Hi, Michael, fantastic DIY video! Thank You! I am about to do this service in the next few days, and I have a few questions: My timing belt is still intact and functional, just due for change; with the old belt still on and engaged, when I break loose the 19mm bolt on the harmonic balancer, won't that impact counter-clockwise action turn the camshaft counter-clockwise(as you clearly state to never do)? To the same general point, should the transmission be in park, neutral, or in a forward gear? Thanks again for the vids, yours are the most detailed and helpful I have seen.

@@MichaelSmith-fn1yw Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. We appreciate that and we can hopefully help you. You will want to ensure you use an impact wrench/gun with a full battery charge to loosen the 19mm bolt. This will allow the bolt to be jolted repeatedly in a way that it lowers the risk of counterclockwise rotation. As far as transmission, you will want it in park. With the help of your fantastic videos, Mr. Borders, I successfully did the timing belt and water pump on my 97 Celica (which also has the 5S-FE motor). I just have one question: I didn't do the final 1 and 7/8 turn procedure, but the car runs fine. I can't for the life of me figure out the reason for that procedure. I mean, if the belt is solidly installed, and every 2 turns, if the upper and lower timing marks line up, what more is there to do? And, I don't get why the weird number of 1 and 7/8 comes into play here. Could you be so kind as to shed some light on this, please?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the follow up, that’s great news and we are honored you reached back out to us. Awesome job! 😁👍 The 1 7/8 rotation is to allow the alignment of engine to have some play. Since the engine was completely taken out of alignment when belt snapped (in our case)…the extra play or slack in the rotation allows for all moving parts from not shocking into position when engine is first started. Reduces the overall impact of all moving parts, leading to a less riskier and damaging startup that could shock the moving parts and lead them to breaking. It also plays a role in the overall cylinder positioning as the engine is being started and fuel is being introduced. It’s likely that you had a little more smoke on startup and that’s because of the fuel being introduced to the ever-so-slightly out of position cylinders. But once that fuel is burned off and the smoke settles, you should be good to go as long as your coolant system has been properly filled and pressurized. Awesome job again for making this a DIY project, you have earned this awesome rewarding feeling. 🍻
@Maplecook
@Maplecook 6 ай бұрын
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thank you so much for explaining this. Indeed, I NEVER would have figured that out on my own, since it has to do with the internal movement of the engine. I will happily keep consuming all your 5SFE content! Also, I have a 1991 Honda Civic Si (D16A motor) and a 1992 Lexus SC400 (1UZ-FE motor). Please know that if you ever decide to make videos relevant to those, I will be there taking notes again! Cheers! =)

This provides the required slack so that the pulley’s, gears, valves, pistons… don’t experience a shock when turning engine back on for the first time after performing this project.
