Welcome back to the Canada series!
In this video, we checked out some massive CAT trucks with Finning Cat up in the heart of Alberta, Canada, just north of Fort McMurray.
Our tour of their facilities and oil sands operations found us learning the ins and outs of operating, maintaining, and assembling some of the largest trucks in the world. From the impressive 798 AC and 797F models to the 797B rebuild. Hope you enjoy it!

I have become so disillusioned by content creators, but Aaron does this so right! Presenting the content with passion and no ego whatsoever! On a personal note, while I would not consider myself a dirt nerd per say, I have grown up with some amazing dirt machines and worked very hard with my father on them and our lands!

Next time you are in a shop like that one, with extremely large / heavy pieces of equipment up on jack stands, ask them what the shop floor concrete spec was when they poured it, basically how many feet thick to get the psi needed to hold up each jack stand without breaking through?

I bet its similar to any heavy manufacturing facility. Some presses and benders and stamping machines are like solid bricks of steel. Can also weigh hundreds of tons. Really big ones, the floor is built around them. Im not a concrete guy, but im sure its thick and/or heavily reinforced.

Was there in 1999. Some of the first 797's being assembled. It is my understanding that they had not officially been released by Cat. The dump bodies came as five subassemblies that had to be welded together. Then there was a stack of AR plate to be applied. The frames came in on a trailer with 128 tires. At that time Syncrude was making the transition from walking dragline/reclaimer/conveyor to shovel/truck/hydro transport. I keep hearing that this is dirty oil. Yes, what they excavate is sand, water, and bitchimen. What eventually is sent out has the sand and water removed as well as much of the sulfur and petroleum coke. At that point it is synthetic crude.

@snaggo6666
@snaggo6666 Жыл бұрын
@@carholic-sz3qv at 3:36 you can see the red trailing cable coming in between the tracks. that's a high voltage supply line (6.6kV in australia, I believe they're around 7.2kv in north america) fed from a dedicated substation (usually a sled type portable substation with multiple outlets to feed a 2 to 3 shovels) somewhere nearby on the mine site. the trailing cable enters into the carbody and feeds the onboard transformer which feeds all your travel/slew/hoist/crowd/auxiliary systems that run on 415/230V. it's always funny watching these north american spec shovels because none of them ever have cable reelers to manage their trailing cable, so you see them picking up and moving it constantly with the bucket - or having their offsider shift it in a tractor. beautiful machines but they're becoming outpaced by 'smaller' hydraulic diggers like the liebherr 9600/9800 that just have big shovels beat on cost per tonne and mine plan adaptability. loved every minute I spent working on them and it's sad to see them get cut up and shipped off to rust on foreign docks.
@devinbartley5768
@devinbartley5768 Жыл бұрын
@@carholic-sz3qv They run long electric cables (just layed on the ground) throughout the mine to the shovels. They are connected to the grid. Special considerations are taken at road crossings etc, but yeah they are just plugged into the grid. Of course it is high voltage and a number of safety considerations come into play for how they deal with cable crossings on the mine site.
@carholic-sz3qv
@carholic-sz3qv Жыл бұрын
@@devinbartley5768 how to they actually manage the cable on the ground since it has to move all the time I mean the excavator?
@kevorkian25
@kevorkian25 Жыл бұрын
@@carholic-sz3qv They will use a cable tractor or the teeth of the bucket to hook onto a metal basket to move the cable with, this is normally for short distances .They have cable stands also to float the cable high enough for the trucks to go under running it into the middle of the pit . So the haul truck operator will pick one of the sides to get loaded , normally the side the bucket is pointing towards if no truck is in the pit .

What a glorious Find~! Thanks for all the content you have created so far... and the vast possibilities of what you are bringing to awareness... Imagine if our 'educational' system was more geared towards what one was to find blissfully fulfilling... *Show & Tell; seeing the professionals that are passionate about what they are doing... and are wanting to advance it to the max! (This would reduce the time needed to focus on frivolous aspects that could be learned at one's discretion.) Fun times Ahead~!!! Imagine when we automate everything, so people can do what they truly found blissful... Doing things for others would be bound to occur more and more, less and less people would have to deal with others' suffering states (Money hungry; creating suffering by dictating how much someone is worth... instead of focusing on the amount of time and energy it took... and equate that to a new bartaring system...) But hey, we will see how bad the economy will turn in the coming months... Then hopefully we will have a new rennaisance... with all those that are here to bring more blissful moments and less on the harming of others that did not ask for such experiences... Towards more Blissful moments... for All~!!!

Changing these tires is my job. Tire costs $60-70,000 depending on the brand. Cold air pressure is 110 psi. Enough force to send you flying over 10 football fields. Well whats left of you. The reason I give that measurement is because there is a poster at my work with that description description.. well minus the "whats left of you part lol".

🤔💪🔧 While it's true that these videos showcase impressive professional work and attention to detail, it's important to consider the larger context. The focus on size comparison diagrams may provide entertainment value, but it's crucial to recognize that there are more substantial aspects to repairing the largest trucks on Earth. These machines play significant roles in industries such as mining and construction, and their maintenance involves complex technical expertise and safety considerations. Let's appreciate the efforts showcased in the videos while also acknowledging the depth and breadth of knowledge required for such challenging tasks.
