I replaced a few broken damper flanges on my Baldwin piano. I noticed that while I had the action out that the dampers with the new flanges stuck out more than the old ones but didn't realize until I put the action back in that something was wrong. The newly flanged dampers don't lift from the strings when pushing the keys, but they do lift with the pedal. Please advise on what the problem is and how to fix this. Thank you for your help and your videos. They are very helpful.

Is the length of the new flanges the same as the old flanges? If they are longer then it means you need a different size of flange. If they are the same size as the old flanges it means the damper spoons need to be adjusted. You would need to bend the spoons which are located behind the bottom of the damper lever. The spoons should be bent a little bit out or toward the damper lever.

Is it possible to replace just the springs? I tried to push out the spring pivot, but it seems soft. Thanks for your videos, I’m learning a lot!

Damper springs in most pianos are fairly difficult to replace, that's why in most cases it's just easier to replace the flange.

Is there a video showing how to put the damper lever back into the piano? I am ordering the damper flanges, and I can see how the flanges can be replaced (mine were plastic, and the majority are broken). But once I get the flanges replaced, I’m not sure how to correctly place them back into the piano.

The flanges are screwed to a rail in the action, so you would just screw them back onto the rails that they were screwed to when you took them out.

howardpianoind My issue is that the majority of the damper levers were broken all the way off of that rail and laying on the bottom, or dangling. I did my best to number and order the ones that were completely unattached. Do I have to take the action out of the piano in order to screw these in? Sorry if these are obvious answers; I am a newbie! Love your videos, they are very helpful.

unfortunately my piano dampers are all plastic, not just the flange, so many of them, about 24, need complete replacements. i got the parts, and tried bending the wire to the same shape, but the wire is longer than the original and the dampers block the hammers. how do is shorten them correctly, and get them in the right shape?

I would bend them to match the old wires first. Then once you have the proper bends in the wire you can cut the excess length off to match the old wires. The bending process can be a little tricky at first, but as you start doing it you'll get the knack for it.
