So helpful. Thank you very much. I'm working with a class of adults who are living with disability. It's our first block of classes and I so want them to have good things to take home. Really good to have this video just in case. 😊

Wow , thanks , that video saved me ! I was cleaning up a really nice box I made and handled it carelessly and the wall broke out of the box. It’s fairly green box still , was drying for two days , so , I think the repair looks promising. Though , I don’t even have a kiln yet lol , hoping to get one this fall. Thanks again !!!

once the pottery was at the stage at the end of this video, did you cover the piece in plastic to let it dry all the way? if so, how long did you keep it in plastic? how long should the piece dry before it can be fired
@TrifireStudios
@TrifireStudios 3 жыл бұрын
For broken green ware (bone dry), I would leave out of plastic til the whole surface is ashen and uniform. The trick with this is the slow dry process. I periodically spray the piece, 2 mist sprays, to very slowly bring the piece back to a bone dry consistency. 3+ days of dry time under low humidity. It is all about understanding the release of moisture from the clay back to the atmosphere. Lots of things change dry times. I hope to do more videos on this once I am allowed to go back to the studio.

I have a lion face that I took off the bottom post of a banister from the early 1900s. It looked like wood, but it turns out it's clay. 2 small pieces broke off. I was going to glue them back together with super glue, but when I ran it under warm water to try to clean it up, the clay started rehydrating and having a tacky surface. Should I attempt to fix it this way, or should I just wait for it to dry, and glue it? I don't know much about clay other than what I learned in art class in 4th grade, but is there a way I can bake it in a toaster oven to make it completely dry so getting it wet won't start to rehydrate it anymore?

Short answer: No, I would use epoxy and incase the area to create a waterproof seal. Clay has to be fired to 1600^F to set properly. Let me know if you have more questions.

hello this can work for a slow cooker?
@TrifireStudios
@TrifireStudios 3 жыл бұрын
No, this is for pre-fired ceramics, and a slow-cooker is used with food there is not a way to repair it without firing. With that size of a piece you should start over if making from scratch. This is due to the level of thickness that you will need to build in the clay to meet the heating requirements of the vessel.

Can you fix broken ceramic after it's been fired with clay or does it have to be glued together ?
@TrifireStudios
@TrifireStudios 5 ай бұрын
It depends on where the break is. If it can support itself and you are rebinding, then you can use glaze. Check out my glazing videos for a walk through. ✌🏻

Can this technique room with air dry clay
@TrifireStudios
@TrifireStudios Жыл бұрын
Sadly no, once air dry clay is dried out then it is done at that point. You should use glue, like e-6000, as this will dry clear and have a nice finish.

If the piece is holding together fine, you should be good. But I would candle the kiln to make sure the piece is bone-dry pre firing.

Vinegar works great.

Agreed. Make some thick/creamy slip using ground up dried clay and white vinegar. Soften surfaces to be joined using neat vinegar, score surfaces to be joined, apply generous layer of vinegar slip to both surfaces, bring together, scrape off the 'oozing excess', smooth with a little neat vinegar on fingertips. Treat with care. Allow to dry. Fire as usual.

I had a student that was unable to use vinegar and it provided a better teaching point for students to understand how water and clay work.

Ohhhh wonderful video! I wish you would do a series of "All things Clay"! I have a clay sculpture that is 19" tall. I am trying to let it dry but the base keeps getting horizontal cracks. I scrap and rewet and fill the cracks but they keep coming back.
