"Two zero zero five" - is 2005, the year the twins were born. They both died at 14 years old in 2019, the year that Jenny's Tale was first released. Just another little bit of genius detail, not trying to correct you. The other two songs were released over the next couple of years, and as far as I know, Ren didn't have the whole story worked out when he began it. There was no Violet yet when Jenny died. As for the location, this was filmed in Brighton, in a small neighborhood where pretty well all of his videos are filmed. In fact the area he operates in is so small the same locations are used multipe times, or can be seen in the background of other videos. It's amazing how much utility Ren gets out of so little - his voice, his guitar, his friend Sam and his camera, his neighborhood. A true inspiration for any independent artist.

When you see what he and his collaborator/friend Sam did with MG3... and the fact that Ren was in Canada getting treatments for the entire lead-up to its filming. Between Hi Ren, The Tales, and the Money Game trilogy, Ren has cemented himself at the top for me.

I see this on every reaction to these tracks... People refer to Jenny as a woman who may have been a prostitute. But when you know the full story, her being Screech's twin, then you know she was just a 14 year old girl because Screech was only 14 in his tale, which makes it all the more tragic.

Ren totally inhabits all the characters, and there is NO dead space. Even the silences or pauses are calculated to move the story. In a couple of places, after the phone call, and when standing from the hospital bed, you can see Ren shudder, as if to shake himself into the next persona or scene of the narrative.

We make a point not to research the songs before we react, so we didn't know the year of release, so 2-0-0-5 made more sense as a postcode/zipcode at the time of recording. Great reaction, guys. Just to fill in a few blanks, as any of the Renegades would do. Yes, Jenny was a prostitute ( it's nightime, "walked the route a thousand times before", "high heal shoes", "rosie off your cheeks"...). The tales were inspired by a news article that Ren read about a teenage boy who killed a prostitute that ended with the quote "It's such a shame". The overall story illustrates the cycle of violence. Jenny is quiet like her mother. Screech violent like his father. There is some discussion that Violet was a prostitute as well and Stevie her pimp. It would make sense coming from an abusive home. There are a number of other details in the story that you pick up on subsequent plays but it's always impactful.
@samuelsomething6059
@samuelsomething6059 6 ай бұрын
Regarding Violet… My take is that Violet was not actually a prostitute… Instead she was just a shy, quiet girl who was abused and broken down, but she survives her upbringing, gets her own place and gets a job to support herself. Then unfortunately meets Stevie who ends up abusing her as well. So for me, Violet is the loss of innocence and hope, which adds another level of tragedy to the story. Had she lived, her children may have had the love and support to keep them from turning to the streets.
@MizCriz46
@MizCriz46 6 ай бұрын
To me, it doesn't make sense that Stevie would call Violet a slut if she was pregnant with his own child. I think she was already pregnant by someone else when she met him & I think it was by her own "bastard" father. He was, after all, raping her. "every night." Either way, it's a masterfully told tale of the dark cycle of family trauma & violence.
@payntpot7623
@payntpot7623 6 ай бұрын
Sorry? Why on earth would Violet be stacking supermarket shelves if she is working the streets as well? That makes no sense at all. Ren only has a few words to describe each idea and so he is specific with his words to paint his picture. Jenny's high heels, etc..., as you point out; say "street worker". Violet's "stacking shelves" is just that. She works at a supermarket. Why try to change what Ren is telling you? Makes no sense to me why a discussion around that would have begun. If they are not satisfied with the story Ren has given usyone entertaining that thought perhaps needs to write their own stories and songs? "Why you lying to me, Violet" could very easily just mean; why pretend to be asleep?

@@payntpot7623 I think people have confused Violet & Jenny's tale. Jenny was a prostitute, high heeled shoes, rosy cheeks and walking the streets a thousand times before. Violet worked at a supermarket, was possibly pregnant by her abusive father.

If you choose to do that series, Part 2 is a simple lyric video. There is a live version, but it only includes one verse - the lyric video is the full song. Just an FYI.

I heard Ren say that Violet's Tale was made for less than 100 pounds. 50 of that was spent on the "hospital room", which is actually a bike storage room in a friend's apartment building (there are bicycles behind the privacy curtain) and most of that was spent on the child's bed which Ren ordered by accident because it was cheap. As usual, they had no permission to film there. The first 2 segments of the trilogy cost even less. The guy is a miracle worker. (None of the 100+ Ren music videos before MG3 cost more than 1,000 pounds. Some, like CRUTCH, had a budget of literally zero.)

