I really like Silk. But just for the tone shaping. I still use my own choice of compressors etc.

I find each vocal calls for different plugs, sometimes i may use several on a particular song and yet on another song, same vocalist, just 1 or 2. I like the Xvox a lot, I think it's actually one that i can say works better than all the one stop shops out there. Very well put together, but even at that, does not work on everything 😄

For me the ultimate game changer plugin was The Scheps Omni-Channel by Waves, I use it on most channels and busses and it's an extremely practical AND musical plugin, I love everything it does + it's got the most natural sounding de-esser I've ever encountered, nothing too surgical, nothing too artificial + awesome Dual Mono and M-S processing. I've even used it for mastering and man, it's fantastic, very powerful, yet musical, it's my desert island plugin. Plugins like Voca or other "one-knob" style ones are cool for rough mixes or amateur use, but they don't make you learn, which is more half the fun if you're serious about mixing.

I think the original mix was best. It has all the air and presence without sacrificing body, and still felt up front. I could see using the sonnox as a phenomenal test tool for quickly finding the right balance for running my analog LA2A into my 1176; and maybe a few other use cases in the actual mix (could be really cool on guitars)

Your original sounded better on both but I understand it’s another tool. I really would like to see a vocal processing tutorial on your approach to the dynamic rangy male vocal types like a steve Perry, a steve Walsh, Freddy mercury, Tommy Shaw etc. we rarely see those powerful male vocalists styles where dynamics are all over the place featured on processing tutorials! My wish list!

I found Silk surprisingly versatile, fun and easy to dial in. Waves marketing makes it clear it is designed for modern vocals, but found it useful in a lot of scenarios, even on instruments. Works great when combined with an opto. Haven't tried Voca but I'm not convinced it can come close to replacing a trusty opto/tube/vca combo.

Silk is great. No - it's not the only plugin I use for vocals - I'll usually engage some sends for FX and maybe some parallel saturation/compression/reverb/whatever. But it does an excellent job of taking fairly raw vocals and making them sound a bit more professional and polished. Try the "RAW to Pro" presets as a starting point!

Pro tools tip : Select both tracks you want to toggle between. Mute one of them, then select them both. Then (depending on your keyboard) : "Shift" + "," or "Shift" + "M" will switch the mute to the other track. Which provides a smooth toggle between both tracks, and it's easier to do too ;). P.S. : These new Waves plugins are pretty smart. As it seems to be multiple Waves plugins packed into one (Waves used to do that quite a bit, recycling algo on multiple plugins). So using Silk would be a bit like using a Studiorack Waves plugins chained, but stripped down to the essential and with a more user friendly GUI. That's how it feels to me at least.

Managed to get silk vocal free and the little i've used it i've noticed you have be very delicate with just how much you add/remove as it sometimes seems aggressive. I've tried using it for a softer smokey 'jazz' type vocal and have had some success so far but it's a work in progress so I'll maybe let you know how it turns out!... Any tips for alternate processing for that type of vocal? (It's a bass male vocal: fundamental seems to be around 80Hz in places!).Thanks for the tips, walkthroughs, advice, loving the videos!

THX for showing the 2 in the mix. I personally prefer to use specialized tols for each purpose. E.g. a decent compressor for a certain voice ..and of course I like to experiment with diferent comps within my mixing process. Sometime you come up with great results when using different tools. So I find these two PlugIns may produce good results but stop you from beeing creative and shaping sound as you like. It is limiting you. I guess ;-) P.S. I think the original was the best version (and certainly you put the most time in it when dialing in the numerous plugins in the first place).

the problem with such plugins is, that you don´t really have detailed control....it either works, or not...hit or miss...probably nice for engineers starting out or if you don´t want to spend time time to learn to tweak all possible parameters in a more complex signal chain.

@InTheMixJoeCarrell
@InTheMixJoeCarrell 4 ай бұрын
I’ve been using a multiband compressor or eq on every vocal as one of the first inserts for years. I like smoothing out the tone early. Then I’ve been going into the Kirchhoff (I think it’s called) EQ from plugging alliance. It’s a lot like fab filter, but you can assign analog flavors to that top band. That is mostly just for getting rid of low mid buildup or any hipass filtering that needs done. For a really great character equalizer I have been using acustica ruby. DW Fearn copy. It’s amazing!! Then the acustica el Rey is a solid Joyce for compression because it still very alive, sounding and natural sounding

@albertbatchelor5882
@albertbatchelor5882 3 ай бұрын
With the Voca, the vocal is still muddy, still needs some eq. Original vocal is way more open, brighter and doesn't have that muddy sound. Nothing beats carefully picking your processors. All in ones never come close. The old Butch Vig vocals gives you way more control and you can get a much more open sound with it. But still individual selected processors is still the way to go. The Waves Silk is much better than the Voca, but it's not a fair comparison. The Waves Silk has eq control and a limiter. Which the Sonnox Voca is lacking. I would like to see you add an eq and limiter with the Voca to have a more fair comparison. Because the Voca is muddy because it's lacking any type of eq control. If I had to use one of these. It would be the Silk for a quick rough demo of pop or R&B. But for a pro mix for clients. A carefully selected vocal chain based on the vocal and genre is the only way to go. This is of course my opinion and I can see the Waves Silk being a great tool for alot of mixers. Great Video!!!🙂👍

Hi, I think you could have done a section of this, just playing the audio solo, so that we hear the effects clean. This here had me having to try separating the music from the vocal to hear . A bit tedious...

This is one of those you can't win situations haha. A huge complaint I hear is that we 'shouldn't ever solo' as it doesn't tell you how it sounds in the track! And if we ever solo it it creates confirmation bias!

Am I the only one who thought none of the options really sounded that great? Including the original? She definitely is a great singer though, I’m not quite sure why he thought the voca sounded good at all, there was something cool happening from the silk though when he used the mid band, but still not going to rush to buy it. Izotope Neutron is pretty cool for a vocal for an automatic quick mix tool if you want to try something, sometimes the exciter makes things a bit too harsh though, but it can easily be tamed with a mix level or be completely turned off.

The Voca is Snake Oil For the person who needs to have a sound effect but it doesn't do the surgical job that makes you want to move on,- IMHO. Silk has a bit more to offer but still no magic.

Yea rightttt Sonnox, essentially legends in this game, building from legendary code and algorithms under the hood/and know how, trying to cash grab us all, and attempt to constantly defy this KZfaq value system of getting called out as “snake oil or not” by troll reviewers and commenters who just want to get clicks and attention, RIGHT SURE. Joe is all class, even acknowledging you. And Sonnox +1 for a Voca sale just to spite the above comment. And +1 to Produce Like a Pro for product type compares vs. pure branded promos of single products. Good job guys!

It was crane song Phoenix. I loved that thing for years. I do have a working beta for the M1 machines, but the old instances will not recall. I’m hoping that gets cleared up before the final because that’s kind of a big deal. 😂

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Oh I see, I'm sorry to hear about the founder. Although my mentors never really used it, I always saw people using it and raving about it, and people raved about the developer in general. Never used it myself. Hopefully it gets taken over by the right people.

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Ha! But you're Joe Carrell, so Waves knows you, and they'll look after you. It's the little people Waves will rip off, with the Waves Update Plan, while not adequately letting them know it's a subscription. So many people have their plugins effectively rendered inoperable after an OS update because of WUP. Other plugin companies don't do this sort of thing. Thanks Joe, for all your fantastic contributions that offer valuable knowledge to people learning this craft. Best wishes.
