Great video!! I’ve got to replace a Post that is rotten at the bottom as well. I already knew pretty much what to do, and have all the tools, except a New post. I believe Im going to have to Jackup mine just a bit, when using the brace, cause One side of my front porch, the side with the rotting beam at the bottom, It’s leaning a bit, due to the bottom of the post, I suspect moved a bit during a bad high wind storm (here south East, get heavy, strong winds and rain! Especially during Tornado season. I’m far from a carpenter, but I know enough for certain small projects. Seeing the Way you have your Posts Setup at the top, and the bottom with those Metal brackets to help hold ( excuse me if my terminology isn’t correct, I’m learning) lol That’s something I dnt have on my 2 posts that hold my front porch up, and make it more secure. I inherited my Grandma’s home, after she passed in 08. It was Built in the 50s. But besides some Minor work, it’s one hell of a built home! This video sure helped a lot. I thought about just getting treated Wood, I actually like the way it look’s!

Hey Bob! Just a note to say... we are in Oregon and my husband is going to replace some posts so I was looking at videos to help and came across yours... great demonstration first of all but mostly I noticed your hat in the beginning and thought it might have said Paradise but wasn’t sure.. then at the end you said you lived in So Cal, but sure enough your hat was clear to see Paradise Strong! I grew up in Paradise and my mom lost her home and is now rebuilding :) That was just a cool addition to your helpful video! Thanks :)

Great Video Bob! I like your style! I have three to replace but the bottom brackets (same as yours) were set in the original concrete slab. They are all rusted out. Can you make any suggestions on how to anchor them when I replace the beams? Thanks!
@BobsTwoCarGarage
@BobsTwoCarGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Frank Cook yes, Simpson makes several different types of surface mounted post bases. You’ll need to drill a hole in the concrete to mount the new base with an anchor bolt like a “red head” use a base that hold the post off the slab and keeps the bottom drier.

@@BobsTwoCarGarage I was wondering the same. Only mine doesn’t have those brackets at the bottom. I’m not sure how to explain the way it was done, it’s held up for about 30 years though, My Father, replaced the last set. Now that I own the home, I’m doing all the smaller repairs that can be done. Those suggestions are great! Bob, thanks! I’ve screenshot this info, so will have for when I get a new Post soon and replace the old one.

Can a 4x6 beam sit over two 4x4 posts?. In my case, the posts are 4 feet apart. Does it need a knee brace?. Please advice
@BobsTwoCarGarage
@BobsTwoCarGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, on the 4x6 beam sitting on a 4x4 post. A knee brace would be for lateral support and may or may not be necessary depending on how much shear strength the roof provides and what type of connecting hardware you use at the top and bottom of the posts.

@BobsTwoCarGarage

Yes, you should be able to cut it off at the surface with an angle grinder and drill for a new bracket with a rotohammer. Of course I’m assuming you have those tools:).

Question For a temporary type fix. Could I, Cut off the bottom rotten part , and then possibly put a bigger thick block of wood or something underneath it? Nail in from the side into the As I mentioned for an example, A thick wooden Block? That way the bad bottom rotten would be cut off, and instead of replacing a whole new post right away (which I Know is probably the best idea) But just wondering if their is some sorta temporary fix, If I can find something workable already around. Any idea’s?
@BobsTwoCarGarage

Not a good idea and will probably be more work. Go for it and replace the whole thing.

Hi Bob. Great post. I have a similar setup but I'd like to remove the middle posts. I plan using steel angle to support the awning/porch and replace the existing rotted posts but can't figure out how to temporary hold the awning in place. There are 3 8' 4x4 horizontal beams, and 4 4x4 holding them in place.

Hey you did not go back with a block of anything on the bottom of your post. I have 6x6x8 posts on concrete slab of patio and post always rot out at base. Guess I wash down my patio too much. I have been looking at the plastic and metal bases. You indicate just use a cut of wood under the post. I would think that cut would rot just like the post. Thanks for the video.
@BobsTwoCarGarage
@BobsTwoCarGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t because I used treated wood that won’t rot. A treated block is the old school way but the plastic will, of course, last forever . Use that or the metal base that holds it off the slab.

@BobsTwoCarGarage
@BobsTwoCarGarage 3 жыл бұрын
It depends but if the wood under the roofing is rotted and needs to be replaced , yes , the roofing needs to come off first. Of course, patios roofs don’t need to meet the same requirements as your house. Depending on where you need to repair you can tear off , repair, and patch

Is there a way to remove a post like that (not on the end) and support it with a beam? I’ve got one in the center of my patio and I’d like to open up the space. But I don’t want my house to fall down.
@BobsTwoCarGarage
@BobsTwoCarGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Eliminating a post would be similar to removing a load bearing wall. That can be done it just requires a bigger beam as well. You need to build a temporary wall to hold everything up while you replace the beam. You'll need to check local building codes to determine the size of beam necessary to support the span.

@BobsTwoCarGarage
@BobsTwoCarGarage 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on a lot of factors but if it is tilting perpendicular to the joists you can push it upright and add corbels as diagonal bracing. Too much tilt may have caused more extensive damage that would also need to be repaired .