This wasn't originally a trilogy story. Ren read a small article about a 14 yr old boy killing a young prostitute with a knife in an attempted robbery. Knife crime had been skyrocketing in London at this time. Later that same evening the boy had been shot and killed by the armed police division that responded to a sighting of a possible suspect for a girl found murdered in Sussex Gardens area in Paddington - one of the capital's most notorious red light districts. It disturbed him, so I BELIEVE he set out to write a commentary not just on senseless violence, but on how desensitized we've become to it. The words he ends both Jenny and Screech's Tales with is "It's such a Shame" we say these words all to often and just move on without a second thought. The the lead inspector was quoted saying " So Young, It's such a shame". Violets Tale was written over 2 years later & IN MY VIEW adding yet another layer of commentary by Ren. I believe he wanted us to consider not only generational violence but to make us look at all angles of society that we turn a blind eye to. Both characters are born out of violence on that cruel night of Violets beating and then both killed with brutal violence in the same night 14yrs later. Also, his lyrics have even more meaning when you read in between the lines. For example he doesn't say what Jenny was doing or why she wanted to escape from this place & life, or why Screech thought she was older saying at Patrick's door "I left this lady lying on the floor". Could that be because the way she's dressed & her heavy makeup? Also why was a 14yr old girl out so late in the dead of night walking alone in a sketchy area, wearing high heeled shoes, walking down a street that "she's walked it a thousand times before"? Everything points to Jenny being an underage prostitute, showing us what Ren writes has reason & is made to make us think. There's no fat on the bone, every word is weighed & has meaning. Interesting how Jenny has the same traits as her mother Violet, quiet, voiceless, and timid. Whereas Screech mirrors his father Stevie (the Prick boyfriend) in every way, Loud, obnoxious, and easily provoked to violence. They didn't know one another and had never met their biological parents. What made these kids so much like their parents? Was it simply Nature, inherited traits due to their genetic make-up OR Nurture, being brought up in the broken governmental system filled with, mistreated & in many cases, abused children, shuffled from one foster home to another ? He organically takes us on this journey, leaving us to think shouldn't we be doing better in this so called "advanced, wealthy, 1st world society. I'm loving your reactions. Cheers 🥂

Gentlemen, I've loved all your Ren reactions but this trilogy has been my favorite review thus far. Personally I believe; since you're both film makers, you'd both appreciate reviewing Ren's Money Game trilogy next. Ren's piano skills in pt.3 alone should convince you but here's my pitch anyway. 🙏🔥😎🤑 Part 1: is in the similar format of Ren's Tale trilogy & Hi Ren, which can be considered live performance pieces that are performed in 1 take. Ren has commented that this was his first attempt at this style of video & it took them over 130 takes to get the right shot, choreography & music to flow perfectly. Part 2: is a studio recording with Ren & his videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey creating an artistic lyric video to assist in the messaging/storytelling. Pt.2 shows the money game through a narrower lens of corporate greed & government corruption & its effects on our present day society. Part 3: Is Ren's magnum opus, once again returning to his one shot live performance format with Samuel Perry-Falvey behind the lens, but on a grander scale then anything they've attempted to date. Ren has even stated that in scale & technicality, this was his most ambitious project yet. Ren wraps up this trilogy telling us the life story of a single fictional character raised from birth in this money game, tightening the focus of the lens even more. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber shared Money Game 3 on Instagram and said Ren is one of the best storytellers he has seen in a long time. Film maker Jonathan Hiller was blown away by the story, as well as the cinematography & choreography. By the end of the video Jonathan say's " this is the genius of Ren, by the end of the video his art transcended into a spiritual realm. Ren's use of negative space is captivating & was utterly transformative." I'm really hoping to see you both reacting to the money game series & that I had a small hand in convincing you both in doing it 😁. 🙏

24:45 100% - every single breath is calculated. That sounds torturous to me, but I think it comes easy to him. Every second of his videos is finely honed. Also wrt the clarity of his audio. He explained somewhere that every second is meticulously mixed to keep all the levels perfect and very clean and clear, despite the weal lapel mic he wears. All of this is the result of obsessive levels of planning, preparation, and post-recording mixing. But he loves to do it, his eyes - and Sam's as well - light up when they talk about it. Ren did an interview with Black Pegasus while in Canada, and Sam had flown over to visit and film a video ("For Joe" it was called - a whole other story and side of Ren). I'd recommed the interview, hearing Ren speak about his art, and struggles is a whole other thing, again.

You guys have given us an excellent reaction to REN’s masterful tale of generational violence on the streets of London. From what I know, Ren took elements of a news story about the death of a young prostitute at the hands of a young thug who was himself killed by police, and wove this tragic tale. The line” it’s such a shame” at the end of the first two tales is a commentary on news anchors who relate a story like this, offer up a weak platitude of it’s such a shame and then move on to the weather or whatever. Ren pulls no punches in his stories and gives us a look into what is happening on the streets of his city and into the epidemic of knife violence sweeping the UK. Thank you and I’ll be watching for more.

