This pocket notepad is (slowly) replacing my phone. I took it everywhere with me for 30 days and whilst it's impossible for this humble little notebook to totally replace my phone, in some ways it is doing exactly that and dramatically improving my life in terms of mental function, clarity of thought and organic creativity. No need for a new $xxx dumb phone 😎, and definitely something I'll continue to do.

Im thinking of deleting the youtube app from my phone (facebook too) -- not the whole thing, just the apps -- I'll still have access when I need it through the browser. I could probably get a lot more done without the temptation of giving in to useless mind numbing entertainment fluff lol.

It’s so ironic to see so many of us seeing the value in pocket notebooks. I remember seeing my father in the 90s and 2000s using a pocket notebook all the time. It’s like we’re going backwards in a good way. Thanks for this video!

Lately, I’ve been trying little ways each week to be more mindful about my digital use and set intentional tech boundaries. I love this idea of using a notebook and am going to try it-it will be this week’s digital goal. We had a cell and internet service outage for 24 hours last week, and what a blessing! It was a reminder of how much more meaningful and less frantic my day can be when I am not tied to my phone and its distractions!

Hi Katherine, thank you for stopping by and yes, same here, I've been feeling this urge to digitally minimalise for so long and have been trying out so many ways to do so! I've reduced phone usage w the pocket notebook, and actually retired my Kindle and gone back to paperbacks in the recent months too, and also stopped writing my scripts longform on the computer but rather on a A4 sketchbook and also stopped scrolling SM basically. Please let me know how you felt putting pen to paper in the mini notepad again - i swear for me it was like ideas and longforgotten feelings were just sparking off in the brain when i started

Great video! I always admired the way my grandparents lived. I am 43 years old now, and they were amongst us until I was 25 years old. They lived up their 80's in the country side in south Brazil, farming and self sustainable. Nothings was wasted and no unnecessary staff. Either they would work, or there would be no food. There was no "home delivery/ take away food". There was no weekend. I was 14 years old when I started to work and during the first 4 years, I was also studying to become a Shoemaker technician. The school was in another town and I needed to live away from home on weekdays. Also during school breaks, I had no holiday and needed to be at the factory. At that time I had no idea what I wanted to be once grown up, but slowly I started to like what I was doing. It was when I found it is not about we do what we like, but more about we like whatever we do. I know time has changed, and people's priority as well, although I am pretty sure we are able to adapt 60-70% to live as they once lived. In 2000, when I was 21 years old I moved to another state in northeast Brazil and lived there for 2 years. I was going back home in south only once a year for 2 weeks. Later in 2008, I was 28 and for the first time I moved out from Brazil to live in Indonesia. It was a completely new environment, culture, cost of living. My plan was to live there for 3 to 5 years and back to my homeland The time passed and spent 11 years in Indonesia. Then in 2018 I moved to Pakistan and lived there for 16 months and January 2020 my wife and I moved to Vietnam. Since the pandemic, and specially after my sister had a stroke (also during pandemic), my wife and I changed significantly the way we live and spend our time and money. More home cooking and almost 0% waste. More walking and less car/ taxi. Less shopping. More fruits and vegetable. Less meat, chocolate, sugar and candies. It has been 6 months now we have not bought a single pair of shoes, pants, perfume, etc. Our plan now is to work less, use the money to help family and have a even more minimalist life!

It appears that you are enthusiastic and stoic about life, which made me reflect on my hustle life and how I'm slowly sinking in the mire of technological diversions despite all the books I've read about staying focused in a chaotic and fast-paced world. Hi Jean you motivated me to get a 555 book - not sure if you have seen one of those notebooks that were very popular in the 1970s. I have a friend who is 71 years old and he told me he always carry a note pad. So I instantly thought it was an iPad. But as it turned out, it was a 555 notebook. I am going to try a 555 and see how much it is going to change my life. Thank you.

hi Roger, just googled the 555 book and it looks perfect! the pocket sized version that is haha! I'm so happy you're gonna try this out, because i really liked this once i started doing it and i'm going to continue indefinitely i think. It sparked a lot of thoughts and happy nostalgia and creativity in me. I do think with the digital advent we have lost some precious stuff from our past. Please let me know how it feels for you! the 555 notepad image brought back a lot of childhood times memories for me as well so happy :)

I keep a simple pen & paper Bullet Journal and love how the system nimbly accommodates so much of what I want to capture and remember, as well as sit and think about, work through, or plan. I've only had a smart phone for about a year and use it for a handful of purposes, like calls, camera, calendar, occasional navigation, alarms & timers. I don't have mobile data.

