Repairing a whole box of Makita power tools that were sent in for repair

This whole box of tools has been sent in from one customer for repair.
He actually sent in a whole lot more than this, including 3 paslodes, a mitre saw, 2 transformers, 2 leads, 2 compressors, and 2 bosch twin kits.
That's a lot of tools for fixing. Luckily, he was no panic to get them fixed. But thankfully, this box of makita tools was the last bunch.
The customer that sent this in for repair has several men waiting for him and also a few vans on the road. So they can go through a lot of tools.
They are also, sadly, not kind tool there tools. So this lot of makita was anything but cared for.
Water damage, drops, and general abuse are how these tools get treated.

Regarding the Drill with the stuck chuck... I accidentially left my drill outside on a roof and it was pouring rain that night. I didn't notice until a week later when i was looking for that damn drill, when i suddenly remembered and got it back from that roof. The drill was suprisingly still working, but the chuck was stuck like yours and there even was still a 10mm drillbit 'welded' to it. I turned it upside down, so the chuck faced up. I then filled it up to the brim with WD40, and left it there for about 24 hours, casually refilling it when i saw the oil sank down into the chuck. After one day, i used a regular small pliers to unstuck it, and it still works to this very day.

I’ve got a few old machines I just threw in a box in the van, thanks to your videos, I’ve ordered new springs to hold the bit for the impact gun and a new chuck for my drill that got dropped down a flight of stairs, like you say I’ve tried getting tools fixed and it is usually not far off half the price of a brand new tool so I’ve tended to just ditch them and get a new 1 but il keep these 2 as spares or give them to somebody starting out 👍🏻

I have been repairing tools as a hobby for a few years now, and came across your channel. Really great stuff and very knowledgeable. Really like the new videos where you go trough a lot of tools even if the fixes are simple. It's a great way for guys like me to find out how to fix many different machines. Also can I request a "what type of tools I recommend to buy and for what purpose" video? For example you seem to be a fan of corded and brushless tools. And a "tools of the trade" video... Meaning all the basic tools you use daily. Just an idea for a video if you've time lad 👍

Yes got that too, but not are place to judge someone else but we do it an don't even realize it and I think he throws the stuff bec he's bored of it bec he's so smart bec he's done so many of them all but he differently cares or he wouldn't be doin this as his job lol but he quit throwing everything too even know he could of told us all to shove it 😂

I worked in a Caravan manufacturing company in Australia and they would have lockers full of broken 18v dewalt, makita and milwaukee tools. Impacts, grinders, drills... every 12 months they throw 100s of them in the bin without trying to repair any. Madness!

personally i like loosening chucks with an imbus socket on my impact. that way you wont mess up the shaft nor the bearings. i use a huge one, a makita dtw1002, and have never killed any gears with it. learned so much from your channel, thanks!

Thanks for the video. Interesting what you said regarding brushless vs brushed for Angle Grinders. There's a few comments on here that you could have repaired more but I get the economics and like your fast triage and move on approach, especially if you only get paid for units repaired, not units examined.

Just a tip for the Makita duo charger: a common fault is the filter (black one after the wires here but they come in white/grey aswell) having bad solders or is even completely loose from the board. Along with the fuse this is one of the few spare parts you can order from Makita for this charger, most of the times the old one still works though. The charger being around 120 euros it's probably worth to have a look, other than that I agree not worth spending more time on unless it's a personal item rather then a customers job.

So now i feel like i could take a chance on some spares and repairs Makita and learnt a lot of valuable lessons about tool appropriateness. 21,000 tools... Are you independent? You could wire a bench power supply to a burned up battery case, and use that for testing instead of burning up your batteries.

I have to admit, outside the 2007 era batteries bricking themselves for (next to) no reason, I’ve had great luck with the Makita service centre for affordable parts, and parts diagrams to repair my own (heavily abused) tools.

I work for a small local hardware shop, doing all the repairs. They provide this service to look after thier customers and keep the tools they buy from the running for as long as possible.

There is another KZfaqr called buy it fix it that does electronics repair. I doubt the charger is a big deal but might be a good collaboration as he always seems to be looking for stuff.

Funny, my son said the same thing a few years ago. I gave him an old snack jug with lid and told him to keep the extra parts in it if he finds any after he fixes something. He got even with me by collecting nuts and bolts from everywhere and returned it 2/3rds full saying he just fixed his car, lol! I say if you don’t have extra parts you didn’t do it right😉✌🏼

I fixed a dga452 by replacing the endbell etc and the armature, the armature needed to be pressed off the housing piece and gear but it was quite cheap for me (£17 for the armature). Im in the uk

Just curious, regarding that locked up chuck. Wouldn’t soaking that in a couple/few inches of evaporust in a cup for a couple of days have worked? I would have tried that first, but I have spares to use in the meantime… Don’t you wish all tools just needed a good cleaning sometimes, although I do love the challenges myself. It’s still fun to me when taking tools apart to restore them not just repair. I prefer keeping the antiques actively working in my workshop. You definitely have quite the knowledge base, so needless to say you’ve made a sub out of me! Thanks for taking us along and sharing your expertise, after reading some comments you can believe you ARE making a difference! Merry Christmas to you and yours brother✌🏼

Thank you for the kind massage. I replace the chucks simply because they are customers tools. Soaking it will get it mixing again, but more than likely it will not lock the bit in tight enough anymore. Simply fixing the chuck will result in the customer returning again unhappy. Better in the long run to replace the chuck, as it is a working tool, the customer will need to rely on it.

If possible, record a video with a complete disassembly of the makita dhp481 gearbox. I mean the part on which the cartridge is screwed and where the impact mechanism is located. thank you

Generally I recommend makita, that's what I buy myself. But if dose also depend on what tool you want, as no brand makes all good tools.

Even if the variable speed was defective, its wouldn't be worth fixing. Cannot open the makita switch and theybarento expensive to replace on the brushed models

Once the chuck was stripped down to an extent all you need is some heat on the chuck and it’ll come right off.

Charger! Take the board out and look for dry joints? Get a thermal camera check for abnormal heat? May be that simple.

Hey dean great video in fixing a box of conundrums, I get it cordless are only short usage compared to corded, so in your experience what make is less trouble generally .I’ve always been a Bosch Professional man myself but people rave on about Milwaukee brand what do you think dean?.

Put on ear muff and let them waste as much money as they like. Stick with bosch or change to makita. Both are very good for the long term. Make sure you get brushes tools now and register them for the long warranty. Then sit back and watch all their milwaukee tools fail constantly while you work away without failures for year after year.

This is what annoys me when people say oh so you fixed this but not that. Oh your not very good at what you do then. People forget that it's got to be worth it financially for the customer to pay the amount it will cost. Otherwise there is no point. If Dean was fixing it for himself then maybe. I've always said anything can be fixed but it depends what's wrong with it to wether it's worth the time and money to do it

I’ve got a Milwaukee 3/4” impact that’s sounding rough and matching drill that’s stuck in hammer if I can send you them for repair, really hate throwing them away if they can be repaired

i know your on a timer but thought i would mention a chemical called evaporust. it can free up rusted chucks with a 20 minute soak in a cup.a. might save you some time and effort at least enough so you can remove the chuck easier.

if the only thing consistently going wrong is drawing too much current and overheating, makita should step up their cooling and current limiting games. but honestly, i barely know anything about power tools. makita's engineers probably know best.

When a consruction company uses a tool for 3 to 4 years each day and after that time it goes defect it is not bad tool. Cars and trucks and vans are much more expensive and they make troubles after 10k Kilometers..... Waranty....??