Something I've observed, having seen many reactions to the Tales: in Violet's Tale, from the KNOCK to the fast-forward is 1 minute, and in that minute, regardless of how the reaction is to that point, EVERYONE is captured, and has a mix of anger and sadness by the end of it. *However*, for those that "get" the twist, nearly everyone has a feeling of elation or almost happy surprise, followed by genuine deep thoughts back in the song when it clicks. Don't know what causes the elation, but its definitely there, and I love that it is. 🙏🏻❤️

I think the elation may come from the fact that everyone gets a little giddy at a perfectly told story with a surprise ending. Then the realization of the story's elements quickly punch you in the gut.

It was filmed in Brighton. (Seagulls, even the town's football team are nicknamed the Seagulls) As rough as some of these tales are. they are proving to be safe spaces here on the internet for people to discuss and help each other. with respect and understanding. it's a magical thing. Ren was inspired to write Jenny's Tale when he read of a prostitute being murdered by a 14 year old boy and he wondered how that had come about. how does a 14 year old boy come to a place where he kills someone in the street. the other two are abstractions from that original premise. Great work, in my opinion. Ren was raised in a very small, rural community in North Wales. (Same place as myself)

2 zero zero 5 was 14 years earlier from the Jennie and Screeh tales, which he did in 2019. And, doesn't anyone but me get the ghost vibe from the first singing in Violet's tale. When we feign a ghost voice, how do we do it? Whooo-oooh-ooooo. It hit me that way instantly.

Ren tells the stories and the filming of the stories are all done so well i found myself looking for the bodies laying on the ground. The saddest thing about this is the fact each of these things are happening in every country at this very moment and the cycle continues

1) If you wanna continue the heavy-hitting stuff without a break, you have 2 options: - back to autobiographical Ren for some incredible singing, do Chalk Outlines (LIVE). You also get to meet Chinchilla, who Ren describes as his musical sibling, and that should tell you something about what you might hear on Chalk Ourlines. Nicely-done little 1-take video, too. or - as so many are suggesting, jump into the Money Game trilogy. More rap-focused than singing, but he does use his singing voice to beautiful effect in Part 1. MG1 is my favourite Ren video anywhere in his catalogue. Incredible visual storytelling. MG2 is often cited as a fan-favourite - it's studio produced and plays well as a song on a playlist (while also having brilliant lyrics). WATCH THE LYRIC VIDEO FOR MG2, not the live video. MG3 is another cinematographic masterpiece; story-telling through and through, in both the song and the video. 2) If you think you'd like a break from the darkness and the intensity, go for pure musical collaboration JOY and check out The Big Push's I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (the one with Ren wearing red suspenders... other versions of Ren doing Sheriff exist, both solo and with The Big Push, but the Red Suspenders Ren performance is the stratospherically good one). Or if one of you happens to be a big Black Sabbath fan, try the video of The Big Push doing War Pigs first instead. The Big Push isn't "Ren's backup band." The 4 of them genuinely adore each other as musicians and songwriters (certainly the 3 guitarists anyway; I'm still not super clear on whether Glenn was a part of their songwriting/creative process once he joined... apologies to Glenn if you were, I don't want to diminish your contributions to everything!) Ren *is* mainly the front man for the band, but Gorran and Romain take lead vocals sometimes. And Girran sometimes plays guitar, while Ren takes over the bass. My understanding is that they broke up/went on hiatus because Ren didn't know how long he'd be in Canada pursuing treatment. It's been almost year now (plus, Ren didn't know if the treatment would help him enough to restore more of a normal life to him - I think his health probably prevented The Big Push from playing the kind of shows they wanted to play. Not sure how long other talented musicians could afford to mostly only play shows via busking, no matter *how* amazing Ren is and no matter how much they love each other). This is long enough, apologies! Loved this reaction to Jenny & Screech A LOT. I really enjoyed your commentary on the structure of the narrative & video. You kept saying things during Jenny's Tale and Screech's Tale that were even more highly relevant/bang on the money than you knew, because of their relevance to Violet's Tale.

Fantastic reaction and yes...the whole point of these tales are for us to look at how we are as a society. Ren explained once that this story came about from him watching a news report on a young prostitute having been stabbed to death by a 14 year old boy in London. But what struck him the most were the reporter's words at the end 'it's such a shame'. The brushing off of the tragedy of what happened to just move on to another news story, as if there was nothing anyone could have done about it anyway I think is what bothered Ren the most. You were right about Jenny in her being a prostitute unfortunately, bc you realise that if she was 14 like her twin, why was she walking the streets a thousand times at night, in high heels ans rosy cheeks. This adds to the tragedy bc then you realise the reason why she would find herself in that situation ( she was also abused as a child like her mum). Oh and 2005 is not a postcode but the year. Jenny and Screech were 14 at the time those tales came out which was 2019 and 2005 places Violet's tale 14 years prior at their birth. Please now do The Money Game trilogy. Another absolutely fantastic trio of related songs by Ren but not in the same way as this one. Please also choose the official Lyric video for Money Game 2 and not the live as the latter is not as complete. Can't wait! 😊

If you want to see more of Ren's range I would suggest the Love Music series (1-4) it is amazing. There is so much and it's all good. Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla (do live not lyric video), Animal Farm (1st official, then live). Crutch (with Bibi), Murderer (1st official, then live). I could fill the page but I've never seen a Ren video that didn't make me think or feel.

