Awesome tip, thank you. I was trying to render a Christmas tree and the needles were really adding to the render time. I am using Redshift 3.5 on a Mac with an EGPU, so I used the RS Sprite and it cut render time from over five minutes to 49 seconds!

Man you are awesome. Thank you. I am going to try this. I have a lot of vegetation in my render scene, and could reduce a lot with the use of proxys, now with this method I hope I can reduce even more. No way I am going to use Lumion for ArchViz. .. Cinema4D and Redshift is the future. Thank you for your tutorials. I am subscribing you.

@@JonathanWinbush Yeah I tried Unreal, but with 43 years old and 20 years of cinema use, I think I will try to learn all over again. I am really happy ... my problem is ... don't laughg ... I am working in a 2012 mac machine, and no money to buy a new computer, so as soon redshift came out, i updated my macpro with a Vega56 and I am really happy with Redshift. I was using physical render ..lol prehistoric I know. :D With this technique and with proxy I reduced a 5 hour render to 1 hour.... amazing. I come from the time I took days to do an image :)

Thanks man, this really is a great tip! - It works great with solid black and white masks, but it seems to have an issue with anything that's feathered or has a gradient, like trans-mapped hair. Is it possible that this node only sees with a limited bit depth? - would be great if it handled soft edges as well, as from what I have seen so far, layered, feathered alphas take considerably longer to render using the opacity option :/
@JonathanWinbush

WINBUSH thanks, I’ll check it out. It occurs to me that this very limitation (shallow bit depth) might be the very reason it’s so damned quick compared to a 32bit aware opacity channel. I’ll see what some of the other seasoned users have to say though! ;)

Anyone know if this has changed? Now I get the error "Cannot insert this type of node into Head Node" then Redshift crashed and then C4D crashed right after that. Also maybe because I was in the main node editor and not the shader graph?

use the sprite node not as a material! You have to plug it between your rs material node and your output node in your shader graph. Then put the opacity map in the image path of the rs sprite node!

Because of the opacity, I can use the default gradient, but if it is a sprite material, it will not work. The sprite material can only use textures.

something you forgot to mention and it's kind important, is that with the sprite node you cannot have graduated alphas.. (no grey values, either black or white) in your example you didn't see much of a different because the opacity map didn't have soft gradient.
