Yeah I know the tree roots and rock help retain the soil here but I wanted grass to do that here and in order for the grass to grow well I needed to remove those items to help the grass develop good roots, like you mentioned. Thanks for watching!

Yes. Preparing the soil for sod is very similar to creating a good seed bed for seeding. Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions.

So what I gather is: 1. Use weed killer on the ENTIRE lawn. Wait for it to all die, since more then 50% of thr lawn is dead or weeds. 2. Rake it up, dispose. 3. Dig up any roots of weeds and junk that remain 4. Use garden weasel or till type thinger to cultivate dirt on entire lawn 5. Plant mixture of sun and shade seed. Sun seed will flourish quickly.but die out after a couple years, shade seed will take over at that point. 6. Water regularly. Sound about right?

@@brainsXforXshit You don't necessarily need to kill the entire lawn. Since you're just starting out it may be worth trying to seed the lawn in the fall as you will have an easier time getting seed to germinate during that time. Right now it's not a bad idea to put a weed and feed fertilizer down to start killing of some of the weeds. Then throughout this year get on a regular schedule of mowing 1-2x per week and getting 1 inch of water down on the lawn per week. You can also try to get on a monthly schedule of fertilizing following what ever the bag rate for the fertilizer you're using. It's a good idea to get these practices down before trying an entire renovation. In the fall you can then try this. 1. Use garden weasel or tiller in thin or bare areas of the lawn 2. Aerate lawn 3. Overseed with mixture of sun and shade seed. 4. Water 2-3x per day making sure the soil does not dry out. Keep the soil moist but not drenched. You don't want puddles of water. What grass type are you working with?

The Lawn Guardian It looks like I have just random weeds on the lawn with lots of bare dirt patches. The soil outside of San Antonio is rocky but I have seen some grass grow in some yards because they probably put quite of bit of soil on top of the rocks. This part of Texas isn’t as dry as you continue to go west but not as fertile as the area in and around Houston.

@@tessloneill7978 You're better off seeding bermuda or sodding St. Augustine at this point. You don't want to wait until fall to plant warm season grass.

This was actually caused from a skid steer driving in this area of the lawn and not a drainage problem. This area will likely need to be turned into a garden or rock bed of some kind in the future because it is in constant shade and on a slope so grass didn't grow thick here. @@TheLawnGuardian Yes, that is why I said you will just have to do something again to it bc of the slope and the rain run off. I have the same issue on one side of my house that is in the shade and on a slope. I use it as a path for my golf cart. I will be putting rock down on mine. If you do not use yours as a path, then you might be able to put in a terrace system. Sub to you bc you are cool and respond

@@TheLawnGuardian If you are in Denver, Colorado the market is booming. If you are where I am at in Mississippi a house will sit on the market for 2 years. Good thing about that is a house that cost 400k in Denver is 100K in Mississippi. With a mortgage of $430! My one bedroom studio in Denver was $1300 a month back in 2017.
