In this video I will be taking you along as I repair the broken cast iron axle on my John Deere 155c lawn tractor. This should apply to most if not all of the 100 series tractors made by John Deere.
When I was faced with the challenge of what to do about the broken axle, I turned to youTube as I always do to research what others have done. I find it comforting to see just how someone else was able to do what I am about to do... to my suprise, I didn't find anyone showing you what I show in this video.
I hope this will help someone else out there have the confidence to take on repairs such as this one! As my grandpa always used to tell me... "when there's the will, there's a way"

I am getting ready to tackle this project on my mower. I have the La165 , I have noticed that the front axle carries a different part number depending on what mower you look up. Shouldn't the part be the same on all of the L series mowers?

Peggy Bartl it sure was a shock for me too. Happily the repair is something a homeowner can do. I’m happy that you found my video helpful.

My daughter is also my number one assistant, and like your's, there's "too much belly-aching." Love it! Thanks for the video. I've not yet had to replace the front axle on my JD LA 145, but when it happens, I know what to do. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for posting this video. My John Deere L120 is 13 years old and the axle broke in virtually the same spot. I would expect any moving part to eventually fail. However, I, for one, believe it is a flaw in the casting process. In the absence of corrosion the frame and cast iron parts should never fail or suffer from metal fatigue. I encourage those that have experienced this failure to contact John Deere as this may be a more widespread issue.

I think most of the axle breakage is cause by not replacing center pivot pin when needed. when severely worn it allows to much axle free play and increases the torque on each end of the axle causing most of this kind of breakage. Common to larger tractors as well.

My one also broke on the same spot. For some reasons it's mostly the right tire that falls out.

Thank you sooooo much for posting this great video. My Deere L120 (2004 model) had the same exact problem: the cast iron axle cracked in half out of the blue. This is the only video online and on KZfaq that shows how to replace this axle. Interesting is like your mower my wheels were toed out for a few years before it broke. Now the mower is all fixed and the toed out is no longer an issue. Thank you again. Tom from Idaho USA.

Kind of looks like you were doing "Wheelies" with that JD rider lawnmower one TOO many times." That "cast iron axle" looks a whole lot like POT-METAL construction. My 42 year old Wheelhorse's axle has never broken yet and it does "Great Wheelies". Maybe Too much tire pressure. Thanks for the great Video Sir and happy safe lawnmowering.

So once you put the new axle assembly back on, does it have any side to side sway or simply just the vertical sway motion. I think mine may be gone as it moves back and forth a bit on the side to side motion
@HanginwithHarv

Not had any problems with it swaying side to side. It has the vertical travel as you mentioned only.

Hey Harv. Kinda glossed over actually removing the 18mm bolt attaching the axel to the chassis. Did you use a torque wrench or a hammer on a socket wrench?
@HanginwithHarv
@HanginwithHarv Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt! I may have used a breaker bar. If you don't have one, you can use a piece of pipe that will fit over your socket wrench. Depending on how long it's been there maybe some penetrating spray. I honestly don't recall now if I had trouble with it or not.

Come on, I can't catch a break (no pun intended). I'm sitting in the garage just trying to replace the brace that the draft arm for the deck goes through. Did a quick check last week and removing just the muffler shield exposes the axle bolt head, and I have a clear shot at the nut that holds the plate assembly and axle in place. So, the parts came in, I pulled the LA145 into the garage, dropped the muffler shield, put the tractor up on a shallow ramp so I have room to work and poof. The axle bolt and axle nut are not happy with an 18 (sloppy loose) , not happy with a 17 (will not go on the head or nut) , no joy on a 3/4 ( sloppy loose) and 13/16 will not go on the nut or bolt head. This is a new from dealer so I know nobody has switched out with oddball stuff. I'm afraid if I pull the muffler and try going to town with a 18 on the bolt head I'm going to round out either the nut or the bolt. What is going wrong with my DIY project???

Just a quick update: My S&K 18 MM was sloppy loose. My Harbor Freight 18 MM impact socket was too tight and I didn't want to drive it on with a hammer. Borrowed a 18 MM Craftsman from my neighbor and it fit perfect. So, finally ready to make progress and nada... can not get the bolt to turn at all. Friend came over with his air gun and got the same results. Breaker bar, ng. By that time, the Harley was in danger of getting hit by flying tools so I shut things down for the night. Gave it a shot of WD40 and figured one more try in the morning. Again, total failure. Called a local shop, and hauled the now stripped down tractor to them. He put his gun on it and it would not budge. Jacked the tractor up and put jackstands under the frame so the axle was only carrying the weight of the wheels, not the weight of the tractor. Hit it once, no go. Hit it twice, no go. Came out with a BIG electric air wrench. Hit it once and it spun the bolt and the nut came right off. Don't understand what I saw, but it was the best $20.00 I ever spent on that darned tractor.

Lot of your video was off screen Harv. Would have liked to see the steering rods disconnected from the wheel assembly. Mine are frozen so the wheels wont turn.

I was just wondering, aren't the zerk fittings on the axle supposed to be facing towards the front for easy access.
@HanginwithHarv
@HanginwithHarv Жыл бұрын
You could be correct there @dougfairburn803. The part is the symmetrical and the only difference is zerks to the front verses to the back. I don't have any issues getting to them and feel they are more protected from damage.

Do you think happened to it, was there some kind of accident or was it just a bad casting?

After having to weld my deck cracks all up, my LA110 axle just broke, what a cheap built over priced mower. I never had these problems with any older mowers.

Thanks I found a used axle on ebay for $40, the deck cracks are around the bolt holes for the blade spindles and the idler pulley. Also the rear deck support brackets also cracked around the welds. Keep an eye out for cracks in these areas.

Ok a dumb question for you but what is the part that actually runs through the front tire? The part that the hub/bearings go through? I thought that part was called the axel.
@DJCARBON2012
@DJCARBON2012 3 жыл бұрын
The axel is the main part he replaced, the thick metal cast iron. Those separate pieces holding the tires would be more like control arms of you want to call them that.
@Rags722
@Rags722 3 жыл бұрын
@@DJCARBON2012 Actually, if you look at it from my point of view, the big cast piece is called the axle, but the "control arm" also have a sub axle on each one for the individual wheel.

My axle broke on the exact same line as this. Obviously it is a casting defect.

To be honest I really don't understand what you are saying. I think the problem is a defect in the casting and after a few years of bumping over rough ground it broke along that line. I don't think it had anything to do with steering.

Do you realize you installed the new axle backwards? The grease zerks face the front...
@mswtoyota
@mswtoyota 6 жыл бұрын
Hangin with Harv: On my LA140, the vertical part of the axle where the spindles slide in is tilted in at the top and back towards the rear of the tractor. This sets the caster for the front tires and may affect the steering. The way you installed it, it has the spindles tilted toward the front of the tractor, and may prematurely wear your front wheel bushings/bearings, as well as affect the turning radius.

@@mswtoyota your exactly right the axle is in backwards zerks face out towards headlights I am looking at my 190C right now and getting ready to replace my front axle. Cracked in half just like his. It's an intentional flaw from John Deere!

Hangin with Harv yes, I know. The locking nut is Frozen. I have soaked it in PB Blaster, tried a breaker bar and a impact wrench and no luck. I'm going to let it soak with PB Blaster for 24 hours and try again tomorrow.
