I just bought a brand new generator and the plastic petcock leaked. I found this video and a replacement o-ring and was able to make it stop leaking. Thanks for the instructions.

Really good info! I don't know how many fuel shutoff valves I've thrown away & replaced over the years. I'll definitely try this next time, thanks for posting!

Thanks for the tip! I just installed a brand new one of these today and it leaked right through the body like there isn't even an oring there! I didn't bother taking it apart since it's going back to the store tomorrow, but I will remember this for next time! Thanks again!

Thanks a lot! saved me time, frustration, and anger on testing all of the three of this new plastic petcocks. Mine took a little muscle to remove since I have to put the body of the valve to the vice (diff type not 90) but it came off with a pair of good pliers. You made it so easy that I though I don't need a vice.

Very helpful video, thanks. I got a valve from a “parts” snowblower. The shutoff valve did not leak but very stiff to turn. Suspect valve is approx 15 years old based on production date stamp on rubber fuel hose (those components still in good condition). Found your video and decided to try to see what could be done with the valve. Oring (blue) and shutoff “washer” in good condition. Reassembled without them in-place and still stiff to turn so confirmed it was the contacting plastic surfaces within the bonnet (handle side of oring) that were the issue. Reassembled using silicone grease on those contacting surfaces (none intentionally on oring). Reassembled with original oring/washer and works much smoother now. A couple of suggestions; > I put a short section of old hose on the outlet end that is held in the vice, saves harming the plastic barbs >> also afterwards that connection had to be reshaped as it had gotten a bit out-of-round from the vice > I made sure the handle/stem went back in the same orientation as it came out (ie. make sure it is NOT turned 180 deg when reinstalled) just in case that would affect reassembly or its operation

Nice repair and great way to fix it. The only problem I see is with the material in which the o ring is made of. It must be rated to handle petroleum products. So not just any o ring will suffice.

Awesome, I would've never thought to try and fix the thing (it's plastic, after all.) I guess even plastic parts can be rebuilt sometimes. I had one fail on a Murray lawnmower once, and it spilled a tank full of gas in my garage. Thank goodness I had an electric water heater instead of a gas-fired one, you know? Thanks again for another slick fix and video.

I'm happy you enjoyed it. I have had them leak a full tank as well. My water heater is in my basement luckily.

My problem involves ethanol fuel and that it destroys the plastics that attaches to the fuel line. After a few years it breaks either the in/out part of the valve. But I do appreciate your repair to the O ring.

You are welcome I thought this could help out someone. These valves need attention at some point. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Can you explain why my fuel feed has trickled down to next to nothing, using a shut-off valve, where before it was installed, the fuel ran like a river. These are brand new valves, and I tried two of them, and both did the same thing. It refuses to keep the fuel supply up within the proper float level area, thus engine is starving for needed fuel, and is now surging and every so often dies out.

Interesting as I just bought one of these for the Power Smart snow blower I purchased less than cheap. I'll update you on how it works this winter. Something I noticed was the use of oil to lube the O ring, just thinking and maybe I'm wrong but I thought silicon with the O ring well coated inside and out then installed would be better than oil? I don't know how silicon holds up to gasoline but it would take care of the rubber better. I think? Only guessing here...

Curiosity I like the idea of silicon - gas shouldn’t mix with it - another thought is using wax like from a “ toilet wax ring “ - I use it for a lot of things - ( putting it on threads of a bolt so it won’t rust. - ) then If possible- heat it up a little to melt the wax -

Good info my friend. Had one leaking on my Honda push mower. Sold it before I could look at the problem. Good video

The hondas use a different valve. I think that one needs to be replaced unless there are screws to access the inside of it. I will take a look at the honda valve next time I have one sitting in front of me. Take care. Bob
