If you just want to see how to remove a white key, skip to 2:43
To see how to fit a new white key, skip to 5:05
There are various videos out there showing how to do this, but often they don't show the "official" way described in the Yamaha service manuals
PLEASE do look up the service manual for your model online as it will save you a lot of time when taking the cover off the piano - which screws to undo etc. Also for some models (e.g. P80, P90, P500 and others) there may be additional things you need to do such as removing an additional set of screws so as to gain proper access to the keyboard assembly/keys. DO CHECK THE SERVICE MANUAL!
At 4:15 I decide to clean out the old grease and a load of dirt. You may feel this step not worth the bother
This method should work I believe on models P60, P80, P90, P120, P140, P155, P200 and P250 among others including many from the CLP and CVP ranges dating from around 2003 to 2013. See note above regarding P80/P90/P500 (i.e. check the service manual for extra steps that may be needed)
There are also some helpful suggestions in the comments below
I'm not entirely sure what the problem with the old key was but I suspect it had been knocked and was slightly deformed/damaged as a result. Certainly it seemed to lean over to the left as you can see at around 1:20 in the video

This video deserves a like and comment. Followed instructions to fix a 2002 Yamaha P120. Downloaded free service manual from web search. Ended up having to remove the keybed in this specific repair. Whole time for repair with cleanup took about an hour.

Many thanks for this. Very helpful. Downloading the service guide (freely available on the web) was a big help as I only needed to remove four screws on the bottom to get the top cover off. On the P500 it was necessary to remove the 9 or so screws at the back of the keypad so that I could slip it back a quarter of an inch and then remove the keys. Without doing this there was too little space to get the front of the key unhooked. On my sticking key it turned out a small piece of plastic on the back of the key had broken off. I used another tip someone offered which was to glue it back with superglue and then add a thin strip of plastic (credit card thickness) on the side to give extra strength. This seems to work well.

Great video, thanks for making this. I used it to remove a paperclip from a P-140 that had fallen between keys and was preventing them from working correctly.

ONE THING MISSING FROM EVERY VIDEO I WATCHED : It is very easy to do if you remove the screws holding the key assembly to the chassis. I have a P90 and struggled for hours trying to get the keys back on. Once I removed 11 additional screws on the bottom near the hammers, it was a piece of cake. Luckily I didn't break any keys taking them off!

Yes worth checking the service manual for your model. On the P-140 access to the keys is straightforward without needing to detach the key assembly from the chassis
@russdedini1089
@russdedini1089 5 жыл бұрын
thanks for this video-- pretty straightforward. Caution that one of the bottom screws actually isn't securing bottom to the top part of the chasis, but rather holding a circuit board in place internally. So as the author says, check reference manual if you can find it to identify which screw (talking about a P155 circa 2013)

For Yamaha P80 you actually need to remove an additional set of screws so you can slide the keyboard back a bit to remove the white key easily.

This video was was really helpful, many of the keys of my clarinova CLP 120 have been sticky for years after my brother spilled something on it 😡. For years I thought it would be super difficult to fix, but with the combination of the service manual and this video I finally managed to get the keys clean, they're now a bit loose so wondering if I did something wrong there, but they keys now all work and play independently which is a huge improvement
@gileskennedy

Possibly you had the infamous "sticky keys" problem where the grease they used reacted with the plastic key material and creased a horrible goo. I thought someone had spilt something on my P-120 but eventually realised they hadn't! The keys do get a bit looser with use BTW, bit like a real piano (but less durable of course)
@jameswills2205
@jameswills2205 4 жыл бұрын
@@gileskennedy thanks for the reply! pretty sure it was something spilled on the piano as it wasn't all the keys, just some of them, and it was a gritty substance that had pretty much glued a couple of the keys together. Also worked out that I hadn't quite clicked the keys in place properly which is why they're were loose, which is now fixed and it plays like a dream!

Was a new key necessary? Couldn't the old one have simply been cleaned? I was surprised how much they key was off-centre; had it warped for some reason? I have a couple of keys on my P140 to unstick so thanks for the video.
@gileskennedy
@gileskennedy 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the key must have been knocked hard and something must have been deformed. I couldn't see exactly what the problem with it was though so a new key was an easy fix. Sometimes just swapping the key with another helps but you might just be storing up trouble for the future. However you might not be too fussed about behaviour of the top A on the keyboard for example
@JonRowlison
@JonRowlison 2 жыл бұрын
Was the key itself damaged or was there just some "crud" in the channel where it sits? The video never really says what the problem was, but you cleaned something and put in a brand new key... could you have put the old key back in and it would work?

Is it anyhow possible to adjust the feedback (softness) of whole keyboard? I've heard, that Yamaha's are know for being too hard and when I tried my friends' Roland, my timing issues were suddenly gone :)
@gileskennedy

If you mean the weight/feel of the keys then no. (There is a touch sensitivity option on some models, but this only changes the sound not the weight, although it has a subtle affect on the perceived feel too.) The feel of the action of acoustic pianos varies widely (or wildly); generally I find digitals have a lighter feel, probably because you are moving less "stuff"/mass around - there is just the key and maybe one or two small levers, you aren't imparting energy/momentum to a whole system of levers and parts including the hammer. Probably I wouldn't like the Roland if it has a very light feel because I mostly play acoustic. If you are having trouble controlling a Yamaha you just need to practise more to develop more control, and probably deploy a little arm weight as well (arm weight "behind" each finger)

@gileskennedy
@gileskennedy 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like the famous “sticky keys” problem which my P120 had. Look it up online. It was cause by the lubricating grease reacting with the plastic keys and turning into a sticky substance. I just took the whole keyboard assembly out and gave it all a good clean. It’s been OK since then

Look up northmusic on eBay, they seem to be largely out of stock at the moment but may be able to help if you contact them. Or buy and old/trashed P6 / P80 / P90 / P120 / P140 / P155 / P200 / P250 or any with the same keys on eBay and raid it for parts. In the meantime you could swap round the problematic D E and A with ones from right at the top or bottom of the keyboard and you might find they work well enough on infrequently used notes

You said "make sure you unhook it from the front," but what does that mean? How do you unhook it?
@gileskennedy
@gileskennedy 5 жыл бұрын
If you try and do it it will be pretty obvious. When you have released the back of the key as shown 3:35 it may still be partially attached at the front. You will be able to feel that. Gently ease it towards you and up/out and you should feel it come free. It's the reverse of hooking the key back on - see 5:05

Hard to say much without seeing it. Did you get hold of the service manual? The “glue” may be the (in)famous sticky keys problem where the grease reacted with the plastic. It shouldn’t stop the key coming out though. Yes you will need to pull it forward a small amount. Try another key to get the feel of it in case the one is not releasing properly. Or push it back into position and try again. If you’ve not already tried those steps

Why is the technology that goes into these keyboards so lame? You buy expensive ones with the GS keys and they get sticky. You buy a cheap one with GHS keys and they get screwed up even sooner. This is so annoying.

Serious question: Why do so many of you Brits pronounce the first syllable in "Yamaha" with a short "a," as in "ham"? After all, Brits pronounce "tomato" as "toh-MAH-toh." Similarly, Yamaha should be pronounced "YAH-muh-ha."
