Why doesn’t the BBC offer Ruth Watson a big amount of money and bring her back. She is outstanding. She is a beautiful, intelligent, practical and sensible. I wish I could meet her one day. If she goes on a speaking tour in America, she would sell out.

I think in some cases paint would help, but no one reaches for the can and troller.. no one gets a power washer or learns how to do the work. Do something, it’s not rocket science. KZfaq it and DIY something. They’re not royalty, get your hands dirty. Recruit friends and let them stay there in exchange for some help. They act like they’re in a bubble. No one is limited by pain. So what’s holding them back?

I was a bit taken-aback with Chris’ attitude toward camping out at Kelly house when he said he was put out with not reaping the benefits. It’s like he has dollar signs in his eyes and perhaps an unhealthy interest in this house when he is not a part of the family. I would take care to form a contract with him in the event he demands a portion of it if he puts revenue in it, or else he could cause legal trouble later on. He is only a boyfriend, not so much in love with perhaps more than the thought of what he has to gain out of it. 👀 A hint to the wise is sufficient. Owner beware.

This program is from 2010 and you are posting in 2023. If you had bothered to do the most basic modicum of research you would know that Sophie and Chris are now married and they have really turned the house around with a successful B&B on site. I suggest in the future, you take some initiative to answer your questions instead of judging others motives and spreading doubt. No need to be a hater.

The original comment is a cautionary tale that everyone in this situation should heed. I myself am about to find myself in this exact situation and making sure that my daughter’s boyfriend doesn’t pose a problem in the event they don’t get married. They won’t be paying rent and in return care for the home, pay utilities and contribute to the renovations. Not everyone is as invested as others to go to research on the people featured in these stories, it’s entertainment, not an investigation. Be kind.

Happy to read this. Riverhill was never in any serious trouble since Edward had done well for himself in finance. I was very impressed by that family. Kelly house was in a lot more danger, managing to turn that house around is more than impressive. Heath house, was that the one show where the parents weren't convinced that fair haired son was practical enough to take on the responsibility? Two brothers in their 40's?

@@wisdomseekertv yes exactly, it was also interesting that Riverhill and Kelly house seem to really run succesfull till today with the exact same business plan as in the show. I had a similar situation, in that I was trying to save a large and expensive property that needed a total renovation. I was going thru a divorce. My husband made a lot of money and we could afford our large property for 30 years. With him gone and no support money, I was on my own. The Kelly’s: The kelly girl shoulda made some of her chocolates to buy on the way out the door @ the house opening party. I would also set up a store there when they start having the tours. Get a loan, they have jobs and get the flats finished and rented. Let the mom bake some things and serve the vacationers that they rent to. I saved my large property and am making almost as much money as my husband allowed me monthly to pay bills and keep the property up. The property looks gorgeous and I no longer must sell or leave the property, unless I want to.

There is nothing stopping them from taking on lodgers willing to work for their keep. And local schools willing to use Kelly house as a tradespersons training ground. They could also grant a small percentage of the title to the town in exchange for help. And although run down, it is still beautiful. The county might grant temporary permission for 20 airnbn tiny houses along the outskirts of the great lawn, on the promise that 100 percent of the proceeds go to the restoration, with a portion of proceeds to the town, and a portion of the ownership to the Town. There are so many creative solutions rather than just let a, property decay. My father and my uncle did this, and we lost everything in the end. My grandparents would have been devastated

The great thing about England is that so much of their imperialist wealth was put into incredibly beautiful architecture. The bad thing about England is that the descendants of many of the hardworking imperialists have no idea that houses require constant care, or they fall down. The denial of this man is absolutely incredible. On the surface, it looks like laziness, but I think it really borders on a serious mental issue.

Energy isn't likely to get less expensive. Fusion is far from a reality and doesn't even break even yet. It has to be able to deliver far more output than input by a ratio of at least 35 to 1 for it to compete with oil - the cheapest overall. At present the European reactor ITER doesn't yield more than about 500 mw to the 800mw plus needed to turn it on.. Tiny house living is very appealing if you don't have to spend all your time in them and have the ability to add spaces seasonally as required. Many tiny house owners do that with temporary structures that don't cost much. These great houses always required tenant farmer rents to exist at all. Most don't seem to have their estates so tenant farming is out of the question. They were usually sold off decades ago for them to last as long as they have. But tiny houses that can be moved easier than the so called mobile home might be a good match for these great houses. Mobile homes aren't very mobile actually. A TH 'really doesn't need the infrastructure required for a subdivision in as much as they don't require full size lots. Their small volume makes them energy efficient. They require small amounts of electrical power and water and have their own waste water holding tanks. A large ganged holding tank might do for a cluster. The family could make the big house a kind of village center and dedicate the grand rooms to more public use like a private club. The owners could live in an apartment on an upper floor or wing. If they had renters who appreciated the setting it could be very satisfying for all involved. Otherwise how many wedding venues, holiday homes etc can the town, county or country support? There would be an endless appetite for small, low cost, energy efficient housing. And they are not permanent structures and could actually shop around for the best rents if there were enough options available to them or they moved them where employment was available. They could be clustered to create a village or villages within the estate within the larger village or town. The idea that people volunteer to keep the old place alive is a stretch, even an abuse of generosity (and very British I guess) but having "volunteers" in exchange for a rental site discount isn't so unreasonable. And it would work better than selling the estate to some developer who will want to amortize his debt quickly and require large lot rents to do so. Existing owners only have to recoup operating expenses. It might be the death of the private domain dear to these owners but it would be a better use than trying to preserve the life styles of yesterday. These great houses are all guaranteed money pits and always live on borrowed time. I am 71 years old , never lived in one place expect for the past 35 years in one house, and can't understand people who must have a home town, let alone a home estate. I would probably move again if it wasn't such a chore to sell out, cash out and find someplace I could afford. In as much as my next home will be a grave of unspecified size, dying on a private estate with a place to put my bones (if only in an urn) would be a nice amenity they could also provide as well. That goes so well with the idea these old house were supposed to last forever.

They don't own the house. The house owns them. They are slaves to a house. It's too much for one person.

I've seen enough abandoned castles, mansions etc.on KZfaq, no money for upkeep after the money went thru generations of takers and not out earning. Eventually it gets to where they can't afford the taxes, much less the work on the grounds. Nature starts to take it all really quick. Some of these places still all the furniture. Would hate to see that happen to these mansions.

it's dumb to let all of the land get sold to keep a house that can be rebuilt.
