Our Renault Clio 1.2 has the common airbag-service light issue and although there are a few videos on KZfaq showing different causes and fixes, none of them show the other possible problems so in this video we look at how to check what issue you may have.

Another common airbag and serv fault rarely discussed on KZfaq is the rotational connector behind the steering wheel for the driver air bag. It's also called a squib or clockspring. It wears out and one wire breaks giving an 'open circuit' fault. Its a cheap replacement too from an ebay secondhand dealer.

@@retrorestore Yep. Sure was. I went through everything and it did turn out to be the connection under the seat and all I had to do was spray a bit of WD40 and lights went straight out when I reconnected the two terminals. What I liked about your video was that you showed everything that could cause the problem so all I needed to do was go through them one at a time until the lights went out. Mate you saved me a lot of time and money... Many thanks.. :)

Hi Martin, you've made my evening! My son has this car (06 model) and we've done exactly the same as you and wiggled the grey connector etc to no effect. We hadn't heard of the connector you found (that was faulty) so that has to be it! And yes that has to be worth 15 notes on eBay. Cheers buddy! If that works we will be over the moon as otherwise it's his ideal first car. Quite agree with other comments on here regarding French car electronics - I had a C4GP and all the warning lights came on one day even though the car was still driveable. It turned out that the front screen rain ducts (tubes carrying rainwater away from the windscreen and supposedly dumping the water on the road) actually had caps on the end that presumably were designed to open when water built up behind them - wtf?????? Over time the crud from the road meant that the end caps collected a sufficient amount of dirt to stop them opening - with the result that they did fail to open and the water built up behind them and eventually overflowed into the engine bay causing electrical mayhem! Thankfully it all dried out and we were lucky. I did however take those end caps off (right underneath the engine, 2 of them) and loads of foul water poured out - French overthinking there... why put a cap on a tube that has to get rid of the water? Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but thanks again as I'm sure your diagnosis could be the problem for our Clio. Cheers! Mike from Sandhurst.

Big help this: thanks. My daughter’s Clio had the same dash error lights. I’d narrowed it down to the connectors under the seat, but didn’t know about the dash binnacle or the pre-tensioners. Disconnected battery, waited for a couple of hours and liberally sprayed SWITCH cleaner, not WD40, and fired her up. All sorted 😎👍

Absolute DRIVEL! The problems this Clio is having is EXACTLY the same problems most cars have with the airbag lights/plugs - not just a Renault problem. This is a FOURTEEN year old car and for that age of car it has done excellent to have needed so little to get it through the MOT. As I have commented above Renaults are the most reliable of the European manufacturers plus they do not sell more vans in Europe than anyone else for nothing - if they were unreliable or crap that wouldnt be the case. We have used Renault Kangoo and Clio vans for a long time now and they are very reliable. I also own a 2008 Renault Kangoo Expression car and that is very reliable as well and all it has needed to pass the last couple of MOTs is a bulb each time. I'll take my Kangoo over what ever you have anytime even if it is a Ferrari.

Hi! My Clio 2 had the same problem of the 2 warning lights, service and airbag then they turned off all alone. Yesterday I was parking my car and I heared a clack noise coming from the steering wheel, like something inside the steering cover was making contact. This morning went up the 2 lights again. It must be that contact you showed! I have to check it! Thank you!
@muaythai4lifelife

I checked it and it was probably that connector not properly on its place. After pushing any connector back, the noise during the turning of the steering wheel came off and the 2 lights went off as well. I was very worried my steering was broken in a badly way. Fortunately it was just a cable interference. Thank again! Cheers

Excellent video!BTW I would like to ask you something. A friend of mines owns a 2002 year model. He has the same problem.A few years ago he went to a Renault dealership and they cut-and then resoldered-the wires under the passenger seat but still no luck.Service and airbag lights are still on.About a week ago he took it to another Renault dealership and they told him that all 4 airbags have a problem and they need to be replaced. Is it possible?I highly doubt it because it's a little bit weird to have 4 faulty airbags at the same time .Is there any chance that the lights are on because of a blown fuse(airbag fuse)? He hasn't inspected the fuse yet. Also, the task you do at 2:35,is it safe to do it like you do or is it better to remove the negative cable from the battery(you didn't remove it because I can see the immobilizer light flashing)? Finally, considering that the "trick" with the passenger seat sensor didn't work out,if we check out the fuse and it's not blown and we push the cable like you did at 2:35 but the problem still exists, will a new squib resolve the problem once for all?Sorry for my long message!!!

