of us think the best change would be to not be here and not be a burden on others anymore. The second part of this song speaks to what those choices leave with those left behind. The saddest part of this topic is that our lives are akin to walking next to a pond and casually touching the water now and then. Those touches cause ripples that intersect more than we know. If we purposely stop touching the pond we will often find ourselves staring back at us and many of us don't like what we see. If we leave this life, our ripples die out and we deprive everyone else of that connection going forward. Your ripple might be totally unplanned. Maybe you forced a smile when your barista handed you your coffee. Maybe that forced smile, which the barista didn't know was forced, lifted them out of a funk. We are driven by human interactions (and that's why the pandemic and the forced lockdowns were so horrendous in my opinion). Your ripples have touched my over here in America. I hope your move to Canada is going ahead, if that is still the plan, and if not, I hope you find whatever path you want to take. Love from this Minnesotan but soon to be Texan.

i feel the first 2 verses are about what makes him consider suicide and the last verse is what stops him from choosing suicide. the only victims of suicide are those left living having lost a part of themselves.

One of the best reactions I've seen on this song. Being speechless after this song is the best reaction to have. I can't help but cry every time I hear it. It's perhaps the most moving song I've ever listened to. Ren is truly a singer and a special human being.

Všetci sme rovnaký zvnútra aj z vonka. Na farbe pleti na vierovyznaní nezáleží. Tolerancia je budúcnosť. Lenže niekto nemá záujem aby to bolo takto pekne fungujúce, lebo by s toho nebol zisk. Súťaž a vojna je spôsob ako docieliť zisk. Mnoho ľudí túto realitu vidí a nemôže si pomôcť a radšej s tohto sveta uniknú. Nezažil som to, žijem v malej krajine, kde pred nedávnom spáchali týto ľudia atentán na predsedu vlády a zaútočili tak na demokraciu. Vidím, že mladý ľudia utekajú s krajiny, pretože si mysli, že tam vonku je Klondike.... mýlia sa. Pohltí ich to tak isto... rozšírilo sa zlo po celom svete.

You got it right the first section was allegorical verse speaking to Ren's own experience, but the end was about his friend when they were 19 years old. Now you have to cover the follow on work of 'For Joe,' both explain the title of his first album 'Freckled Angels.' For those who have been touched by someone who took their own life, the lyrics in 'Hi Ren' of 'The voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope' hits so hard, some reactors get it, some are very deeply effected by that moment, either because they had their own attempt, or someone close to them succeeded. One of the sad things about jumping off a bridge is what they found out when interviewing survivors from jumping off the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, almost everyone said that just after they step out into the open air and began falling they regretted it and the issues that caused them to do so seemed small. Joe called a girl friend who then called Ren around 2 or 3 in the morning, Ren was woken up and ran to the bridge which takes 10 minutes walking, he kept redialing Joe's phone and just 2 minutes from reaching him the message changed to 'this number is not in service' meaning the signal was lost.

The back half of this song is a beautiful tribute to Ren's friend Joe. You guys should really listen to (one of) his other tributes to Joe, "How to be Me (live) - RenXChinchilla". This guy has so many layers.

Try something upbeat from Ren as a break from some of the deeper songs. Look for The Big Push (A band Ren busked with) and their energetic performance of their mashup of "I Shot The Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" There are a few versions out there, but look for the one where he's wearing red suspenders. You'll be introduced to some other talented performers in that group and feel the buzz of happy from the live audience. :)

I hope you guys aren't busy next week! Ren release's an acoustic version of this song next Thursday and he's added a couple of new verses to it.. But to give you an upbeat positive Ren song to vibe out and have a good time with you should watch his song "Losing it (the fisher rap retake)" it completely shows a whole different side to Ren and his musical genius, Ren has some serious music in his catalogue but some times you just need to feel the "vibe" and have a little fun!
