Repairing a Nikon 1 J1 Camera That Won't Turn On

Picked this Nikon 1 J1 ILC mirrorless camera up at a thrift store a while ago for around $10. Lens was busted, and camera wouldn't turn on.
Thought it was a dead battery, but nope.
Turns out it's a common problem, and everybody says to replace the 'power board', but considering the cost (2-3X the $10 I paid for the camera), I wanted to see if I could fix it.
Turned out to be a very simple fix!

Can you please fix mine!!!!! I have a Nikon J2, which I have not used for a while, and the display wont show nothing, while the on/off indicator is light up, but display screen is black. would you be able to help me??

Great video!!! Thanks. I purchased one $12 dollars and will be tinkering with it. First stop will be that fuse/ resistor test!! I was wondering if you would upload the disassembly and reassembly potion of your video at normal speed...PLEASE. That's if you have that time to spare and also want to do that. Once again THANK YOU!! Any pointers to watch out for when doing that process .

I believe it was a 3 amp unit? Honestly can't remember. Given the kind of circuit, I don't think the value is that critical.

hello good from Spain 👋. I wanted to tell you I bought the camera for €2 in France in a market and it didn't work when I saw your video I disassembled it and the same thing happens. but I can't find the electronic component where I can buy help me 😫😫😫😫😫😫

Excellent result from your troubleshooting effort! There's nothing quite like the thrill when a previously-dead product springs to life after you've doe a repair! I'll mention that one other possibility for that open-circuit part is a diode. Devices that can be powered by an external DC adapter often have a diode installed in series with the DC input pin, as protection against someone connecting up a DC adapter with the incorrect polarity. If the part is a diode, it would have had some kind of polarity marking, typically a band on the cathode end. Since you never said any thing about this, I'll assume that the suspect component didn't look like a diode.

I have a local electronics store that sells them. I think I put a 3A in. You can get them on digikey, or these days amazon or ebay

did you just put a solder blob without removing the fuse?? .. it's a great video btw !

Haha, yes, yes I did! That was just to see if it was working though, a little risky, I admit, but I did check for shorts. In the end I removed the blob and put a fuse in a few days later. Thanks!

@@madaradog14 I think it was 3A? I can't remember, I couldn't tell from the original what fuse was used, so I just threw one in there. Sorry.
