Replacing Rear Driveshaft U Joints on a Jeep TJ

In this video I show how I replaced the 2 U-Joints on my rear driveshaft. This was the first time I had replaced a u-joint so it was a bit of a learning curve. Mine were very stuck in place but once I got it figured out it moved along fairly quickly.

Great job! If you do the front u-Joint first, you don't need to worry about the back one coming apart. I had always used a hammer, bench vise, and sockets to change U-Joints. I don't have a bench vise anymore and planned to use my ball joint press. It was good to see a video of someone doing it that way. I clicked on the video to see about the rubber boot on the driveshaft where it goes into the transfer case.

Finally found a video with the same axle with a boot that I have. I was intimidated by the clamp on the boot but watching you helped. Also my straps had blue loctite on them and I did see in my Jeep manual that it recommended replacing the straps.

I'm glad you found the video! Yeah replacing the straps probably isn't the worst idea just to be safe.

Good suggestion with the rubber mallet. I dented the shit out of mine with a regular hammer.

Remember to chock your tires, and put the e brake on. Otherwise when you pull the shaft it could roll away.

Good tip. Mines a manual so my parking brake is always on plus my garage floor is flat but it's never a bad idea to chock your tires.

Do you torque the straps to spec or just snug them down?

You should torque them. Now do I always do it? No but I should

In this video? I had falken wildpeak tires and the wheels were jeeps Moab rims that came on the rubicons

I think it was something I had picked up on a video in the past. Just to make sure to put it back in exactly how it came out.

2 things that I do, doesn't make it right. Mark the driveshaft so when you are reinstalling it, it's in the same orientation. Something you can get vibrations if you put it in upside down. I believe the straps are one use only, so replace the straps that tie the rear of the driveshaft to the yoke.

I did mark the driveshaft but I'd never heard the straps being one use before. I'll have to look that up. Thanks

@@WheelinWithWally I was skipping around in the video, I may have missed you marking it. I've reused straps plenty of times, so I'm sure it's fine.
