At long last, part three is finally here! This is a long one because it took a lot of work to replace this flange. I pushed the actual toilet reset to part four. This is what service plumbers actually face day in and day out. Enjoy and thanks for your support!

I guess I'm confused as to why you even removed the old one. It didn't have any broken bolt-slots(The ONLY reason people replace them.).... Seems like allot of wasted time and energy.

That's precision right there. A 1/8" misalignment of the flange will cause cross-eye syndrome to those sitting at the throne.

As an aid in setting both slots equidistant from the wall, mark the measurements on the floor.

i would use a grinder and cut old flange in couple of places and extract. why remove at all ? would not that be easier to attach metal repair flange with self tapping screw right on top of old flange ?

When drilling metal by hand always maintain 90 degree against the surface and drill at low speed. Also a blade is available for the sawzall that cuts black pipe. Multi tool is also helpful. Cut slots inside the pipe going outward then chip out sections.. That old lead is very toxic. Gives you drain bamage

If he was tearing out lead and oakum every day then yeah I’d say there’s something to worry about. But if he’s doing one or two or even three, every year or couple years it might affect him. You ever go fishing? If so.. What do you think the weights are made of?

Linoleum...?? Dang... was impressed with how well you missed the "tile" with all that hammering...
@ssdtrain1

You should be using the chisel inwards or try to turn the flange with it. just so you don't crack any flooring. But looks like you eventually got it

Oakum was used as a "base" for the hot lead to be poured onto. Oakum is fibrous strand submerged in pine tar, and once it is compacted into a joint and the lead is added, it is impenetrable. However, a nuisance to remove. It's old technology that worked 80 years ago,, LOL

Also i must add, put a tile blade on the angle grinder. Cut a one half inch ring around the outside of the flange, through the tile, then chip inwards towards the flange. If you can get underneath, go down there and hit the black iron pipe with a big hammer. Shock it. After it breaks replace with PVC.

I've watched all three videos, it's been over a year now - Did the toilet re-install fine afterwards, any leaks? I'm still not clear as to why all this work was done? You stated in video #1 that the toilet was rocking? Was that push-in ABS repair flange too high? It looked fairly new and in good condition (as did the wax seal) when you removed the toilet.

If that leveling compound was thin enough, you might be able to inject it with something like a turkey baster.

Did not see or hear why you pried the one side at 29:50 without using a level, and how did you fasten it to the floor?

Did you purposely put your closet bolt cutouts at noon and six instead of three and nine like conventional flanges? Why?
@DanSarahMakers
@DanSarahMakers 3 жыл бұрын
If you are refering to the long adjustable slots then yes I did. I have seen way too many of the outer sections of these adjustable slots on the cast iron flanges snap off and leave the toilet unsecured on at least one side. The notch that I actually bolted the closet bolts too have never broken in my experiance.

@@DanSarahMakers I have a cast iron toilet flange installed in this manner and I have to keep resetting the toilet about every 6 weeks or so cuz the toilet bolts work loose from the flange. How do you correct that problem?
@garykrell2058
@garykrell2058 Жыл бұрын
Kirk what I do is use flat washers over the bolts big enough to cover slot and then use as flat a nut you can get to tighten down on closet bolts to hold them secure I've soldered them in place on brass flanges

Seems like lot of work to remove these flanges, why couldnt you had used a small blow torch to heat up the lead then the flange would be able to be pulled upwards?

Not only UNNEEDED, but you also installed de new flange incorrectly, the flange has to be OVER, ABOVE the floor.
