Removing the Cylinder head from a 1.2 16v D4F engine removed from a 2002 Clio
I'm stripping the engine down as it came in a spares Clio I was given last year and it's a good excuse to strip one of these engines down to make this video. There have been a number of people asking for a head gasket video for the Clio and this is as close as I can give.
I still recommend following a Haynes manual to note the bolt sequence for removing the cylinder head and torque figures for refitting but this basically shows how the head comes off on this engine. It's been removed from the car so it's easier to see but it can all be done with the engine in the car.
As I am stripping the engine down fully some steps and parts removed may not be totally necessary to get the head off but nonetheless are included in the video.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV not had one of these engines stripped. Last Renault I did a head on was iirc a Renault 16. Back in those days Renaults did not have a solid block but individual pots. Head was removed by tapping and twisting clockwise or anti clockwise. One of the head studs in central position ( can’t remember which one)had a dowel that went from block casing to the head and a head bolt passed through it. By levering the head upwards instead of twisting. One invariably broke the seals on the bottom of the pots. Resulting in coolant leaking in to the sump resulting in redoing the job. I’m currently looking for a scrap one of these engines and possibly a 1.4 or 1.6 engine to see if it’s possible to swap parts and possibly increase capacity. Done this in past on fiats and Vw engines. Same block ,same crankshaft Different throw and Conrod length. Can you confirm if engine is a solid block or has pots ????

That is the connector for the ECU, it has a bizarre security cover. Most are chiseled off, i never thought ECU theft was that big an issue but renault in the early 2000s deemed it to be an issue.

Very good video. Please do you know where the vehicle speed sensor is located?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV Жыл бұрын
Hi the crankshaft position sensor is located under the air filter around the bellhousing, it takes the speed from the flywheel
@mrjameschong
@mrjameschong 2 жыл бұрын
know? that's a variant of the d4f engine. The one here in Latin America differs from that one essentially by the intake manifold and the air filter, which is bigger here, the location of the ecu, which in the twingo is behind the battery, but otherwise it is the same engine. I see that it is common that these cars have been sold without air conditioning
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 2 жыл бұрын
That is interesting, there is a few variations of the D4F here also. The clio 3 had a different layout but it was the same engine, the proton savvy also got the engine with a different looking inlet. Is it common in latin america to get cars with no air conditioning? Over here the climate is much colder, A/C might only be needed for a few weeks of the year and even then an open window can usually suffice, most entry level versions of small cars for years did not get air conditioning although its generally becoming more common now.
@mrjameschong
@mrjameschong 2 жыл бұрын
@@peugeotCitroen2CV yes... in Latin America it is more common to have air conditioning, our climate is mostly tropical... and even so, where the climate is more extreme, there is also. Also air conditioning has become a security resource in our countries; added to the one that says that a car at 80kph on the highway consumes less gasoline than one with open windows for aerodynamic reasons (and the mythbusters corroborated it)

Did they ever do a twin cam version. Would be fun to hear it humming away at full pelt.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 2 ай бұрын
Hi, i do not think the 1.2 engines were ever offered in twin cam variety, even this being a 16v it was through a single camshaft. Possibly the 1.6 might have been although i might not have enough pub quiz knowledge about the renault petrols🤣. The 172 and 182 i would imaine were twin cam revvy engines. There was the TCe version of this 1.2 engine in the clio mk3, a bit of a bugger on to do stuff like a starter change due to pipes being in the road but it does have a useful bit of extra torque. The naturally aspirated D4F really feels a bit underpowered in the heavier MK3. Its still offered in the MK4 which really did feel quite sluggish although its a basic engine so not much to go wrong and good for urban driving. Although id actually go for the 1.5 DCI K9K engine it suits those renaults a lot better, especially on the motorway where the petrols can get a bit droney.

Which socket size do I need for the cylinder head screws and what is the tightening torque?
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 9 ай бұрын
Hi you will need a set of inverse torx sockets a set as the engine has a few sizes in other places. Sorry i cant remember the exact size of the head bolts, as for torque figures i would recommend the Haynes manual or a manual off ebay. Unfortunately i do not keep them to hand. The owners club or forums might also have that information available.

Man I'm rebuilding my twingo c3g engine, it's so much more work here, and the c3g also has a lot of work. I would expect they improve the complexity of fixing things over time, but they didn't. Why do they make it that you have to remove so many things to repair one thing, they shouldn't block access to parts and put other components on the side.
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 5 жыл бұрын
Its mostly the same on all cars, ok some are easier to work on than others (suzuki samurai for example) but most modern cars typically require a fair bit of stripping to get to various components.
@ronenfe
@ronenfe 5 жыл бұрын
@@peugeotCitroen2CV and then you have more chances that other things that you take apart will break during removal or you connect them wrong and you won't find the problem. Not to mention the time you spend more. They should think about ease of repair when they design it.

@Beverstoncastle5068 5 жыл бұрын
@@ronenfe Sadly that is not so likely to happen. When it comes to ease of repair car manufacturers seem to be emulating phone companies in that they would rather you bought a new one than fix the old one.