We've added them all to the request list. It's a long list, so it might take us a while to get to all of them, but we intend to try. We don't really do multiple versions of the same songs (live/official), so we generally choose one and go with it. Requests can be bumped up the line if they are made via Buy Me A Coffee (link in description). Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! 🙏

One last comment (God help us all lol) - if you do Money Game 1, 2, and 3 there is no need to do them all at once like you did here with The Tales, or even necessarily in order - there is no cohesive narrative at all, they simply share a common theme. I would even suggest doing Part 2 first as it is a simple little song and lyric video, and pair it with Part 1, which is an actual video worthy of analysis. Regardless, Part 3 is deserving of its own time to be appreciated. It's a lot to take in. Imo.

After watching Hi Ren, Sick Boi and Jenny's tale ( trilogy) I think you would really enjoy his Money Game trilogy, part 1 and part 3 are live videos. Part 2 is a lyric video that is amazing. Money Game part 1 and part 3, along with Hi Ren, Sick Boi and the Jenny's Tale trilogy were all filmed by one of Ren's best friends and award winning cinematographer, Samuel Perry-Falvey. Story telling at another level.

The tales are a pure masterpiece, these should be studied in universities their that important, I’ve done a breakdown of all the main characters with my theories of how it all fits together on my YT, like all great art it’s up to the individual to get what they want from it so I’m not claiming my Theories are correct but offer an explanation

I like to think, Ren takes care of his audience. Even dark songs have safe elements to them, and you guys picked up on that. In the listening we are involved, and concerned, yet safe ourselves. He is very clever, even my limited musical ear can pick up on that fact. I look on Ren as a Pied Piper, who pulls his listeners in a dance along whatever path he chooses. sometimes we cry, sometimes we laugh and always we are left contemplating what we heard, and wanting more. Always wanting more.... Edited to add, I have watched countless reactions to this trilogy, and you guys rank in the top few reactions. You seem to appreciate the genius of Ren's works (and mind). Thanks.

He talks about repeating his performance and lyrics exhaustively beforevthe filming night. He practices till he could do it in his sleep Also the yales were done a year apart with Jenny and Screech and Violet came 2 years later still. Ren created an entire online treasure hunt in preparation of release of Money Game 3. With clues all over regarding the 7 deadly sins. There were cash peizes and it required us to use colkective intalligence to solve. On the last one the winner actually dug up a suitcase of money and was faced with a decision. When the decision was made the video EDEN came up on the live stream. Worth doing a reaction to this. The live twitch stream after was incredible.

Wow wow wow! Excellent reaction and analysis!! Very insightful! (Sorry this got really long 😅) I just watched your reactions to Hi Ren, Sick Boi, and now the Tale of Jenny and Screech. Best line ever “Ren is a musical Swiss Army knife” 😂😂 it’s so true! And you are so right, everything Ren does is very intentional. He is a master storyteller and puppeteer. He has said before that music is his therapy. He has also discussed in interviews that part of his purpose as an artist is to create an “empathy window” and “threads of humanity” through sometimes difficult or ugly topics to help people feel seen and less alone, to give a voice to the voiceless, and to help people understand and relate to what others are going through. I think you realized during Violets Tale that these are recorded live. Hi Ren was also recorded live, all with a lavaliere mic. And Ren does almost all of his own audio engineering too! A HUGE shout out needs to go to Samuel Perry-Falvey, the cinematographer behind Hi Ren, Sick Boi, and The Tales, as well as many of Ren’s other videos (including Money Game 1 and 3)! Hi Ren was a nominee at Camerimage in 2023! There’s so much more Ren I want you to see! You have to do the Money Game trilogy!! I would suggest doing each video separately. Part 1 and Part 3 are also one shots recorded live (well, technically pt 3 is two shots). For part 2 you need to do the lyric video. Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla (live) will show you more of his singing voice. I think you would appreciate Crutch featuring Bibi. It’s an older video and a bit less known but tells more of Ren’s story. It came out not long after his Lyme disease diagnoses, but may have been made prior to that. You really can’t go wrong with anything Ren does. And you never know what you’re going to get. Also highly recommend reacting to his former band, The Big Push. A great starting point is I Shot The Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop medley (the one with Ren in red suspenders, about 8 min long), and Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard medley. They also have some great original songs.