I have struggled with pen to paper for years because of course “tablets and iPads have taken over that and it “cool” to write with a tablet.,. I found that I’m going back and forth with this constantly going back because really there is nothing like pen and paper. This video is perfect because of how you spoke of how it works for you and things that makes it a joy to. For me the iPad or tablet is great but for health reasons “eye strain” its exciting to try this pocket notebook. Thanks for the video and jealous of your location, cold weather here where i am :)

Hi Jean, what an interesting idea and one that can be unfolded in many different ways you don't have to have it a replacement for your phone you could have it as an addition to your phone but one of the things that your video today made me think about is just how much time do I spend playing games or being distracted by the electronic device. I think I'm going to set some boundaries with my little phone friend. Thanks for the idea.

I'm gonna start trying this because I have noticed myself losing SOO much time on my phone. I will still keep my smartphone rather than using a "dumb phone" because I love nature photography and having a camera on me most of the time helps me capture beautiful landscapes and animals. But I will keep it in my backpack rather than my pocket as I've noticed even that small amount of disconnect from my phone is enough for my brain to stop feeling "leashed" to it and just live.

I love putting pen to paper, as a screen play writer, ideas are always bouncing around, so yeah agree, get those ideas out your head to paper and this leaves room for more new ideas, rather than trying to remember the idea and it bouncing around..i often turn my phone off or go out and perpose leave the phone at home..great little video ..Peace

What a great video!! Thanks for the inspiration. I do phone free Sunday's, but living in a van I feel as though I should be able to do more phone free days! Also, on the note of the new (old) phone. Although it sounds like a good idea, and I've considered it as well, I've heard people say that it just doesn't have enough features to be used as a phone and they are "forced" to have a smartphone, but use that sparingly instead. I've also considered it, but not sure how it would work and if it would just be another thing in my life. Especially these days when you need 2 factor authentication for mail, social media etc....

I dunno why it makes me so happy but it just felt so good to hold onto a book and flip beloved pages again lol. Hi Jean! I spend a lot of time on my phone. Smartphones are useful like you said, but it's the social media apps really that distract us. I deleted a couple of them and gained back probably 2 hours a day instantly. We can't discard our smartphone, but I think we can make time and find activities to keep us away from it longer. I've recently started bullet journaling and it forces me to concentrate on just using a pen and a ruler for more than an hour each time, which is unusual because I've definitely developed digital ADD over the past years of using smartphones 😅
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Жыл бұрын
hey you! it's so wonderful to hear from you so often and your notes & sharing are always something i look forward to. I've actually weaned off SM a long time ago - i post updates on insta about us in Bali somestimes but i try not to scroll everyday at all. Once in a long while i do scroll and then am confronted by the feelings of "hey i missed a lot in my friends' life back home and overseas etc." but life is also really busy here in Bali for us and i'm glad i don't spend time overall on SM much at all lol. I think if one is more social then the phone becomes indispensable, but given my hermit crab tendencies i actually found that its easy to ditch the phone for most of the day and no biggie in that lol. I totally agree about digital ADD. I hate the fact that its much harder these days for me to focus and be singlefminded about my tasks and when i'm doing stuff i don't like too much I'm always happy for an excuse (like WA msgs haha) to pick up the phone and get distracted

I ditched my iPhone and use a flip phone. The problem with dumbing down a smartphone is that you can reverse what you've done by re-installing those time-wasting, attention-grabbing apps. My flip phone has only a few pre-loaded basic apps. I can't load apps onto this phone (no app store). It's just for calling and texting (if I have to). On a side note: I don't always take my flip phone with me. I also wear a watch and have recently started using pocket note books. I use them for appointments, lists, grocery shopping, recording observations, location directions and basically anything else that I think is important enough to jot down on paper.

I think it's less about the phone but how it is used. Unfortunately a lot of people are addicted to it and a slave to notifications. It's part of the instant access world and fear of missing out. Just remember that not every notification is import or every message has to be answered straight away. If it's urgent people can still call! Use the phone, don't let it be your master.

I don't even use social media like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc... but I still have great benefits from using a paper notebook. I have Things 3 as a tasks manager, Bear as a note taking app, Fantastical as a calendar manager, DayOne for journaling but I don't get as much pleasure as I get with a notebook. However, I'm always torn between the benefits of digital part vers analog one. For example, DayOne could take a picture... not the notebook. Things 3 could notify me at a very specific moment. With Bear, I could search in years old notes at the speed of light. With analog notebook, I can't do that. But with analog, I could take the time to reflect in a way no digital apps can't. And I was thinking that was due to the fact of holding a stick and letting it glide on dead tree so I tried to reproduce the thing with an iPad and the Apple Pencil but WTF I don't know why, it's not the same thing than old fashion paper and ink. So sadly, the ink and paper are 100% inefficient but on the other way 100% effective and I read recently than being effective is more important and being efficient :D

The best or worst example I saw was a person who waited in line for 18 hours to see the pope pass by. When the big moment in their life arrived they spent the entire time videoing the pope, in essence never looking at him in person. When I pointed this out to the person and mentioned that if they wanted a video there was plenty already out there, they looked at me as if I had 3 heads!! Lol

I have been doing this for a long time. 7 months ago, I ditched my smartphone completely. I switched to a flip phone. I don't agree about deleting apps. Because all you have to do is reinstall them. I keep the flip phone just for calls and messages in an emergency.

