Hi Daniel, Many thanks for your excellent video. You solved the problem of my non-starting Renaullt for me. My car is the RX4 Megane but it seemed the same as the Clio you describe. I cleaned the TDC sensor and the car started intantly. Thanks again.

Excellent advice made the job of extracting the sensor very easy,many thanks. My sensor was still ok magnetically so cleaned it with WD40 and refitted and car started first time, unlike the night before.

Hi Just sorted out my non-starting issue, watched your video and decided to try cleaning up the TDC sensor, had trouble finding it at first but after you pointed it out I was able to find and remove it. Cleaned it up with wet & dry, finished with white spirit to remove the fillings, put it back onto the clio and it fired up first time. Many thanks for your help.

Wow i like this video !!! I'v fixed my own cars for years but have lost my way with diagnosing engine problems since the introduction of sensors. My 1.2 Clio would not start when the engine was warm. After watching this video I took my crankshaft sensor off and there was no magnetic field to it. So I cleaned it and had it hanging on the bonnet. Put it back on and car starts first time every time, no mater how many journey's. Over the next month I will be giving my car a full service and without watching this video I would have encountered many problems with no idea how to fix. The ignition key out of sink for example would have had me puzzled. Mechanics has sure moved on and thanks to Barry I can continue to save my self ££££££££££££££. Thank You Barry

@ Help Yourself: THX, it helped me with the immobilizer problem! I replaced the sensor for crankshaft - after battery was disconeted car will "loose" memory with the key. Press button for 5 seconds worked! 1A solution, thank you again!

This video saved me ! Had problems month and month. Two garage's tried to fix it ( one even is an official Renault dealer !) In my case the sensor was not that dirty, but a few metal particles stick to it. Since it's a magnetic sensor, this could be a reason for malfunctioning. The whole 'repair' took less than 5 minutes. 8 weeks ago, now. Starts and runs like a charme. Freeze nor moist could prevent this. Very happy !!!

how to fix your car, "Okay" edition.

The sensor is basically a rod magnet with a coil of wire around it, just like a guitar pickup. The teeth on the flywheel below the sensor cause pulses in the magnetic field and thus induce pulses of electricity in the surrounding coil. I just cleaned the connection contacts with switch cleaner and then used a dremell sanding tool to clean the end of the magnet to a shiny finish. Works perfectly again.

Thank you I will try just that the crank shaker because the coil had just been replaced a few months back and I haven’t been using the car ever since because I bought a new Sandero so have been riding that.

I had assumed the problem was the immobiliser and so far no luck getting it sorted so I hope this might help me find a fix. But! My central locking key is broken (been using the spare); would I need a new one in order to restart the car once the crank sensor etc has been replaced? Many thanks

Hello to all, I have the same problem on a Renault Thalia 2008 D4F 728, the problem was the oi vapor breather pipe, water condensed in it and when I started in the morning caused bad start or engine cutt-off, solution, pluged the pipe on the pressure sensor side , and let the oil vapors to go in to the admission by the air filter and butterfly valve. Now it starts great , sparkplugs are light brown not blackend like before, the only problem, that condensation water affected compression on cylinder 4 near the timing belt, I'll recheck the compression after 1000 km.

Having the same problem, replacing the sensor didn't solve it. An ODB ready was plugged in to diagnose the fault, but the ECU is keeps crashing the reader preventing the reader picking up anything. Dont think the engine is gone because the engine is still kicking but just not starting. I havent tried changing the coil though

Nearly all these cars suffer with problems with their bci units especially ones with sunroofs. Water runs down n/s pillar onto fuse box & bci. Take it out dry it& see. It will play havoc with all electronics on the car& send you up the garden path. Anything intermittent is normally this problem. Trust me I’m a mechanic 😇

If I am sitting in traffic for a long period of time and not moving or moving very slowly in traffic the car just cuts out. At times it has taken several attempts over 15 minuets to start the car back up. Would this work for my car?

Hi I've got a mk2 clio T reg now the engine starts but it quickly drops below idle and stalls, now it does this alot, it may be the single point injection or possibly an air blockage. When it starts there is a strong smell of petrol, it starts everytime but cuts out after dropping to idle. I'm just looking for ideas and help to issue before removing the SPI single point injector, my guess would be an air blockage but if you have any ideas I'll be happy to take note Thanks

What exactly did your car do when trying to start it,were there any codes? I'm trying to repair neighbours 2004 clio 1.2. It would turn over about three times then it would just cut off and the immobiliser light would stay on solid. Only fault code on car was for o2 heater circuit short circuit.Checked all supplies to o2 they were good,but o2 graphing on my scan tool show o2 wasn't fluctuating between 200mv and 900mv like it should. Said sod it and replaced o2,cleared eml light with scan tool and all was good,however,this was nothing to do with non start issue,for this I cleaned,tested all relays,fuses etc and it started?? So three days went by and eml light stayed off and car started all the time,then today sodding eml light again,'and' the same o2 heater circuit code,wtf?? And,as a little Brucie bonus a knock sensor fault suddenly appeared too!,short circuit to positive,oh joy! This car had no running issues at all,just the non starting and o2 code.