The Peugeot 306s have problems with the door looms, its a design flaw in the loom. The loom physically snaps where the loom comes out of the bulk head to the plug into the door. It was more common on the old mk1 306s and I think mk2 306s, All you have to do is extend the wires, and replace blown fuses. Just another heads up if anyone has problems with door electrics,

Funny we have used Renault Kangoo and Clio vans for years with NO problems with them. I have a 2008 Kangoo Expression DCi car version last of the first generation and never had any problem with that either apart from the airbag light which I know to be the plug under the drivers seat as all I do is press it back together and the light goes out until the next pothole knocks it back on. In the three years I have had this Kangoo it has sailed through the MOT every time only needing a number plate bulb in one MOT and a headlight bulb in the MOT it has just gone through.

The CRP129 is OK to read basic codes and can be picked up for less than a hundred quid. For best value in their range I would opt for the CRP touch pro. Full android touch screen op system and has .. almost .. dealer level diagnostics on most cars. Can be bought for a tad under 300 quid but worth every penny. Quick note about sensors .. buy the best you can afford, OEM if possible. You can get burned with cheap aftermarket stuff and end up loading up the parts cannon unnecessarily.

Good job. Not sure if you guys can get a diagnostic device called BluDriver. It's a scanner where you plug in a small block to the engine light port under the dash board. You then sync it to your mobile phone using a Bluetooth connection and read the codes on your phone. The software is free to download to your phone off the 'net. It works great and you can read and/or clear the codes right on the phone. It's pretty slick! The whole thing cost me $100 USD.

I had similar success diagnosing a miss fire on a Alfa 156 using a Bluetooth obd II reader and an app on my Android tablet and I ain't no car mechanic. The diagnostics plus the coil pack cost about twenty quid from ebay. 😀 That was a one off for me though as I don't usually do this sort of stuff. It might be worth the investment for Martin's diagnostics reader if you do this thing a lot.

I'm not up on modern cars computer systems but you are right Steve, you need a diagnostic tool to read the codes instead of just changing out parts as a lot of people do.

@@canalboating if you have an Android tablet you can buy a cheap bluetooth reader and try using that. There are plenty of apps for it. The one I used was called torque (I think).

When we did our training on airbag systems, they told you to disconnect the battery and wait 20min for the system to lose its charge or you could set the air bags off. Might be something to watch out for, wouldn't want to see you eat the code reader if it went off!

Oh Dear! The ignorance! Renault are the most reliable of the European brands and have been for the last decade at least. ALL of the German brands are POOR for reliablity in the ACTUAL break down charts here in the UK and they are being slated all over the world esprcially in the US and Australia etc. Renault makes and sells more vans than anyone else in Europe as well with Vauxhall/Opel, Nissan and now Fiat vans just being rebadged Renaults. The Mercedes Citan is just a Renault Kngoo van with different grill, dashboard and badges and is made in the same French factory as the Renault Kangoo and yet you get the mugs paying more for the Citan just because it has the Mercedes badge on it. Mercedes uses Renault engines, gearboxes etc on some of its cars now as well with the A-Class being a Megane underneath a different body. We have used Kangoo and Clio vans for a long time and they are very reliable so much so I bought a 2008 Kangoo DCi Expression car version which has cruised through every MOT ever since with only a number plate or headlight bulb being needed to pass. This Clio in the video is 14 years old and the problems it has had here are the EXACT same problems you will find in any other car of that age especially to do with the airbag light - these are common problems on most cars.

Lol I had a Renault Kangoo van did 230,000 miles it was bought off me by the machanic who seviced it. He had it for another two years. It doesnt matter what car you have if you dont look after it. Renault are ok if you give them a drink of oil every now and again
