Wow, this mechanic knows where he's talking about! Great. Only things missing, are protective gloves, since the ring gear is extremely hot and could cause severe burns on your hands.

Whenever I did a clutch job on my old Fords I would always check the teeth on the ring gear closely. The compression of the engine often meant it stopped frequently at the same point of rotation. The starter gear would wear the ring gear more in that one area. What I do is heat the ring gear with the oxy acetylene torch to expand it, carefully drive it off the flywheel with a blunt punch (brass punch is best..). Keeping it hot (or reheating it) I flip it over and carefully drive it back onto the flywheel giving all of the ring gear teeth a brand new surface for the starter gear to engage. Like a brand new ring gear, but for zero cost.

On the install you can also put the fly wheel in the freezer for about an hour if you don't have a oxy/ace torch. Then a LP torch should work. As always great vide!!!! thumbs up!!!

I'm about to change the ring gear and starter in an old Timberjack cable skidder with an old Continental engine on it. wasn't quite sure what I was getting into as it will be my first attempt at changing a ring gear. My mechanic & I watched this video. When he gently tapped it & it came right off, we both looked at each other with a "Yeah, right" look. Then he heated the new one and dropped it right on. My mechanic & I were laughing by now. We know how it looks so easy, but in reality it never works that way. HOWEVER, when we did ours, it worked exactly like the video!! We couldn't believe it worked so smoothly. Thanks for the great instructional video!!

I don't see why you'd need the shim between the flywheel and crank. You took material off the clutch surface of the flywheel, but the pressure plate bolts to the same surface. So even if you took a good amount of material off, the pressure plate would end up moving towards the engine along with the clutch disk. The only thing that would possibly need adjusting is the clutch linkages since the pedal would have to move a little farther for the throwout bearing to contact the pressure plate. A shim between the flywheel and crank wouldn't affect the distance between the clutch disk and flywheel anyway, since the pressure plate is bolted directly to the flywheel.

Back in the day the old AMC 6 cylinders used Ford starters with a longer drive gear. When some idiots used a regular Ford starter the shorter drive gear would only engage about 1/8th of an inch of the ring gear teeth. Needless to say mechanics got to replace a whole lotta AMC ring gears back then.

First one I did at 14 years old, just hack saw it of and then split last part with coal chisel and the put new ring gear in fire until just starts to glow slightly and then it slide on fly wheel and let cool down any way good video to teach people who get ripped of by mechanics saying you need a new fly wheel.

You don’t need to heat the ring gear to remove it. A few wacks with the chisel and it will pop off. Heat the new ring gear up and drop it on. Let it cool and you’re good to go. I do this and have done this hundreds of times working in a fleet ford shop.

Just had a manual Honda Civic with a spinning ring gear. I wasted money on starter motors, I had no idea these could come loose. Must have heated up when the old clutch (replaced) went bad. I spot welded a few points on the interface, rather than do an entire replacement job. Don't know if it will work, but my initial starter test is good.

Before you start heating the new ring gear, clamp a couple of vise grips upside down just on the teeth to handle it with.

Don't have access to a torch? Freeze your flywheel overnight, throw your ring gear in the oven for about an hour, and viola.

What do you suppose was the cause of the damage on the original ring gear? Was it a bad starter or was it driver error for starting a vehicle that's already running?

hi, I dont under stand why machining the flywheel will make the distance from the disc to the flywheel too short. Movine the disc too far towards the end of input shaft of trans, ???

i found the ring gear on my 7.3 bad in four different places, apparently the engine always stopped and wore in four different places, thats where the starter always slammed into the gear. replaced it easily

You can also drill a hole through the ring gear and chisel it off on some vehicles

Ive just had my flywheel machined and i dont believe they have used a shim to push it forward, its making a ticking noise from the flywheel now. Would anyone know if that would be the cause of the ticking?

Thank you. Why cant i just clean up teeth with angle ginder and turn ring gear over. Chamfer on my ring gear is big enough on both sides to sit down flat. Also why the shim, surely if clutch is bolted to flywheel the whole assembly just moves back .020".I have a hydraulic system and i can adjust push rod from slave cylinder to compensate the difference.

First time doing this is it not important for the teeth on the ring gear to be in the exact same spot as the old ring gear?

Heating the ring gear makes the teeths softer. How is this afecting the harding of the teeths? Don't they last less?

Do this before resurfacing the flywheel so it doesn't become warped.

@spelunkerd The flywheel's just a thin piece of metal with a non-removable ring gear that bolts to the torque converter with a couple of bolts.

@RegniA Short answer is ring gears are installed on factory flywheels in a similar way - heated and layed/pressed on) - so this method is not much different although a bit slower to do.

I heard of another way of putting on by putting the fly wheel in dry ice to shrink it, that way the ring gear would slide on would that work as well? anybody try that method before? thanks for the video, never thought of the shim i better look into that. got to get my 50 ford back on the road!

Ya' gotta' love how he heats one side and lets it cool while he heats the OTHER side, then installs it back on the flywheel!!!! You only have to heat 4 or 5 inches of it.

What happened when the Starters is not start the Car

Totally ludicrous that he said to put a shim between the flywheel and the crankshaft. All he did was move the flywheel away from the crank. The clutch disc is bolted directly to the other side of the flywheel smashed between the pressure plate and it did not move the clutch plate away from the flywheel I cannot believe that anybody would believe that. Anyone that thinks for one second that he needed that shim rethink the physics! And yes you heat the ring gear to make it expand it falls off the flywheel you heat the new ring gear so it expands and it falls onto the flywheel. But think about the other part if you surface the flywheel it's still the same distance when you bolt the pressure plate on nothing changes except the throw out bearing moves a Little closer to the engine. Which means all you do is adjust your clutch linkage ever so slightly would you have to do anyway because you just installed a new clutch disc. Once again the shim is ludicrous.

Anywhere between 500 and 700F is hot enough

imo his ASE certification explains quite a lot , SMH ! Just knock the daxn thing off clean appropriately heat the new one & set it on ! & have never seen 15 or so thousands off a flywheel face do anything to a clutch !