I hope you can help me my passenger side needs an engine mount ,but no matter where i go, i can't get one to fit the holes on the gearbox, i'm assuming the gearbox must have been changed, at some point do you know what, gearbox would be most likely to go on to a renault megane coupe 1.4 cc 16 valve dynamic, year 2001,mk1, i even went to renault, i gave them ,the reg of my car and the year, all they're specs, but the mount they gave me did not fit, the holes seem to be a tighter cluster ,could you show me your engine mount on a clio, and see if maybe it was a clio gearbox, do you know if a clio gearbox would fit, hope you can help mate.

The crank sensor you are replacing, will always have magnetism. OK? It's the coil inside that breaks. OK?

If your Clio dont start in very hot weather it could be the Relay Switch if you have a strong soldering iron Re solder all the joints before any of this NOTE this is where some Relays are manufactured on a printed curcuit pad re a HOND Engine on a ROVER CAR it happened to me CLIOs dont use flat relays so its not a problem with Renault

Problem started a few days ago .called into shop on way home .back in car wouldn't start just turned over .waggled the ht leads a few minutes later it started but as soon as I took my foot of gas it cut out .managed to get it home drive and a tow .now it won't start at all .no lights on just turns over .do you think it's the same sensor Problem cheers 🍻

I have the same problem, when I turn the ignition over it makes a clicking noise down in the passenger side foot well. After about 30 times of doing this the car tries to turn over but it won, t, but at this point if I leave it fo 30 seconds it starts straight up, do you know what this could be please

Hi mate my clio cranks but wont start i sprayed easy start in the air pipe and its starts and then stops what would you think it is i really need help please thanks could it be this senser which you are cleaning.

Daniel mentions after you do work on a car you enter the key turn it but not all the way then press the key down for at least 5 secs and it will re sink I may have that problem once or twice reason being the batter y was dissconected and the key has to be re sinked

My 98 renault clio runs great for a while and then will just die, sometimes in the middle of a junction, and usually when slowing down. That begins a cycle of it doing the same thing but when I take it to the garage, lo and behold, it behaves! Three times this has happened and it is so frustrating. The first time they replaced the crankshaft sensor and it ran for a while before doing it again. The second time they could find nothing so I asked them to replace the oil and filters as it was a bit dark. After that it was fine for a while but then started it again. For the third time they could find nothing wrong and I am beginning to think they doubt my sanity! The last time they kept it in and the mechanic used it as his own for a few days but still it behaved. Yesterday, every time I turned on the engine the mileometer read 00000 and showed an oil warning light, but as it had recently been sorted, it can't be that. Then today I went to start it and it is dead again. Please help!

I have an clio MK2 automatic gearbox, I have not been able to change the crankshaft sensor beacuse its so out of reach behind hoses and such I cant even see it (opposed to the manual gear that is as easy as changing a tire). Is there any trick/hack for changing the sensor on an automatic MK2?

hi mate I have a clio 1.2 16v it sometimes goes as if the battery is flat all dash lights light up fine but then nothing not even a clicking noise from starter nothing, other times it will start turning over for a second or 2 and then stop dead do it again and it will keep doing the same turn over for a second or 2 then stop. I will try cleaning all connections to the starter tomorrow and check the earth strap on the engine as I've beem told it could also be that. do you have any other ideas please car is a 2002 model thank you.

My Nissan NP200 panel van is not giving spark, I changed the crank sensor, all the fuses, relays. Checked the computer box but it just cranks and does not start...

i have a 52 plate renault clio mk2 1.2 16v i was driving it it was all fine then i went to drop it down to second gear took my foot off the clutch and my accelerator wasnt working so i couldnt drive the car it would start but just die like its no petrol going through i checked the pump and cleaned the throttle body and its still the same the light with swirling lines like heater plug lights for a desil came on but when i checked the symbol on the internet it says its something to do with my injection computer or automatic transmision any ideas

Wish you was somewhere near me. I am having intermittent starting problems with my MK3 Clio dynamique.All the mechanics are pusssies and have been shying away from tackling the job. I have replaced my plugs which was dirty. I have been told so many possible things that can be wrong, but no one wants to take the time to look at it . It is in really good nick for its age and has a service history. I am so frustrated with how lazy these mechanics are nowadays. I had an electrican come out a fe month back. Even though he had managed to get it started he could not find the fault. I was told no codes where found, I do not have any warning signals on the dash. I am so annoyed . I am still contending with the fault. Renaults is taking the piss with charging £100 an hour to diagnose the fault :(
