In this video, we provide a 1-month update for the repeating sparrow trap we purchased to deal with common house sparrows (English Sparrows).
This was the action we took after losing several blue birds and purple martins to pesky house sparrows.
Within 24 hours after setting up the trap, we caught five sparrows in the trap. Now, after one month, we have caught 27 female sparrows, 17 male sparrows, and 5 starlings. In addition, we have also caught several native birds which we quickly released, plus A PARAKEET!
We are keeping the parakeet! Ha Ha!
This trap was purchased at SparrowTraps.net.

I've had my trap for 1 month. Twist tie the trap entrance so it stays in the upright position for 1 week. It's very IMPORTANT that you keep the trap baited at all times. After a week the sparrows won't be trap shy. When I removed the zip tie, I caught 51 sparrows in a single day! Make sure you dispatch the birds once you get about 10 to 15 sparrows in the trap. It's less effective when the trap is overcrowded. ALWAYS leave 1 female in the trap when you take the trap back outside. Now I leave the twist tie on the trap Monday thru Thursday and constantly keep it baited. Every Friday morning, the twist tie is removed. Its incredible how effective this method is.

Thank you Jinginny, Our solution was my making a small block of 1 x trimmed to the exact shape of the entry to the elevator. Apparently the birds eye view of that obstruction caused all birds to shy away. Your idea has much merit as it keeps a larger bodied avian from entering, but is not a visual block to a sparrow. I love your parakeet story. Poor little thing. I am glad you were able to effect a rescue and a beautiful sanctuary for the little one.

When you catch one, leave it in the trap as a bait bird. We keep one male and one female in the box. Just remember to feed and water them. We also keep a pringles or tennis ball can I there for shelter. To keep large birds like doves and starlings out, place a couple tall upright screws as a gate so only smaller birds can go in. Good luck!

I bought this trap after watching your video because house sparrows have been stealing my chicken feed and driving away native birds from my garden. On the first day I caught and culled 11, and the following morning the goldfinches had returned to my garden (I plant things just for them) -on day two I saw no sparrows in the morning when I checked on the chickens and came home to three more in the trap. It’s super effective and a total game changer

I’m glad to hear that is working so well for you. Over time, you will see a significant reduction in the sparrow population and a nice return of the native and song birds. Be sure that you can identify the birds you catch before dispatching them. You don’t want to get rid of any of the good birds too. We release anything with a speckled breast and closely examine all other birds we catch. Best wishes!

I just purchased this trap, so I’m binge watching all the videos to get as much information as I can.. I have a whole bunch that have recently just taken over in my backyard. My bluebirds are still doing just fine but I’m so worried for them. My question is if I get a whole bunch trapped at one time do you need to take each bird out one by one with your hand or do you put a bag over the cage? I ordered mesh laundry bags I sought on another site or someone said that was helpful, any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.❤️

What are you using for bait? We use cheap "wild bird seed" that contains millet. it attracts lots of birds. Also, have you watch the trap to determine if it's operating as it should? Once you catch one bird, leave it in the trap since other birds will be attracted by its movement.

Cracked corn. Ziptie the trap open for 1 week so they get used to grabbing the bait.
@cw6136
@cw6136 Жыл бұрын
Popcorn and black sunflower seeds work well too. I didn't have any success until I zip tied the trap open for a week. It's important that you keep the trap baited at all times while it's zip tied open. The birds need to become acclimated to trap. I eliminated almost an entire flock in a single day after removing the zip tie

We bought this same sparrow trap several months ago. At first we caught some house sparrows. I think we have caught somewhere in the vicinity of 35 house sparrows, but it has been problematic. We have also caught some larger birds like curved beak thrshers and a blue jay or two. The worst of it has been catching mature Gambel's quail. They get greedy and get stuck in the elevator down with no escape and then we have to fish them out. I tyried using a restricting one and a half inch hole to exclude them , but then no one used it. So we will be looking elsewhere.
@jimginnyohio
@jimginnyohio 8 ай бұрын
We had a similar problem with doves entering the trap. We were able to resolve that by installing two large screws (or nails) in front of the opening. Place them about an inch and a half apart and back about an inch from the elevator opening. This gives enough room for sparrows, but too narrow for the larger birds to enter the elevator area. I hope that works for you too!

It would be better if you listed the dimensions of this trap in the video description. I can't think of any reason not to do that. Most people are probably going to want to give the sparrows and starlings "swimming lessons" and the easiest way to do that is by dropping the trap into a retired tropical fish tank.
@jimginnyohio
@jimginnyohio 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill - I didn’t list the dimensions since this isn’t a trap I make or sell. Instead, I posted a link for where people can go to get one for themselves. By going there you can view the dimensions. Thanks for your suggestions. Also, I wouldn’t suggest submersing the trap in water since it is made out of wood. That would cause the wood to rot and the metal to rust.

You need to remove that mirror if you still have the Budgie. They cause severe psychological stress to parrots because they lack the ability to recoginize their own reflection. Also get some natural perches rather than only dowels, Or else it causes foot sores and eventually arthritis. He also needs a larger cage, More toys (the bells are dangerous btw). I also will assume he is on a seed diet, Just because it's very common for people to feed them that, But he needs pellets and fresh vegetable chop daily. Seed is too high fat for them and will cause obesity. Even if you avoid the obesity it will cause fatty liver disease which can kill your bird. For pellets he should be getting Harrison's, TOP's, Or Roudybush. Seed should only make up 10% of the daily diet and it's best used as a training/foraging treat. Also avoid feeding fruit any more than twice a week, Otherwise it's too much sugar and isn't good for their digestive system. It can also lead to hormonal imbalances which is stressful on the bird.
