This video is a job we did to repair a damaged hydraulic cylinder for a Caterpillar 16H Motor Grader articulating cylinder. The piston, bolt and nut are stuck inside the cylinder barrel and caused a bit of damage to the cylinder barrel and rod, so we need to replace the barrel and repair the threads on the rod. First we cut off the oil port on the cylinder barrel, then set up in our lathe and machine off the weld to remove the barrel end. We then make the new barrel which includes drilling the oil port, machining for weld prep, cutting an internal thread and welding the oil port and end cap on to the barrel. We finish off the repair by hand tapping the internal thread on the cylinder rod.
In this video we are using:
- BM-63VE Milling machine
- TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Thread cutting on a lathe still seems like a dark art to me. I'm astonished how easy you make everything look.
@HotForgeChaos
@HotForgeChaos Жыл бұрын
Its easier than it looks. His lathe looks like it has auto shut off at the end of the thread so that makes that bit easier, normally you'd have to be pretty quick on the stop button or lever, digital readouts also make life easier, I've done a little bit of threadcutting on a lathe, good skill to learn. We did 95% of our work on the CNC lathe though, that shit was beyond me, CNC computers confuse the shit out of me
@henrydando
@henrydando Жыл бұрын
once you get the hang of it its not too hard. Basically, you using some method to connect the spindle to the movement of the caridge, for example in this video he cut a 12TPI thread so for every one turn of the spindle of the lathe, the threading system on the lathe moves the caridge 1/12 of an inch. You use a form tool to get the right thread shape

I’m amazed at what CNC can do. I’m even more amazed at how ridiculously complicated the software is. It’s a computer FFS - software should not make jobs more complicated than they already are.

The thing I like most about your channel is you explain what's needed then get to the machining. Other channels go into such excruciating detail about how they go about setting up a job, clamping it down, dialing it in, why this will work & why that won't, etc. Which is fine if that's what the viewer is into, however, I'm not a machinist and never will be but I'm always curious as to how a technical machining job is accomplished, which you do to perfection. Thanks!

@from the dark side of the moon Its never too cold to grill or run a smoker dude. I've dug my grills and smoker out of 2 to 5 feet of snow and had ribs, brisket, steak, or anything off a grill and even done it for New Years parties with friends. Winter clothes and learning to control temp is key but beyond that fuck it, no amount of white bullshits gonna stop me from enjoying a steak. I have grown up in both the PNW and also Southern US, its all season weather to run your grill if you prepare and plan accordingly. My parents are from Massachusetts so there is no such thing as too much snow and too cold to run a grill, As my parents said "we bought you heavy clothes for a reason, go put them fuckers on and learn how to cook in all weather." Who fucken says you can't put it on for half hour or so and cook a nice ass grilled piece of meat. It all comes with learning when to give fucks and when to not give a fuck.

Watching 4 of your videos at the same time. I'm going to trade school to be a toolmaker, but it was machining that started me in the trade. I appreciate your large lathes and the unique setups like turning between two lathe chucks. I also appreciate the Mrs. excellent camera work. Keep up the good work my friends!

Someone must have worked on this cyl before. I know that Cat torques these bolts to several hundreds of foot pounds of torque. They don’t just screw out by themselves. I am amazed that you repair these cylinders with the same methods that I had to come up with by myself fifty years ago. You do a great job. And I can tell that, like me ,you enjoy what you do. Keep the work up and the videos coming.

The bolt holds the piston to the piston rod so it was always inside the cylinder. It just came lose and made a mess out of the piston when they tried closing it.

Growing up everyone was so afraid of our shop dogs Hooker and Hashbrown but all I remember is them being so loving and Hash would bark at me if I climbed up on any of the equipment or climbed over the back fence. She was always telling on me! But sooo sweet. Unless you are a coyote, cat. Then she was not so nice.

Your Safety Officer is adorable, probably my favourite type of dog (Don't tell our Cairn, love him too lol) and so often misunderstood. With the right upbringing I say even a Dingo or a Hyena could be as loving as a staffie or "pit". Makes me smile so much seeing a doggo happy and in their element (bull breeds suit engineering type environments super well too IMO, they're tough enough to brush off the odd mistake & clever enough to learn from others not to make mistakes too plus they seem to take a genuine interest in what the pack leader is up to. Safety Officer is an ideal post!)

What I used to do to our Rottweilers who loved to pull on stuff you held on to. I would make a squeeky noise and run my fingers down the toy until it just tickled his nose. Oh Boy would he growl and get upset and shake his head real hard. He loved it!! We had 3 . 2 girls and a 145 lb flat headed boy. Nothing ever left the yard. Such great dogs!
