Repairing CRASH Damaged ABF Swapped VW Golf Mk2 16v Track Car

After over 20 years of owning this Volkswagen Golf Mk2 track car with ABF conversion running individual throttle bodies (ITBs) and standalone ECU and custom mapping, Ben has modified the car continuously over that whole period of time to make it faster and regularly taken it on track. Then at a Curborough Sprint Course sprint event last year unfortunately came off the track and sustained damage. Now we have to investigate the extent of the damage on this incredible VW Golf Mk2 track car. can we repair it?

I've learnt a huge amount being exposed to this car and Ben's knowledge and ability to overcome a problem. There's more to come in this series on this car, so hopefully we can all learn more and perhaps witness some more old school engineering methods.

Thanks James, I like a datalog and some calculations, but sometimes cardboard, string etc get the job done

@@ABF16V absolutely! The simple methods are the best! Id be interested to hear more about your engine. Im building an abf at the moment, with what sounds like similar mods- running jeveys etc.

@@Jimladvw I obviously approve, when many others would have gone 1.8t. It's trying to remember what was done, when and in what order! Starting with an easily tunable ECU enables you to try lots of different things. Maybe content for another one of these videos..

Yeah we needed to establish whether there had been structural damage before doing so, otherwise it could have been disastrous. A novel technique in determining whether the car is straight, but very effective in the absence of a jig. Keep your eyes peeled for more on this car too. 👀

It was certainly a big off and very lucky to have come out unscathed. Unfortunately for the car, not so much!

@@golfmk2at least you missed the bigger ditch further round the apex. I stuck a mini challenge car on its passenger door in there. My Mrs was mega happy with that bill lol. Dog was like... Your on your own bro

@Carl Barton ha! You've had experience yourself! Fortunately no, he missed the ditch, but still went through a fair bit of earth and it was pretty much on its side before being lowered back onto its wheels.

Yeah I also put a Corsa on it's driver door handle at molehill and hit the opposite bank thats not there now which put it back on its wheels. But that was a long time ago. Many curby stories.

Ah, this is different to the other black Golf you have seen featured in videos. That was the R32 (6 cylinder), this is Ben's 2 litre 4 cylinder highly strung beast! Quite a different machine to the other. Surgeon's scalpel vs meat cleaver!
