Geist is a no button against Jade Idols (and anything 1 mana), Steamcleaner is a no button against plagues, bombs and anything shuffled in. Team 5 is not going to change their design strategy now.

(Especially if you drop Helya) Geist is the only exception, and even then, many Hearthstone KZfaqrs expressed their disdain for Geist’s design as a ‘no button’ against basically just Jade Druid.

@@DonQuixoteFan and they can hold their Steamcleaner until you play your plagues/bombs. And that is even before we talk about double Steamcleaners or decks that are running bounce. I get why people might hate cards like Steamcleaner/Geist. The problem is Team 5 loves to create recurring/endless effect that induce rage in players and destroy archetypes (like Jade Idol crapping over any control/attrition decks) and so they have to create one card solutions to those (Geist, Steamcleaner, Theotar, Dirty Rat). And since for 10 years Team 5 only created more or those cards and solution to them we can only expect more in the future.

@@sathrielsatanson666 decks that run 2 copies of steam cleaner are actively better without those 2 copies. Most people might put tech cards like that in a E.T.C so you can see them coming easily. Dirty Rat and Theotar are two completely different cards, you use them to pull out a combo piece or key card to a deck, like a questline reward, or a Brann, but they don’t completely shut those decks off, you can win games as questline Warlock without Tamsin, you can win games as Highlander Warrior without Brann, especially in wild with Zeph, OG Reno, and Dragonqueen. The only ‘no button’ card ever printed is Geist, and as I mentioned, many Hearthstone KZfaqrs and streamers expressed disdain towards this design philosophy of printing cards with the sole purpose of killing an archetype, the death of attrition decks has had a mostly positive impact on Hearthstone. Many players felt tilted against these kinds of decks where the entire win condition was fatigue. Control decks nowadays run a win condition, Odyn, Brann, Mograine, etc. and they can still beat Jade’s. It might be an unfavorable matchup but that’s kinda the ideal outcome for card games; to have diversity.

⁠​⁠@@sathrielsatanson666running two copies of steam cleaner is just plain bad, most players run techy cards like that in E.T.C, therefore you can easily see it coming, especially if it’s on curve. Theotar and Dirty Rat are completely different cards that Geist and Steamcleaner, you use Theotar/Dirty Rat to pull out key pieces to a deck, like a questline reward, or a good battlecry card, a highlander payoff, or just as disruption in general. The difference is, you can still win games as questline Warlock without Tamsin, you can still win games as Highlander Warrior without Deepminer Brann. As I mentioned previously, Geist has been the only exception as a ‘no button’ card with little to no counter play, and many Hearthstone content creators felt like this design philosophy was flawed. The idea of a singular card killing an entire deck archetype has and will always be looked down upon as it should be.

The only counter to highlander was the plague, so there was 1/11 classes that could so something about it. The change doesnt affect much more than being able to play highlander cards in non-highlander decks

@@mantafking1505to be fair before the nerf plague death knight was played a lot to counter highlander. any time i would queue up for a match with my highlander deck its almost as if plague was magnetically attracted against me and i would play against plague dk all the time. this new change is pretty good because your entire deck isn’t just made obsolete by them shuffling cards into your deck

Plus I don't think the Pandemic was purposefully spread, at least not initially. There were instigators and malicious players, but they came much later when it had spread out of control and were doing griefing outside of the dungeon.

A strong card can be nerfed for being too strong, see Brann and Reno. Has nothing to do with the lack of Highlander hosers. “This card is too strong” is a good reason to nerf a card. “I cant cheese this deck with plagues anymore” is not. Those cards were warping against non-Plague decks even before the DK change, and their nerfs are justified independent of it. Theres a difference between Rat, a card with wide usage, and a card that specifically says “If your opponent is playing this specific archetype, their payoffs don’t work.” Also, rat can be fun when it gives you an edge in some matchups, but its boring when finding it and hitting the right thing is the only way to win vs a deck. Thats a bit how Wild is at the moment, which is why todays vid was Standard.

I think I'd like this. Many of these cards were printed (mostly Albatross and bomb warrior) with mostly the intent to gum up these sort of cards. I get that in Standard it's much harder to deal with plagues. That, and that the change was mostly to stop non-HL decks from abusing Reno, but in Wild I'd rather cards like Albatross (and steamcleaner/geist as answers) keep their already narrow niches. Plus I doubt most cycle heavy Wild decks care to wait until 8-9 mana so I think that won't be an issue if reverted. Keep in mind these cards often come with subpar stats and cost, so most midrange/control decks running them are often paying in card quality.