Hi there! I still am leaving home most days without the phone - it's actually been many months that i've been doing this cos i really feel how intrusive it is. Over a month going on 2 now that i'm w the notepad and still going - its made a huge difference esp to my memory once i write stuff down. But on days when I have stuff going on, like one of my apartments is currently up for retenanting so i got to be available to my agent overseas, then the phone goes where i go, or if i'm meeting people - they have the expectation of being able to communicate with me in case they are late or whatever. I find its a case of finding a way to make this work with your lifestyle i think. You may never be able to get off the phone entirely but u can limit its reach into all areas of your life - if thats what you want of course

I love the video and i do fully agree I am 30 year old dog and i started to have interest in pocket notebooks after my co-worker recomended it to me and the reasons of how is more paws-ading is because you know the internet and all the social media (era) it gives me ads and i hate the ads and im starting to hate phones because everyone is looking at there phones and looking at you know snapchat, facebook, youtube, tiktok and so much more and you want to do it but you decided to watch a video about it and not starting the task or goal that i want to do and i think that the more you all are on social media the more time that passes by and you guys are litterly wasting time that you could of put on your family, friends and so much more but you decided to chill on phone and after many years i thought of flip phones to but they also destract me from my work and i cant get things done but until.... I went to dollar tree for work organization when i saw a pocket notebook it was the compisition mini notebook and i grabbed it and that was a couple years ago and i thought at that time that I as in a dog need to change my (era that i am in) life to make it better And what i mean beter I mean to simplify life and make things slower, tasks, to-do's, brain dump to you know empty my head, problems and solutions, things needed to get done, ideas, some things like skills that i need to work on, calculater, calender, the progress, and that kinds of stuff Anyway i thought hey i want a notebook to better my self and to think more clearly and other stuff so i bought 30 of those things and it did wor my work flow was good, i felt healthier, my brain can work fast and effectively, i always multitask even though it is bad for your health and i getings done, i remember since i was a 4 year old because of this function,(non-relevant), i am healthy and i drink vanilla almond milk because i have abs and it helps me develop those define my abs and i eat veges and fruits a ton and i has worked for me You and this dude below actually inspired me to pocket journal altough the video was posted this year itdid inspire e t contnue wit what im doing and i have te channel in the comments of this posts I hope this inspire you to pocket journal, love you, be save, and have a more productive and minimal work flow 😇😊

thank you Lilpebbles for sharing your story - what you said absolutely resonates - i esp need the slowing down that just traditional good old writing forces me to do, to process my thoughts and emotions more clearly and productively, especially when i'm doing creative work. Jean, everyone must face facts: Using any cell smart phone we cannot avoid. We need to make calls and be able to contact people in emergency situations. Plus, we need to be connected to the internet to do whatever. One simply cannot live without using a smart phone, This is the morale of your video, it seems to me. (I could be wrong.) Is your mini note pad connected to the internet in any way?

But you can't use a pocket notepad to produce youtube videos can you? A more sensible way to minimalise is to use your mobile phone for everything.... notetaking, video recording, video editing, and posting to youtube. And ditch you desktop mac or whatever desktop you have. Now that will be a video worth watching if you produce it.

uh no, i find myself much more productive and focused when seated at the laptop so i can complete all tasks much faster and put it out of the way. But given i enjoy the wonderful days in Bali so much i try to minimise the time when i'm actually working or stick it to nightfall so i can roam around outside day time lol. Or just read or paint. Laptop/computer - good work tool. Phone - something in between that just bugs u a lot n sucks up time. Thats how it is for me.

hi! i do appreciate that point but my hope is that people will still try out the pocket notepad thing and essentially reduce their reliance on the phone for everything including regular normal brain processing lol cos its really just starting to take over entire lives out there. We lost something a lil indefinable with all these digital advances - using my pocket notepad to make my lists, reminders, appointments, gym workout plans, costs records, capturing my thoughts and random ideas etc brought home something quite precious to me. Everyone should try.
